‘One for the good guys’: Shane Lowry wins the BMW PGA to cap a wild week at Wentworth

On the strength of a Sunday 65, Shane Lowry won the DP World Tour's flagship event — his first victory since the 2019 Open Championship.

Things were anything but ordinary this week at the BMW PGA Championship.

Lawsuits, barbs in the press, and geopolitics all had moments of topicality throughout the week at Wentworth, but on Sunday, the golf finally took center stage. And when the dust settled, Shane Lowry stood as the lone man atop the leaderboard.

“I’m so happy,” Lowry said. “I’m the happiest man in the world right now.”

Lowry’s sentiments were earnest and simple. It had been over three years since the Irishman had laid his hands on a trophy, and the drought was wearing on his psyche. But in a superb Sunday 65, Lowry quelled the negativity that crept into his head and bested a field of top players for a one-stroke victory.

Lee Westwood

Lee Westwood talks fan reception, LIV player court case — and ‘fantasy world’

Getting to Lowry’s moment of jubilation wasn’t quite so simple, though.

The inclusion of LIV golfers in the field started the week on a tense note. Before a shot was even struck at Wentworth, the storylines were spicy. A lawsuit in the UK allowed for LIV golfers to gain entry into the field, and those who’ve remained loyal to the DP World Tour were not so happy to see their old pals — Lowry included.

“There are certain guys that I just can’t stand being here, if I’m being honest,” Lowry said. “I don’t like it that they’re here. To be honest, the one thing that has really annoyed me over the last few months is how disruptive they’re all trying to be. I get that they’re here to get world ranking points and do that, but in a way I think they’re here for that and to be disruptive.”

This is as passionate and erudite as I’ve ever heard Shane be on golf’s ongoing soap opera. pic.twitter.com/9skSmXYNi4 — Jamie Weir (@jamiecweir) September 7, 2022

Lowry was hardly the only loyalist to express his annoyance with the LIV golfers playing the BMW. Billy Horschel delivered an impassioned monologue calling the defectors “hypocrites” for showing up at Wentworth, while Jon Rahm called out LIV golfers for exploiting the DP World Tour for world ranking points. Rory McIlroy used his time with the press to poke fun at the LIV golfers in the field.

“I’ll be trying to win a golf tournament regardless,” he said. “They are going to be pretty tired on Sunday; it will be the fourth day.”

On Thursday, play finally commenced — and things only got more strange.

As play neared completion during the opening round, tragedy struck the UK when it was announced that Queen Elizabeth II had died at the age of 96. The loss of the monarch reverberated throughout the country, and golf quickly became an afterthought.

Out of respect for the fallen leader, officials elected to suspend play at Wentworth. The stoppage lasted through Friday as flags were lowered to half-mast and the country mourned the death of the Queen.

“She truly was an inspiration to people the world over,” the DP World Tour said in a statement. “Our deepest sympathies and condolences are with the Royal Family at this time.”

Although the shock of the Queen’s passing was still fresh in the minds of many associated with the tournament, officials decided to press on with their flagship event, albeit with a truncated, 54-hole format. Players returned to Wentworth Saturday morning.

Round 2 was dominated by Scandinavians as Søren Kjeldsen and Viktor Hovland rocketed to the top of the leaderboard. But it would be another crop of European stars that became the storyline on Sunday.

Lowry and McIlroy began the day within striking distance of the lead, but Rahm inserted himself into the conversation with a spirited back-nine charge. Thanks to five birdies and two eagles over his final nine holes, Rahm posted at 16-under to claim the clubhouse lead.

“I remember Alex Noren did it to me one year — the year he won, he went out early and shot 62,” Lowry said. “That came into my head … I just tried my best.”

On this day, Lowry’s best was just good enough. With an eagle and five birdies — including at the par-5 18th hole — the Irishman posted at 17-under. And when McIlroy’s final eagle putt slid past the hole on the 18th green some 15 minutes later, Lowry finally claimed the crown.

The circumstances surrounding the tournament made it all the more sweet.

“I made no secrets how I felt about this whole thing at the start of the week,” Lowry said. “I wanted to go out and win this tournament for myself first and foremost. But also for this tour and everyone who’s stayed loyal to this tour. I really feel like this is one for the good guys.”

Shane Lowry surges on Sunday to win BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth

Shane Lowry earned his first win since The Open Championship in 2019 on the West Course at Wentworth, carding a 65 to finish one shot ahead of Jon Rahm and Rory McIlroy.

pga tour leaderboard wentworth

Shane Lowry sensationally won the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth by one shot from Jon Rahm and Rory McIlroy, without making a bogey all week.

