    Speed, Distance & Time Calculation

In order to use the above speed, distance & time calculator, or do such math on your own, you will need to know two out of three metrics: speed, distance, time. You will need to convert the metrics to the same time and distance units, e.g. miles, kilometers, meters, yards, feet, and hours, minutes or seconds. For example, if you have speed in mph (miles per hour), time should also be in hours. If you have distance in kilometers, then speed should also be in km/h (kilometers per hour).

The unit of the result will depend on the units you input, but our speed calculator will conveniently display additional units where appropriate.

    Average Speed formula

The formula for average speed, also called average velocity in physics and engineering, is:

where v is the velocity, d is the distance, and t is the time, so you can read it as Speed = Distance / Time . As noted above, make sure you convert the units appropriately first, or use our speed calculator which does that automatically. The resulting unit will depend on the units for both time and distance, so if your input was in miles and hours, the speed will be in mph. If it was in meters and seconds, it will be in m/s (meters per second).

Example: If you took a plane from New York to Los Angeles and the flight was 5 hours of air time, what was the speed of the plane, given that the flight path was 2450 miles? The answer is 2450 / 5 = 490 mph (miles per hour) average speed. If you want the result in km/h, you can convert from miles to km to get 788.58 km/h.

    Distance formula

The formula for distance, if you know time (duration) and the average speed, is:

Example: If a truck travelled at an average speed of 80 km per hour for 4 hours, how many miles did it cover in that time? To find the miles covered, first, calculate 80 * 4 = 320 km, then convert km to miles by dividing by 1.6093 or by using our km to miles converter to get the answer: 198.84 miles.

    Duration (Time) formula

The time, or more precisely, the duration of the trip, can be calculated knowing the distance and the average speed using the formula:

where d is the distance travelled, v is the speed (velocity) and t is the time, so you can read it as Time = Distance / Speed . Make sure you convert the units so both their distance and time components match, or use our trip duration calculator above which will handle conversions automatically. For example, if you have distance in miles and speed in km/h, you will need to convert speed to mph or distance to kilometers. The time unit of the result will match the time unit of the speed measure, so if it is measured in something per hour, the result will be in hours. If it is measured in some unit per second, the result will be in seconds.

Example: If a train can travel 500 miles with an average speed of 50 miles per hour, how long it would take it to complete a 500-mile route? To find the answer, use the formula and substitute the values, resulting in 500 / 50 = 10 hours.

    How to calculate the average speed of a car?

Say you travelled a certain distance with a car or another vehicle and you want to calculate what its average speed was. The easiest way to do that would be by using the calculator above, but if you prefer, you can also do the math yourself. Either way, you need to know the distance to a satisfactory approximation, for which you can use a map (e.g. Google Maps) to measure the distance from point to point. Make sure you measure closely to the path you took, and not via a straight line, unless you travelled by air in which case that would be a good approximation. Of course, having a GPS reading of the distance would be more precise. Then you need to know the travel time. Make sure you subtract any rests or stops you made from the total trip duration.

If the total distance travelled was 500 miles and the time it took you was 5 hours, then your average speed was 500 / 5 = 100 miles per hour (mph). If the distance was 300 kilometers and it took you 5 hours to cover it, your speed was 300 / 5 = 60 km/h (kilometers per hour).

Moscow Bus Network

Moscow's crazy traffic and its excellent metro network mean that the city's buses and trolleybuses aren't the number one option for tourists .

Moscow has hundreds of bus and trolleybus routes , many of which connect the city centre with its otherwise-isolated suburban neighbourhoods. Regular traffic jams mean that the bus network has not always been the most recommendable option , especially as the metro is so efficient. 

Having said that, new bus lanes have opened up recently making it a comfortable alternative for certain routes. The bus can be a good, economical option at night , when 13 routes replace the metro after it shuts down (all starting from Kitay-Gorod metro and taking the main roads out to the edge off the city).

More modern buses have screens indicating the stops along the route, but in older ones you may well struggle knowing where to get off if relying on the Russian-language loudspeaker announcements .

