The History of Moscow City - Russia
Moscow is said to date back eight-and-a half-centuries, with the first references to it in chronicles from 1147. It was built by the Prince of Suzdal- Yuri Dolgoruky on the high Borovitsky Hill where the Neglinnaya River flows into the Moskva River. Later in 1367 Dmitry Donskoy erected great Kremlin ramparts of white stone, henceforward Moscow became known as Belokamennaya (White Stone City)
From its beginnings as a hunting village, it grew steadily into a fortress city, to become later the central point of the whole Russian state.
For centuries Moscow has been a treasure house of carefully preserved national tradition. All the Russian Tsars and Emperors were crowned here in Russia’s main cathedral, the ancient Cathedral of the Dormition. Our prominent rulers of the Russian Empire: Peter the Great and Catherina the Great came to Moscow to celebrate Russian military victories.
Russia’s most intense human aspirations, be they artistic, religious or political, have found their most passionate expression in Moscow. The reflection of these aspirations can be seen in the beautiful architecture created over several centuries, particularly in Moscow’s symbols — the Kremlin, Red Square and St Basil’s Cathedral.

Vodka Museum Tour with transport (excursion only)
Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.
Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

Moscow, a City Like No Other
Moscow is Russia’s largest city with a population of between 12 and 13 million. It is also Europe’s largest city and when you visit Moscow, you can feel it. The layout and architecture of the city is eclectic, ranging from crooked, ancient streets and alleyways to wide, bustling boulevards, from medieval churches to Stalin skyscrapers and to modern, glass buildings towering over everything and of course in the center of it all is the Kremlin and the magnificent Red Square. Moscow is also home to a fantastic, efficient and very beautiful metro system – each station having its own special design. In fact, Express to Russia’s Moscow metro tours and excursions are some of our most popular attractions that we offer. On our Moscow tours, you will see this and more.
Moscow Tours centering on Russian History
Moscow has a long and interesting history and has been the capital of Russia in many of its different iterations – capital of the Grand Duchy of Moscow , the Russian Empire and of course the Soviet Union (who could ever forget the Soviet Union?). Moscow, was founded in the 12th century by Prince Yuri Dolgaruki (Yuri of the long arms – he really did have long arms!). From that time on, it was home to the Russian Tsars until Peter the Great moved the capital to St. Petersburg in 1703. The city has survived invasions and sieges from the Mongols, the Tartars, the Poles, Lithuanians and Napoleon but has always persevered. Our Moscow tours will enlighten you on this great history and give you insights into Muscovites and their unique culture. Our Moscow tours show you what the city is like today but also brings to life the past. Moscow never seems to sleep and is bursting with energy. A Moscow tour with Express to Russia is truly the best way of getting to know Russia’s largest and most vibrant city.
Frequently Asked Questions From Our Travelers
What is the best time to visit moscow.
Any time of year is fine depending on what you plan to do. Summertime is pleasantly warm, ideal for exploring the city and its vibrant atmosphere, but Moscow will be much busier and accommodation is more expensive. Winter can be quite cold but beautiful nonetheless, and this is unproblematic if you intend to spend most of your trip in museums and galleries. There are also various festivals and events organised throughout the year. For more information about the best time to visit, read our guide
How many days are enough in Moscow?
If you plan your itinerary strategically and aren’t averse to a packed schedule, you can cover Moscow’s main sights over a long weekend. Most popular attractions are in the city centre, and the Moscow Metro allows you to cover much ground in a small amount of time. Ensure that your accommodation is fairly central and book tickets in advance, so that you can make the most of your days. For an informative and well-organised day out, check out our Moscow day tours with options to suit all interests.
Do they speak English in Moscow?
As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.
Is it safe to travel to Moscow?
It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you. With its 20 towers and high walls, the Kremlin rises imposingly over Red Square. This world-famous fortress with its area of 28 hectares is home to over 800 years of Russian history. Amy Roloff and Husband Chris Marek Tour 10,000-Square-Foot ‘Dream’ Retirement House with 6-Car Garage
The TLC stars weigh the pros and cons of the sprawling abode on Tuesday’s new episode of ‘Little People, Big World’