Lowry's win is his sixth on the DP World Tour and he becomes the first player from the Republic of Ireland to win the flagship event since Harry Bradshaw in 1958.

Having made four top-10s at the event in 13 appearances, the 35-year-old has earned his first victory since winning his maiden major title at The Open Championship in 2019.

He becomes the first bogey-free winner on the DP World Tour in a shortened event since Alexander Levy won the Portugal Masters over 36 holes in 2014.

"I'm so happy. I can't put it into words how happy I am and how much this win means to me." @ShaneLowryGolf #BMWPGA | #RolexSeries pic.twitter.com/VLpXjbIzco — DP World Tour (@DPWorldTour) September 11, 2022

"It's been a good year - I felt like I've been close a few times and felt like I've only got a few tournaments left this season and wanted to try and win one, and obviously this one is right up at the top of the list," Lowry said.

"I love it here and I've contended in the past, and even going down the back nine today, I was like, the bad shots that I've hit over the years in contention actually started to creep into my head and it's amazing what this game does.

"I'm so happy. Honestly, words can't (describe) how happy I am, how much this means to me and how much I love this Tour and how much I love this tournament. I'm the happiest man in the world right now."

Patrick Reed set the early clubhouse target. Teeing off over four hours before the leaders, the American made nine birdies, six of them on the back nine, to reach 14-under-par.

However, Reed was overtaken by the magnificent Rahm who equalled the score shot by Min Woo Lee on Saturday. The Spaniard began the third and final round six shots behind Viktor Hovland and Soren Kjeldsen.

Having made just two birdies in the first nine holes, Rahm came alive at the start of the back nine. He played holes 10 to 13 in 5-under and he reached 13-under-par for the week.

Despite making his first bogey of the week on the 15th hole, he made birdie on the next two and emphatically celebrated a clutch eagle putt on his 54th hole to card a 62.

Rahm now held the lead, but he was shortly joined by Lowry. The Irishman, who came second at Wentworth in 2014, eagled the par-5 4th hole and added two more birdies on his front nine.

He tapped in for birdie on the par-5 12th hole to equal his 2021 Ryder Cup teammate on 16-under-par. Meanwhile, FedEx Cup champion Rory and Fabrizio Zanotti were two shots behind on 14-under.

McIlroy almost raised the roof at Virginia Water when his chip lipped out on the 13th hole to reach one shot of the lead. At this stage, Matthieu Pavon and Billy Horschel were in the clubhouse on 13-under, while Hovland, Talor Gooch and Thomas Detry were still on the course on the same score.

The Northern Irishman did cause some cheer on the 15th hole when he nailed a curling right-to-left birdie putt to reach 15-under-par. Meanwhile, Gooch eagled the 18th hole to card a 67, finishing on 15-under-par.

Lowry found the fairway on the 18th and made a solid birdie to move one shot ahead of Rahm. McIlroy now needed an eagle to force a playoff.

The four-time major champion's effort trickled down the slope and somehow avoided the cup. He signed for a 67 to finish in tied second with Rahm.

Final leaderboard:

-17 S Lowry

-16 R McIlroy, J Rahm

-15 T Gooch

-14 P Reed, T Detry, V Hovland, S Kjeldsen

-13 M Pavon, B Horschel, F Molinari, R Cabrera Bello

2023 BMW PGA Championship: Ludvig Aberg seizes co-lead after Round 2 as sensational run continues

The rookie ryder cup selection surged to the top of the leaderboard at wentworth on friday.

BMW PGA Championship - Day Two

Ludvig Aberg is coming. That much has been made clear. Following his win at the European Masters a few weeks ago and his selection as a captain's pick on the European Ryder Cup team by Luke Donald, hopes were high for his BMW PGA Championship showing at Wentworth Club this week.

Thus far, he has exceeded them.

Following a 68 on Thursday in Round 1, he shot a 66 in Round 2 (with a double!) to grab a share of the 36-hole lead with fellow Swede, Sebastian Soderberg. And Aberg did it all in front of two playing partners you may have heard of, Rory McIlroy and Viktor Hovland.