If you do decide to catch the bus, tickets can be purchased from kiosks and metro stops, and the majority of lines operate between 6 am and 1 am.

I tried the new Detroit-DTW bus service. Here’s how it went, what I learned

Testing out the new dax bus.

DETROIT – I spend a lot of time flying in and out of Detroit.

I wouldn’t say it’s particularly difficult to get to and from the airport since I live in Downtown Detroit, but it can get expensive if you have to rely on services like Lyft and Uber.

Since I moved here a few years ago, I have always taken the 261 FAST Bus that goes directly from Downtown to both terminals at DTW. For $2, it’s great if you don’t mind that it takes over an hour each way because of all the stops on the local roads.

There’s also the issue of reliability. The bus schedules are not 100% reliable and I’ve had many occasions where Google Maps will say a bus is delayed but it would actually arrive on time.

Then there’s the luggage. I travel often enough that I generally never need more than a carry-on, but there have been times where I need to bring more that, logistically, is hard to bring on a public bus, especially for an hour-plus-long journey.

I always have to have a backup mode of transportation every time I consider using the bus first. Luckily enough, I was coming back from a trip on DAX’s first day of operation , so I was excited to try out the new service for the first time.

New service launches at DTW

DAX , Detroit Air Xpress, is $6 if you reserve ahead of time and $8 at the door. I landed at about 8 p.m. and saw that there was a bus leaving McNamara terminal at 8:25 p.m. with an estimated arrive in Detroit at 8:55 p.m. I booked my ticket on my phone the moment I had signal with no problems.

This also gave me enough time to get from my gate to the pickup location which happens to be the same as the FAST bus.

The website had clear information about pickup locations at both McNamara and Evans terminal. That same information can also be found in the PDF ticket that is emailed to you.

You can also track the busses on your phone by downloading the Indian Trails Bus Tracker app and entering “DAX” in Client ID.

The bus arrived at McNamara promptly at 8:20 p.m. The bus driver came out and confirmed my name, which he had on a tablet. He took my luggage into the side compartment, and I walked into the spacious charter bus.

There were no reserved seats but there were only a handful of people riding, so I had plenty to choose from.

The driver waited until 8:25 p.m. and left right on time.

The ride was very peaceful, quiet and quick. If you’ve ever been on a charter bus, it’s the same experience.

The chairs are comfortably soft and plush. I found plenty of standard 3-prong charging ports. There are overhead vents that you can close or open to control the air conditioning, as well as a reading light.

According to the DAX website, there’s also a bathroom and wi-fi, but I didn’t need to use either.

Less than 30 quick minutes later, we were already Downtown at the dedicated drop-off location just across the street from The Westin Book Cadillac, just one block over from where my usual FAST bus drop-off is.

With 16 round trip rides from 3:30 a.m. through 11 p.m. each day, it’s a reliable option to get to and from the airport quickly and affordably. It was great not having to hold onto my luggage and it’s much more comfortable than the bus.

I can see myself taking the DAX as long as it is being offered through their pilot program. I am just glad to have multiple options of public transportation to get to and from the airport.

Maryland transportation secretary says contractors were working on bridge at time of collapse

Maryland State Transportation Secretary Paul Wiedefeld told reporters there were workers on the Francis Scott Key Bridge at the time of its collapse.

"We know there were individuals on the bridge at the time of the collapse, working on the bridge, contractors for us," he said at a news conference Tuesday morning.

Wiedefeld said the workers were "basically doing some concrete deck repair," but said they did not know how many vehicles were involved.

He added that the transport authority has set up a facility for family members of those who were believed to be on the bridge at the time of its collapse.

Baltimore fire chief: Sonar has detected the presence of vehicles submerged in the water

Baltimore Fire Chief James Wallace says authorities have detected vehicles submerged in the water.

“Our sonar has detected the presence of vehicles submerged in the water,” said Wallace at a news conference on the collapse of Francis Scott Key Bridge. “I don't have a count of that yet.”

He said emergency services are using sonar, drones and infrared technology as a part of their search for people and vehicles who may have fallen from the Key Bridge into the Patapsco River.