- Amy Roloff and her husband Chris Marek tour a potential dream retirement house on Tuesday’s episode of Little People, Big World
- Chris also sees the massive abode as a business opportunity to host events, while Amy admits that the property is outside of their budget
- The pair are blown away by the space but agree that it would require a lot of maintenance
Amy Roloff and her husband Chris Marek are thinking big when it comes to their retirement!
On Tuesday’s new episode of Little People, Big World , the TLC stars brought viewers along with them as they tour a massive 10,000 sq. ft. house in Oregon. The scene begins with Roloff and Marek discussing the pros and cons of the property as they drive over.
“I’m worried that this house is a little outside our budget, but it’s good to look at and see,” Roloff says.
“I think the first step is to see if we like it and if we do, work out how we pay for it,“ Marek counters, adding that seeing Amy's ex Matt Roloff ."get so far along on his dream house reminds us that we’re not in our dream house yet. So we’re actively watching and it would be nice to find that home before we retire.”
Amy then admits that the home they’re about to look at, which boasts a six-car garage, is bigger than they need but it’s more up their alley.
“We’re used to having a little more space,” she says. “An acre would be nice. I would eventually like a home with a master on the main. We’d love a three-car garage.”
Upon entering the six-acre property, Amy immediately notes the long, beautifully landscaped driveway, but worries about the maintenance it may require.
As they pull up to the home, they are both blown away by the spacious entryway and stunning rural view from the back windows.
“I think it looks better than the pictures,” Marek says.
While Amy is looking for a permanent home to retire in, her husband sees the sprawling abode as a business opportunity.
“It seems like this would be a good venue for weddings,” he says. “Not a lot of people around, you know, beautiful farmland.”
Amy understands where her husband is coming from but admits that she doesn’t want to be working “until I’m 85” just to afford it.
In a confessional-style clip, Amy reveals her excitement about sharing this new experience with her husband.
“I think Chris and I, we’re still learning about each other,” she explains. “This will be the first time that we’re making some really major decisions together. I think this is kind of fun and exciting to see how we work together.”
After the pair tour the kitchen, bathroom, primary bedroom and movie room, she sighs and says: “This is high maintenance, man.”
Also during the scene, she compares the home to her ex-husband Matt's property, Roloff Farms , where she and Marek tied the knot in 2021.
“10,000 square feet is big. I think the ‘Big House’ at the farm is a little over 5,000 square feet. And I thought the farmhouse was plenty of space as well,” she says.

Amy previously owned a portion of the farm and lived there until she and Matt divorced in 2016 . The exes share four children together — twins Zach and Jeremy , 33, a daughter named Molly, 30, and another son named Jacob , 27.
While both have moved on with new partners , Matt revealed that he was planning to leave the farm to his ex-wife during the season 16 premiere of Little People, Big World after he had a falling out with son Zach.
Little People, Big World airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m. ET on TLC.

'rhop' star karen huger involved in car crash, cited by cops, 'rhop' star karen huger involved in car crash ... cited by police, exclusive 208 3/20/2024 10:52 am pt.
Karen Huger was involved in a scary crash this week ... with officers telling us she wrecked her car so badly, it was no longer operable.
A representative for Montgomery County Police tells TMZ ... the 'Real Housewives of Potomac' star was driving a 2017 Maserati late Tuesday night in Potomac, Maryland in what they describe as an aggressive manner -- too fast for the conditions, they say.
Police say Huger struck a median and crosswalk sign at an intersection before continuing on and colliding with a parking sign off the roadway where the car came to a rest.
We're told the airbag deployed in the car but no other passengers were in her vehicle. No word on whether she or anyone else was injured.
The car itself was allegedly damaged so badly it couldn't be driven and a tow truck was called to retrieve it ... the extent of the damage is not yet known.
Cops say KH received multiple citations -- unclear exactly what they were for at this time -- but, we're told she was not arrested.
We've reached out to Huger -- a main cast member on all eight seasons of 'RHOP' -- about the accident ... so far no word back.

Burnt-out car found in investigation into around 50 dead animals dumped outside Hampshire shop
The bodies of around 50 dead hares as well as a barn owl and a kestrel, were discovered outside a shop in Broughton, Hampshire on Friday.
News reporter @niamhielynch
Sunday 17 March 2024 12:29, UK
Police investigating an incident in which dozens of dead animals were dumped outside a Hampshire shop have found a burnt-out Suzuki Grand Vitara believed to be linked to the case.
Warning: This story contains images and descriptions readers may find distressing
Hampshire Police has urged the public to send any CCTV or dash cam images of cars matching this description in the Test Valley area at the time of the incident.
"Officers are following all possible lines of enquiry and will be in the area today to provide reassurance to local residents," the force said in a statement.
The bodies of around 50 dead hares as well as a barn owl and a kestrel, were discovered by a member of staff who had gone to open up Broughton Community Shop on Friday.
The barn owl and kestrel were "stuffed" on the door handles and blood was smeared on the windows, the shop's treasurer said.
On the shop's Facebook page, a post said: "Thank you all for popping in, messaging and phoning to make sure we are okay. We are okay, shocked but okay."

Police had previously appealed for information about a silver Suzuki car that may have been in the area between Thursday night and Friday morning.
"It was bedlam, it was just covered in dead hares, all the way across this paving here, horrifying," the shop's treasurer Mike Hensman told Sky News.
"And on the door there was a dead raptor, bird of prey, and an owl impaled on the door handles. And there was blood everywhere."
He described how shocked staff and villagers had to remove the remains.
"We cleared it all up, got the police in, had to wash all the windows down and get rid of everything.
"We got a local farmer here to get rid of all the dead hares and we just got on with business because that's what you do in a community. We're servicing the community. We just had to keep going."
He believes the shop was targeted because the entrance is "tucked away".