The 66 on Friday was a show. Eight birdies, including this hole-out chip on No. 14, helped him put together a 34 on the front and a 32 on the back to get into the lead:

Ludvig Åberg produces yet again...🤯 #BMWPGA | #RolexSeries pic.twitter.com/JIazA0mnJH — DP World Tour (@DPWorldTour) September 15, 2023

"Normally I would have putted it, but I had my pitch mark right in my line so I couldn't putt it," Aberg said of the chip. "So I had to chip it over. It came out a little bit hot ... luckily it went in, and it was quite a cool experience."

There are a few players still out on the course after play was suspended for darkness, but it is unlikely that anyone catches Aberg as the Round 2 co-leader; he will likely begin Round 3 with Soderberg, clear of the rest of the field.

Almost slam dunks it! 🏀 Ludvig Åberg co-leads the @BMWPGA . #BMWPGA | #RolexSeries pic.twitter.com/4EVbD6JlBE — DP World Tour (@DPWorldTour) September 15, 2023

"I thought it was great," Aberg said of his performance on Friday. "It showed that even though I wasn't as sharp off the tee as I would want, I still was able to find a good score. Really pleased with the way I hit my irons and my wedges. Gave myself a lot of chances. Pin high a lot today, which tells me that I was striking the ball quite well. Looking forward to the next couple of days, it will be a lot of fun."

Can you imagine the hype if Aberg were to win his last two starts before the Ryder Cup, including the premier tournament on the European Tour?

All of it has been part of a special run for Aberg over the last several months. Since the Masters, he has accomplished the following:

  • Win at the Big 12 Championship
  • Win at the NCAA regional
  • Sweep of the Ben Hogan Award, Haskins Award and Jack Nicklaus Award
  • No. 2 driver in the world (min. 20 measured rounds) behind only Scottie Scheffler
  • Win at the European Masters
  • Named to the Ryder Cup team
  • Shooting a 68-66 on McIlroy and Hovland in one of the biggest and most important tournaments in the world

An astonishing run for somebody who was playing college golf this time eight months ago.

And while the Ryder Cup will be the highlight of his 2023, a win this weekend at Wentworth would both be the biggest (by far) of his young career and add to the hype and the substance of somebody who is clearly becoming one of the best players in the world.

The BMW PGA Championship is considered the DP World Tour’s flagship event, and rightfully so given the list of past winners. Among some of the game’s best player to claim the title have been Tony Jacklin, Arnold Palmer, Nick Faldo, Seve Ballesteros, Bernhard Langer, Ian Woosnam, Jose Maria Olazabal, Colin Montgomerie and Rory McIlroy. And recent champs have also double as major winners, too, including Francesco Molinari, Danny Willett and Shane Lowry, winner a year ago at Wentworth .

Suffice it to say, joining this honor roll is something New Zealand’s Ryan Fox certainly aspired to do this week. But the way he grabbed it on Sunday was particularly impressive. A closing 67 that included a triple bogey on the third hole then eight birdies on his final 13 holes—capped by a six-footer on the 18th—allowed him to beat Tyrrell Hatton by one stroke.

The 36-year-old had won three times previously on the DP World Tour, but this victory was the most prestigious. The Rolex Series event offers an overall prize money payout of $9 million with Fox claiming at first-place payday of $1.53 million.

Who is Ryan Fox? The New Zealand golfer is moving up the Masters leaderboard

pga tour leaderboard wentworth

Ryan Fox has entered the green jacket discussion after his sizzling start to the third round of the Masters.

Fox birdied holes 1, 2 and 3 and is in the top 10. A relative unknown, the New Zealand professional golfer is making just his second Masters appearance and has yet to record a top-10 finish all year.

Here's everything to know about Fox:

Who is Ryan Fox?

REQUIRED READING: Masters live updates for Round 3

REQUIRED READING: Denny McCarthy honors 16-year-old at 2024 Masters who died of cancer

Fox is 37 years old and has dual membership on the PGA and DP World tours.

He turned pro in 2012 and immediately had top fourth-place finishes on the PGA Tour of Australasia before breaking through in 2014 with a win at the Western Australia Open. He then won the Queensland PGA Championship in 2015 and in 2017 earned his card for the European Tour, where he grabbed his first win in 2019 with the ISPS Handa World Super 6 Perth.

After a drought, Fox won the Ras al Khaimah Classic in 2022 and earned special temporary membership on the  PGA Tour a year later. In September 2023, Fox won the  BMW PGA Championship  at Wentworth.

In 2024, Fox has made just three made cuts in eight PGA starts this season, no finish better than T35. But that's looking to change this weekend.

Ryan Fox's Masters results, major tournament history