No indication of "terrorism" or intent in Baltimore bridge collapse, police chief says

Baltimore Police said there was no evidence that the ship collision that caused the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge was intentional.

“There is absolutely no indication that there's any terrorism, that this was done on purpose,” Chief Richard Worley said at a news conference.

The FBI  said  that it was joining the investigation into the cause of the collision.

Rescue crews have determined there are vehicles in the Patapsco River following the bridge collapse.

“Our sonar has detected the presence of vehicles submerged in the water,” said Fire Chief James Wallace. “I don't have a count of that yet.”

Wallace said they are waiting to make sure that the ship is secure and stable before investigators board it.

“Never would you think that you would see, physically see, the Key Bridge tumble down like that,” Mayor Brandon M. Scott said.

Cruises, cars and commodities: What to know about the Port of Baltimore

The collapse of the   Francis Scott Key Bridge over the Patapsco River outside the Port of Baltimore threatens to disrupt shipping operations at a major US trade hub for autos, container traffic and commodities. Baltimore also has a cruise terminal.

Closer to the Midwest than any other port on the East Coast, Baltimore ranks first in the United States for autos and light trucks, handling a record 850,000 vehicles last year. It was also the leading port for farming and construction machinery, as well as imported sugar and gypsum. It was second in the country for exporting coal.

Overall, Baltimore ranks as the 9th biggest US port for international cargo, handling a record 52.3 million tons, valued at $80.8 billion in 2023.

“The immediate focus is the rescue operation, but there will clearly be a highly-complex recovery phase and investigation to follow and we don't know what impact this will have on operations at the Port of Baltimore," said Emily Stausbøll, market analyst at Norway-based shipping analytics company Xeneta.

“While Baltimore is not one of the largest US East Coast ports, it still imports and exports more than one million containers each year so there is the potential for this to cause significant disruption to supply chains," she added.

Baltimore's cruise terminal serves ships operated by Royal Caribbean, Carnival and Norwegian. Cruises carrying more than 444,000 passengers departed from the port last year.

According to the Maryland state government, the port supports 15,330 direct jobs and 139,180 jobs in related services.

Rescue crews looking for at least seven people in Baltimore bridge collapse

Rescue operations are underway near the wreckage of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, as crews look for people who fell into the Patapsco River.

“We are still very much in an active search and rescue posture at this point, and we will continue to be for some time,” Wallace added.

Baltimore Fire says two people have been rescued from the river – one who was uninjured, and another in hospitalized “very serious condition.”

“This is an unthinkable tragedy,” Mayor Brandon Scott said. “We have to first and foremost pray for all of those impacted.”

Ship that collided with Baltimore bridge was chartered by Danish shipping company Maersk

The container ship that collided with the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore on Tuesday was chartered by Maersk and carrying their customers' cargo, the Danish shipping company told CNN.

"We are horrified by what has happened in Baltimore, and our thoughts are with all of those affected," The company said in its statement.

The company, which has a full name of A.P. Moller - Maersk, said no company crew and personnel were onboard the vessel. It said the ship, DALI, is operated by charter vessel company Synergy Group. 

"We are closely following the investigations conducted by authorities and Synergy, and we will do our utmost to keep our customers informed," the statement said. 

CNN is attempting to contact the owner and managers of the ship, including Synergy.

FBI Baltimore on the scene at the Key Bridge

FBI Baltimore personnel are on the scene at the Francis Scott Key Bridge, they have said in a post on X.

The agency said it was working "side by side with our local, state and federal partners."

Baltimore fire emergency chief says 2 people saved from water after Key Bridge collapse

The Baltimore Fire Department Chief James Wallace says authorities rescued two people from the water this morning, one without injury and the other who has been transferred to hospital in a serious condition.

Authorities are continuing their search for upwards of seven people, Wallace says. But, he says that number could change as it is a "very large incident." Earlier on Tuesday, an official said as many as 20 people could be in the water.

Wallace added that the crew remains on board the ship, and are communicating with the US Coast Guard. He added that emergency services are looking into reports that there were workers on the bridge at the time of the incident.