"A shop on the high street you wouldn't have been able to do it because there would have been cars going by. It's tucked away so someone's able to get a car round here and have a party with some dead hares. It's ridiculous.
"It made entertainment for them and caused a problem for us... it could have been anywhere."
It is the second time in recent weeks that the local area has been targeted.
Carcasses of pheasants, chickens and hares were dumped outside Awbridge Primary School, around six miles from Broughton, last month.
Police say they are keeping an "open mind" about whether the two incidents are linked.
Tony Lowry, a local wildlife and conservation warden, believes rival criminal groups who travel from outside the area are to blame.
He claims it's driven by gambling: "Money, betting between groups, that's basically what it's about... how many animals they're going to kill in one night, how big an animal?
"We've had instances of deers' ears being chopped off to prove they've actually got them, taken them away. We find piles of animals with no ears, we have done in the past. Terrible.

2024 NCAA tournament predictions to win March Madness regions, Final Four
Selection Sunday is officially behind us. We know who is playing who and the path each team would need to take in order to claim the 2024 national title. So, now the question looms "Who will it be?"
Whether you are trying to create that first bracket or just trying to win your office pool, there is plenty of intrigue surrounding who the experts having making Cinderella runs, representing each region in the Final Four, and of course, which team will win it all.
Obviously, trying to predict March Madness is near impossible. It is madness, after all. And there's a reason that nobody has ever been able to correctly predict a full bracket. Still, for those of us less familiar with the 2024 college basketball scene, these predictions could be exactly what we need in order to earn bragging rights for a year.

2024 March Madness Predictions:
East region:.
USA Today : UConn
Paul Myerberg writes, "Anyone other than UConn winning the region and going to the Final Four would be a big surprise. The Huskies are long, deep, explosive, dripping with athleticism and loaded with the sort of confidence you'd expect from the defending champs." Myerberg does like Florida Atlantic as a potential sleeper in this region, but seeing as how FAU would likely face UConn in the Round of 32, clearly he believes that this is UConn's region to lose.
FOX Sports : UConn
FOX Sports' John Fanta also likes UConn to come out of this region. It should be mostly a breeze for the reigning national champs too. That said, fans will be treated to a rematch of last year's national championship game between the Huskies and San Diego State Aztecs in the Sweet 16 if Fanta's predictions come true.
West Region:
USA Today : Arizona
Josh Peter writes, "Sure, the skeptics are howling: But Arizona lost two of its past three games! Including a 78-65 setback against lowly Southern California! Nonetheless, these Wildcats are built for an extended run thanks to a versatile eight-man rotation. Scoring? Got it. Arizona ranks third in scoring offense with 87.7 points per game. Caleb Love, the senior guard, leads the team in scoring at 18.1, and each of the team’s four other starters are averaging 9.8."
FOX Sports : Arizona
No love for the top seed North Carolina it seems. Fanta likes the Wildcats out of the West as well, with a matchup against UNC in the Elite 8.
South Region:
USA Today : Houston
Eddie Timanus writes, "One at least has to consider Kentucky in the No. 3 position. When their many talented scorers get going, the Wildcats are capable of beating anyone. But in the end we can’t go against top-seeded Houston. Despite the Cougars getting outmuscled in the Big 12 finale, they’ve been remarkably consistent all season in the nation’s deepest conference, and their defense-first approach should serve them well in the pressure-packed environment of March Madness."
FOX Sports : Houston
Once again, we see a match. Houston has undoubtedly been one of the most consistent teams in college basketball. It's hard to argue against them. While teams like James Madison and NC State could make a run, they certainly wouldn't be much of a match for a team as talented and proven as Houston.
Midwest Region:
USA Today : Purdue
Steve Berkowitz writes, "Given that the other team in NCAA Tournament history to lose in the first round as a No. 1 seed — Virginia — came back to win the national championship the following year, also as a No. 1 seed, how can you resist this one?"
FOX Sports : Tennessee
Our first mismatch. This is arguably the closest of any of the regions. Creighton has been one of the best teams all year and for them to be listed as a No. 3 seed, seems remarkably disrespectful. Still, FOX Sports likes the Tennessee Volunteers out of this region, defeating the Purdue Boilermakers in the Elite 8.
Final Four :
Paul Myerberg writes, "Anyone other than UConn winning the whole thing might be a big surprise, actually."
And it's hard to argue against him. UConn has been one of the deepest, most explosive, and most athletic teams we've seen in recent memory. Not only do they have the tools to reach the championship and win, but they clearly have the experience and know what it takes to do so.
UConn seems to be the runaway favorite for most experts and it's hard to disagree. UConn has dominated nearly every opponent they've faced, and they've faced several strong opponents.
