Complimentary overseas travel insurance

If you have a Bankwest Platinum or World Mastercard ® , you may get some complimentary benefits – like overseas travel insurance. See what's covered, where to make a claim and how to upgrade.

Are you eligible?

You, your spouse and dependent children may get complimentary cover – as long as you’re travelling overseas together and have an open and activated eligible credit card.

The best bit? There's no minimum spend – the cover applies automatically if you're eligible.

You’ll have the basic benefits, with the option to upgrade for extra protection. There are some limitations and exclusions – like if you’re 80 or over, or have pre-existing medical conditions. For more information, refer to the Credit Card Insurance Product Disclosure Statement (PDF) .

Coronavirus (COVID-19)

COVID-19 cover under the Overseas Emergency Medical and Hospital Expenses benefit is now included for travellers whose journey commenced on or after 24 August 2022. If you have purchased any upgraded cover before 24 August, regardless of the date travel commences, COVID-19 cover is not included under Overseas Emergency Medical and Hospital Expenses benefit. There is no COVID-19 cover for cruise travel or cancellation claims related to COVID-19. Terms and conditions apply.

There is no cover under any other benefit for claims related to COVID-19 for all destinations. For more information please refer to the  Credit Card Insurance PDS (PDF) .

What are you covered for?

Existing medical conditions and age limits.

Some existing medical conditions (like diabetes or asthma) and pregnancies are automatically included in your complimentary insurance - as long as you meet the specified criteria for the conditions. Check the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) to work out if you're covered.

If your condition isn't automatically included, or you don’t meet the criteria for cover, you can complete a health assessment online through Cover-More. If you're approved, you can then purchase additional cover.

If you’re 80 or over

Your complimentary overseas travel insurance doesn't include medical or health-related cover. If you like, you can call Cover-More directly to enquire about other travel insurance options.

Looking for extra protection?

You can buy comprehensive and extended cover options through the Cover-More upgrade portal. Access it through the Bankwest App, otherwise you can call Cover-More on 1300 468 340 .

Comprehensive cover

Buy cover for cancellation (up to $15,000 if it’s just you or up to $20,000 if it’s your family too – this is already included if you have a World Mastercard), rearrangement and a range of other extras - like rental vehicle insurance excess cover and travel delay expenses. Limits apply.

Extended cover

If you have a Gold or Platinum Mastercard, you can extend your cover by up to two months. If you have a World Mastercard, you can extend it by up to six months.

Before you upgrade, make sure you check our Financial Services Guide (PDF) .

Check your cover

See your complimentary cover and visit Cover-More to make a claim or upgrade – all from the Bankwest App. Go to the ‘ Cards ’ screen from the bottom menu, choose on your eligible credit card then ‘ View insurance details ’.

Frequently asked questions

1. which cards are eligible for overseas travel insurance.

Bankwest Gold, Platinum and World Mastercard credit cards are automatically eligible.

2. Who’s covered under my insurance?

If your spouse and dependent children are travelling overseas with you, they’re protected too.

You no longer need to meet the minimum spend ($500 per person on prepaid travel expenses) in order to make them eligible.

3. Do I need a return ticket booked before I leave Australia?

No, you can book it while you’re overseas. Just keep in mind that the insurance is for travelling, not living overseas.

If you make a claim that includes a ticket to get you home, and you didn’t book one before you left, the cost of the fare will be deducted from the claim.

4. Where can I find my policy number?

You can find your complimentary policy number, upgraded policy numbers and claim info by calling or emailing Cover-More. Otherwise, you can do it from the Cover-More self-service portal through the Bankwest App.

5. Are my children eligible for overseas travel insurance?

Eligible dependent children are only covered if they travel with you for the entire trip.

Here’s Cover-More’s definition of an eligible dependent child:

  • All unmarried children, up to and including 18 years of age, who the cardholder has sole custody of and who live with the cardholder
  • All unmarried children, up to and including 18 years of age, of whom the cardholder has shared custody
  • All unmarried children, from 19 years of age up to and including 21 years of age, who are full-time students attending an accredited institution of higher learning in Australia and who the cardholder has/had sole or shared custody, and who are dependent upon the cardholder for their maintenance and financial support
  • All unmarried persons who are physically or mentally incapable of self-support who the cardholder has custody of and who live with the cardholder.