Speaking at the press conference, Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott also described the incident as an “unthinkable tragedy,” and offered his prayers for all those affected, as well as his thanks to first responders.

Authorities share updates on Baltimore bridge collapse

Authorities are holding a news conference on the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore after it was struck by a large ship.

Divers and search and rescue teams are searching for people in the Patapsco River after several vehicles are believed to have fallen into the water, including one as large as a tractor-trailer, said Kevin Cartwright, director of communications of the Baltimore City Fire Department.

The teacher had learned a valuable lesson during a previous journey on a Thompson Bus & Freight vehicle in frigid weather.

There likely wouldn’t be any heat.

“I tucked my hands into the sleeves of my winter jacket, and I had liner mitts on, and any time my fingertips came out, they would go numb with cold,” he said after arriving in Winnipeg Saturday morning.

Skeaff, bundled inside his parka, snow pants and blankets — he described it as “winter camping gear” — appeared ready to travel south by dogsled, not motorcoach.

“I tucked my hands into the sleeves of my winter jacket, and I had liner mitts on, and any time my fingertips came out, they would go numb with cold” –Erik Skeaff 

His educated guess was a correct one; it was bitterly cold as the wheels on the bus went round and round on the overnight ride.

Skeaff said he was concerned about far less-prepared travellers, including one nearby he watched shivering all night long.

“At one point, the driver got that young man a blanket, and he just put the blanket on top of him and kind of curled up inside it,” he said. “And then in the morning, when we were taking suitcases off the bus, I saw a woman shivering uncontrollably, her whole body was shaking.”

The weekend’s rolling misery came almost exactly a year after the previous Progressive Conservative government promised to investigate the Thompson-based bus line accused of operating vehicles with a variety of mechanical issues, including broken heaters.

Last March, then-transportation and infrastructure minister Doyle Piwniuk promised the province and Manitoba Public Insurance would investigate the northern Manitoba bus line.

Monday, Progressive Conservative spokesperson Matt Preprost said the situation was under investigation during the period leading up to October’s provincial election, noting the Tories passed legislation last May that would crack down on “chameleon carriers” — transportation companies that change their names to hide poor safety records from passengers.

“The new provincial government has a responsibility to act,” Prepost wrote in an email Monday. “The NDP transportation minister, however, has failed to act and has not proclaimed the (bill) into law.”

Thompson Bus & Freight incorporated in July 2018 before beginning a new company with Nisichawayasihk Cree Nation called NCN Thompson Bus Ltd. in January 2019. According to public carrier data, NCN Thompson Bus Ltd.’s safety certificate expired in 2020; Thompson Bus & Freight’s is active until May.

Manitoba Transport Minister Lisa Naylor said the province is working on the issue.

“As there are multiple jurisdictions with responsibility for the safety of passengers, Manitoba has been working with the federal government to address concerns related to passenger safety on buses travelling, particularly during winter months,” she said in an email Monday.

Skeaff said the bus left Thompson at 10 p.m.; the temperature was -20 with the wind chill. When the estimated 80 passengers aboard got to Winnipeg, it was -19 with the wind chill.

He said many people in Thompson and other northern communities have no choice but to keep using Thompson Bus to get to Winnipeg. A one-way ticket cost $80.

He said he’ll have a winter sleeping bag with him the next time he has to make the trip in winter weather.

”I think people should be able to take a bus without having to ride in sub-zero temperatures and get off shivering, freezing cold,” he said. “What I’d like to know is, can the heat be fixed on the bus, and if it’s not being fixed, is somebody just making money from freezing-cold passengers?”

In 2019, Thompson Bus asked the RCMP to find one of its buses and help passengers in -40 C weather travelling with little heat.

Siddarth Varma, part-owner of both Thompson Bus & Freight Ltd. and connected bus agency NCN Thompson Bus Ltd., declined to comment Monday.

Nisichawayasihk Cree Nation deputy chief Marcel Moody said the intention is to purchase newer vehicles with working heat. Two new buses were purchased last fall.