However, accompanied child/children never means an infant born on the journey.

For more info, call Cover-More on 1300 468 340 .

Hi, I’m trying to find the details on eligible purchases. I want to take my card to California. The 0% foreign transaction fee is a key feature but possibly not worth it if what I in supermarkets, restaurants and fuel etc is not considered eligible. Can you direct me please? Thank you

Eligible purchases are all purchases made on the card except for the following: – Cash advances – Balance Transfers – Interest charges – Credit fees and charges – Bank fees and charges – Transactions Bankwest decide are disputed due to being fraudulent or which involve an abuse of your card – Foreign exchange purchases – Travellers cheques – All purchases for gaming or gambling transactions including gambling chip purchases and online gambling purchases – BPAY payments ie. bill payments and other payments made through the BPAY Electronic Payments Scheme – Government charges (other than GST payable in connection with the purchase of goods and services on which you earn Qantas Points) – Credit card protection insurance – Business Related Expenses – Any other transactions the bank “reasonably determine from time to time should be excluded”

This list comes from the terms and conditions PDF for the credit card which you can find here .

Hope this helps,

is the annual fee including the annual qantas rewards program fee?

Hi Angela, This card doesn’t have an annual Qantas Rewards Program Fee. So the annual fee listed is what you’d pay for the account each year. I hope this helps.

Hi How is the maximum credit limit determined? and what is the maximum credit limit if there is one? thanks Irene

Hi Irene, The credit limit is determined based on details provided when you apply for a credit card, including your income, expenses and credit report/score. All lenders in Australia have to assess the applicant’s ability to repay the total credit limit, with interest, over a 3-year period as part of Australia’s responsible lending requirements. Bankwest doesn’t list a specific maximum limit available for this card but Finder does have a guide about how to estimate or calculate a credit limit that may be suitable for you. I hope this helps.

Thank you for getting in touch with Finder.

You may earn QFF points on paying utilities with your Bankwest Qantas Platinum Mastercard so long that you’re not processing the payment via BPay. BPAY payments like bill payments and other payments made through the BPAY are exmpeted to earn Qantas Frequent Flyer points.

I hope this helps.

Thank you and have a wonderful day!

Thanks for your message.

Since the minimum cost is under the terms and conditions of Bankwest Qantas Platinum card, the cost cannot be shared by a non-Bankwest card.

Hope this helps!

Creditcard.com.au review

Editor review, the bankwest qantas platinum credit card.

Allowing cardholders to earn rewards on the Qantas Frequent Flyer program, the Bankwest Qantas Platinum Credit Card offers an earn rate of 0.6 Qantas Points per $1 on the first $2500 spent per month, and 0.3 points thereafter. Platinum perks on offer include complimentary Qantas Frequent Flyer membership, travel and retail insurance cover, and no foreign transaction fee.

What we love...

With Bankwest Qantas Platinum Credit Card, you can get up to 50,000 Bonus Qantas Points with a minimum spend requirement of $3,000 on eligible purchases in the first 90 days and keeping your card open for over 15 months.

You can earn 0.6 Qantas Points per $1 on the first $2500 spent per month, and 0.3 points thereafter.

Another point of difference on the Bankwest Qantas Platinum Credit Card is its range of platinum perks. With no foreign transaction fees, cardholders could save on purchases made overseas, either made in person while travelling, or while shopping online at international retailers. Considering some cards charge 4% on these transactions, this card could offer big savings indeed.

In addition, the Bankwest Qantas Platinum Credit Card offers included insurances covering travel and retail purchases. These include overseas travel insurance, interstate flight inconvenience insurance and transit accident insurance, as well as price guarantee, extended warranty and purchase security insurance.

What’s not so great...

While many providers have wound back their offerings on rewards cards and frequent flyer cards, cardholders may still expect a higher earn rate on a platinum Qantas credit card than this card offers. To work out whether it offers value to you, look at your annual spend to calculate how many points you’ll earn, then consider the value of those points compared to the annual fee.

Why should you choose this card?

If you want a Qantas credit card with a few nice platinum extras on the side, the Bankwest Qantas Platinum Credit Card could be the card for you. With its range of travel insurance and absence of foreign transaction fees, it could also work well for keen travellers, or anyone who enjoys shopping online at overseas merchants.

For its annual fee, you can enjoy the platinum perks mentioned above, plus a complimentary Qantas Frequent Flyer membership, saving you $99.50. Other features on offer include free worldwide emergency card replacement, up to 44 days interest-free on purchases, and 2.99% p.a. on balance transfers for nine months.

Overall Rating

A worthy option for cardholders who want platinum perks and everyday points earning on the Qantas Frequent Flyer program, the Bankwest Qantas Platinum Credit Card provides a selection of excellent extras, including no foreign transaction fees and included insurances.

Has anyone had to make a claim using Bankwest's "free" travel insurance that comes with their Platinum Zero Mastercard.

I have read through the PDS and to be honest it seems pretty comparable to many other travel insurance companies (with similar inclusions/limits etc), however I am kind of wondering what the "catch" is.

My partner and I are looking at a 6 month trip to US and South America, so insurance would be around $1200. This is a big amount that we can potentially save, however I don't want to be caught short with a shoddy/difficult insurance company, if something were to go wrong.

If anyone has actually had to make a claim through Bankwest (Zurich) via this policy I would love to know what your experience was. Thank you in advance!

I think this card is fairly new, so you may not get any first-hand experience.

For what it is worth, in 2008 I had to spend 2 days in intensive car in a French hospital. The insurance company providing the cover with my ANZ Platinum Visa paid up promptly and without quibble.

bankwest travel insurance platinum card

you will probably find that the terms and conditions of the Insurance cover being provided will require part of the trip to be paid for on the card. The amount varies from card to card.

I have had claims on my AMEX Platinum Card Insurance without any difficulty.

I was more just curious if anyone had any experience when in comes to actually making a claim. like any insurance, the cover is only good if the claims process is quick and easy, and i know from research online that some companies are far better for the claims process than others.

if anyone has had to claim via Zurich insurance and has had good/bad experience please let me know! thanks!

bankwest travel insurance platinum card

I have similar insurance through my ANZ platinum visa. The banks change their contracts with the insurers from time to time. Mine was originally with GRE but is now with QBE. I have made several small claims all with no problems. Just be sure to check that it does cover you for the number of days you are going to be away though. As they do usually have a limit of between 60 and 90 days.

Why the Amex Platinum Is the Only Card I’ll Use To Book Flights

The Amex Platinum Card Earns Me the Most Points

Although I’m not technically a digital nomad, I fly enough to qualify as one.

With trips taking me on roughly 100 flights per year, I’ve done a lot of research when it comes to booking airfare.

Though I have plenty of credit cards to spare, The Platinum Card ® from American Express always finds its way to the front when it comes time to pay — here’s why.

There are plenty of credit cards that earn bonus points on travel , and especially airfare. However, the Amex Platinum card personally beats out others, despite its $695 annual fee ( rates & fees ).

This is because it earns 5x American Express Membership Rewards points per $1 spent (up to $500,000 per year) on flights booked directly with the airline or via AmexTravel.com .

The Platinum Card® from American Express

The Amex Platinum reigns supreme for luxury travel, offering the best airport lounge access plus generous statement credits, and complimentary elite status.

Make no mistake — the Amex Platinum card  is a premium card with a premium price tag. With amazing benefits like best-in-class airport lounge access , hotel elite status, and tremendous value in annual statement credits, it can easily prove to be one of the most lucrative cards in your wallet year after year.

If you travel often, you know that booking with a third party , such as Expedia, Priceline, Orbitz, or even an issuer’s travel portal, can save you some money. But it can also lead to huge amounts of headache s if your flight needs to be changed or canceled or if there are crazy delays and you need to be rerouted.

This is because booking through a third-party agency makes them responsible for your ticket rather than the airline, so they need to be the middleman.

American Airlines Boeing 787 Premium Economy 9a and 9c

Compare the Amex Platinum card’s earning rates to other premium travel rewards cards :

  • Chase Sapphire Reserve ® : 5x points per $1 spent on Chase Travel; 3x points on all other travel purchases
  • Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card : 5x miles per $1 spent on airfare booked with Capital One Travel,

In order to earn these elevated rewards, you’ll need to book your flights with either issuer’s travel portal, which means you’ll be using a third party. That opens you up to issues in the event your travel plans change, which mine often do.