“We’re trying our best to make sure our buses are safe… inevitably, there are mechanical issues sometimes,” he said. “We have the same concerns, and we’re trying our best, that’s all I can say for now.”

Thompson Mayor Colleen Smook said neither the former nor current provincial government has ever connected with her office regarding issues with bus lines in the northern city, but called it a persistent issue that impacts her constituents and people farther north who rely on the buses to get medical care.

“A lot of people have no choice but to take that bus back and forth,” she said. “It’s not as if it’s just something that you could do (if) you want to or not, it’s definitely a service that is very important to us.”

Earlier this month, the owner of Maple Bus Lines — the only other Thompson-to-Winnipeg option — was sentenced to 14 months house arrest after admitting to falsifying invoices at a previous job with Manitoba Liquor and Lotteries.

Lori Mann pleaded guilty to one count of fraud over $5,000.

Three lawsuits were filed against Maple Bus Lines in December seeking $400,000 for loans and unpaid accounting services. Mann did not respond to requests for comment Monday.

Concrete truck veers into Hays CISD school bus on field trip, killing child and adult

3/23 UPDATE: A statement by Hays CISD stated that the bus involved in the crash was not equipped with seatbelts, classes and the board meeting originally scheduled for Monday have been cancelled. 

A Hays CISD school bus carrying 44 children and 11 adults was struck head-on by a concrete truck on State Highway 21 near Caldwell Road in Bastrop County on Friday afternoon, killing one child on the bus and an adult male in a vehicle following the bus. 

The crash occurred around 1:59 p.m. as the bus was traveling west on the highway with students from Tom Green Elementary who were returning from a field trip to the Bastrop Zoo.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the concrete truck veered into the westbound lane and struck the front of the school bus. As a result of the initial crash, a Black Charger collided with the back of the bus. That driver died in the crash as well as a young boy who was a Pre-K student at Tome Green Elementary.

It remains unclear if the truck driver will face charges at this time.

“It’s difficult,” Sergeant Deon Cockrell with the Texas Department of Public Safety said. “It’s something we actually do for a living, but it’s difficult when you find children this young that are involved in a crash.”

51 others were injured at the scene with four of those transported by helicopter in critical condition, six transported by ground with potentially serious injuries, and 10 were taken to a children's hospital by ambulance bus. Some who suffered minor injuries did not require transport and were moved to a reunification center established by the school district.

“It’s a lot of coordination, it involved approximately nine EMS agencies,” Kevin Parker, Division Chief with ATCEMS, said. “We are very near the county line.”

Hays CISD Superintendent Eric Wright sent a letter to families saying he's heartbroken, saying in part, “There are grieving families tonight who will never know life again as it was before.”

He thanked first responders and everyone who has reached out to offer support from other school districts to Governor Greg Abbott. He also thanked the bus driver, who he says despite being injured, insisted on all the children receiving treatment first.

Parents were reunited with students at the school in Buda, a process that ended at 6:45 p.m. Friday.

I can report to you this evening that our reunification process was completed at 6:45 p.m. Our teachers and school staff have all been commendable and professional in their efforts to help everyone affected by today’s unspeakable event. Allow me to specifically thank the driver of the bus. Though injured, she insisted that medical personnel tend to the children first. Additionally, the other adults on the bus also focused their attention on the children first, despite their own injuries.

The crash involved coordination from approximately nine EMS agencies, with Austin-Travis County EMS sending five ambulances, two commanders, and two chiefs to the scene. The Capital Area Trauma Regional Advisory Council assisted in distributing patients to area hospitals to avoid overloading the closest facilities.

The school bus overturned on its side during the crash, but it is unclear at this time whether the bus was equipped with seat belts.

Cleanup on SH-21 took until after 9 p.m.

“It’s a busy road and we have a large number of people that were involved in the crash,” Cockrell said. “So we had to go through and identify each of the children, notify the parents, the school had to be identified, so shutting down the road was an absolute necessity.” 

The Texas Department of Public Safety's state crash team is currently investigating the incident and says at this time, there’s no word on what may have caused the concrete truck to veer into the bus. It may take several weeks before investigators finish the crash reconstruction.