While the Amex Platinum card does have a limit on your 5x earnings up to $500,000 annually, I’ve never even come close to hitting the cap. This means that I’m always able to book directly with the airline while still earning the most rewards.

I’ll admit that I’m not the biggest proponent of travel insurance . I know that it’ll protect you if you get injured, lose your bags, or have travel delays, but purchasing a policy goes against my “spend as little as possible” ethos when it comes to travel.

That’s another reason why I love the Amex Platinum card and use it for my flights. As a premium travel card, it offers complimentary travel insurance . For it to kick in, I need to pay for my travel with my card and it will apply in eligible scenarios.

What kind of travel insurance is offered? A lot:

  • Rental car insurance (secondary)
  • Trip cancellation and interruption insurance
  • Trip delay insurance
  • Baggage insurance plan
  • Premium Global Assist Hotline (emergency medical evacuation and emergency medical transport)

There are two things that really stand out when it comes to the Amex Platinum card’s travel insurance: emergency medical evacuation and emergency medical transport as part of the Premium Global Assist Hotline. Neither of these has a cap, which isn’t something you’ll find often, even when purchasing a policy.

There is only one exception where I’ll use a card other than the Amex Platinum card to pay for my flights, and that’s when I’ve booked an award flight.

This is because Amex has limitations on its baggage insurance plan for award flights, whereas competitors, such as the travel insurance on the Chase Sapphire Reserve card , do not. In this case, the Amex Platinum card won’t cover lost luggage unless you’ve paid the ticket in cash or you’ve used Amex Membership points for your flight. Other award flights outside of this don’t count :

“Other loyalty programs (i.e. non-American Express) do not qualify on purchases redeemed in part or full or pre-arranged travel cost,” according to the terms of baggage insurance plan on the Amex Platinum card. “An example would be common carrier frequent flyer miles point redemption.”

I’m not a snob about a lot of things, but airport lounge access is certainly one of them. I know that as more credit cards offer lounge access, they can be crowded.

That’s one reason I value the Global Lounge Collection offered by Amex’s high-end cards.

Amex Centurion ATL Dining Space

This collection includes a Priority Pass Select membership (upon enrollment), Centurion Lounges, Escape — The Centurion Studio lounges, Plaza Premium lounges, Lufthansa lounges (when flying Lufthansa), Delta SkyClubs (when flying Delta), and more.

That’s far more than you’ll get with other credit cards and lessens the chance that you’ll find yourself in a standing-room-only situation.

This is probably not the most popular opinion, but I think Amex Membership Rewards beat out Chase Ultimate Rewards , Capital One Miles , Citi ThankYou points , and Bilt Rewards .

While each currency has their own strengths and weaknesses, Amex points fit my travel style better than the others. Sure, I love that Chase has World of Hyatt (and it’s where I use my points most often) and that Citi transfer to Choice at double Amex’s rate, but Amex has more usable transfer partners .

I’ll be even more unpopular and say that I’ll often transfer Amex points over to Hilton Honors at a 1:2 ratio, especially when they’re offering a transfer bonus . This isn’t usually a good idea, but I spend my Hilton points at high-end resorts such as the Conrad Maldives and the Conrad Bora Bora , where I can easily net 5-10 cents in value per point. That makes it worth it for me.

Hilton Amex transfer

Other transfer partners that I frequently use include:

  • ANA MileageClub : For low-cost business class flights to Europe
  • Avianca LifeMiles : For Lufthansa first class
  • Virgin Atlantic Flying Club : For first and business class redemptions on ANA
  • Qantas Frequent Flyer : For cheap Air Tahiti Nui flights to French Polynesia

Beyond transfer partners and the Amex Platinum card, I also find Amex points easier to earn . This is due to a variety of reasons, including their robust lineup of Amex point-earning cards , Amex Offers (upon enrollment), and their Rakuten partnership.

I’m not going to throw out all my other credit cards in favor of the Amex Platinum card — I love points and miles too much ever to let that happen. But there’s certainly a strong case for it sticking around in my wallet.

Sure, it offers lots of statement credits (enrollment required for some benefits) and other perks. But I’ll keep the Amex Platinum card to book my airfare. And it’ll stay that way until someone else can match the high earnings and travel insurance offerings, which I don’t anticipate happening anytime soon.
