Robert E. Lee and Arlington National Cemetery

Descendants of enslaved, enslavers gather for reconciliation talks in Va.

arlington house tour

One hundred and sixty years after the last men, women and children enslaved on Robert E. Lee’s plantation were set free, their families returned from across the country to reunite with each other and their history.

But this would not be an ordinary reunion. On Saturday, descendants of the enslaved gathered on the grounds of Arlington House, the Robert E. Lee Memorial in Arlington National Cemetery, for a ceremony to honor their ancestors. And they were joined there by descendants of those prominent Americans who had once enslaved their ancestors.

Sitting side by side on white folding chairs behind the stately Greek Revival-style mansion, more than 100 descendants of all of the families listened to songs, read the names of their ancestors and heard about plans for a patchwork quilt that would include each of their handprints.

They also made a demand.

They called on the country to change the name of the site which is maintained by the National Park Service. It should simply be known as Arlington House National Historic Site, they said, and drop the name of Lee altogether. They want the focus shifted away from an enslaver and instead on the many people who built, farmed, cooked, cleaned and cared for the property. Their lives, they said, had a value that was overlooked and could easily have been forgotten.

“Black history is American history,” Stephen Hammond, one of the principal organizers of the weekend and a descendant of the Syphax family, whose members were enslaved at the property,, said in an interview. “Robert E. Lee has a history here, but a lot of other people have a history here too.”

At the behest of the descendants, Rep. Don. Beyer (D-Va.) and Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Va.) introduced legislation in Congress last year that would remove “Robert E. Lee Memorial” from the official name of Arlington House. They are reintroducing it this year. It didn’t receive the necessary votes to get out of a House committee last year but Beyer is optimistic it will pass this year.

“The last thing we need to do is have memorials to people who were traitors to their country,” Beyer, whose district includes Arlington Cemetery and the Lee memorial, told the descendants on Saturday.

Tracy Lee Crittenberger, 64, the great-great-granddaughter of Robert E. Lee, who commanded the Confederate Army during the Civil War, admitted Beyer’s words “stung a little.”

“But I totally understand what he’s saying,” she said. “You can’t shy away from that, you can’t sugar coat it.”

Crittenberger said she fully supports removing her great-great-grandfather’s name from the site. “It’s important that everyone knows this is a place where so many people lived,” she said. “It’s not just the Robert E. Lee museum. It has to be inclusive.”

The reunion, long in the planning, was an opportunity to “touch people and inspire people and celebrate our shared past together,” said Hammond, who is a family historian and occasionally gives tours of the property.

Many participants said that the nation is still vexed by race, still struggling mightily to find its way forward. But if there was tension or trepidation in bringing the descendants of all of these families together, it didn’t show. The mood instead was one of restoration and hope that in a time of rancor and divide, this gathering could inspire further reconciliation.

“To get all of the families to participate is remarkable,” said Carol Gleed Weaver, 76, who came from Phoenix for the event and whose ancestors were enslaved on the property. She met many of the other descendants for the first time this weekend but already felt a connection. “You see the camaraderie that has built up. They’re accepting of us and we’re accepting of them. We hope the rest of the country can come together as we have.”

Sarah Kowalski, of Philadelphia, said she was “incredibly moved” to take part in the gathering. Kowalski, who brought her young daughter with her to the event, is a descendant of Robert E. Lee’s uncle. “I could really feel the presence of our ancestors on both sides and it just feels inspiring being here with these descendants,” she said. “Especially as we think about the future.”

The plantation was started in 1803 by George Washington Parke Custis, the stepgrandson of George Washington. Lee married Custis’s daughter, Mary Anna Randolph Custis, in 1831, at the home and the couple lived there until just after the Civil War began.

All of the families taking part in the event, including the Branhams, Custises, Grays, Henrys, Lees, Parks and Syphaxes, wore light blue T-shirts emblazoned with “Ask me about my family.” It was a choice, they said, to emphasize that they want to share this history and their unique story.

Ataro Parks-Lewis lives in Woodbridge, not far from Arlington House. He is a descendant of James Parks, who was born into slavery on the property. After he was freed during the Civil War, Parks continued to work there and went on to work for Arlington National Cemetery for 61 years. He is the only person born on the property who was later interred at the cemetery.

But for Parks-Lewis, 40, Saturday’s event was the first time he had visited Arlington House. “Now I feel much more of a connection,” he said, as descendants of all of the families gathered for a photo. “It feels like family. I’ll absolutely bring my family here so they can learn their history. I plan to come here quite often.”

“Magical” is how Tamara Moore, 72, of Arlington, a great-granddaughter of James Parks, described the dinner held the night before with descendants from all of the families.

“We ate together and we talked and we laughed,” Moore said. “We realized we had individual stories, but all of our stories are connected as we forge a new path.”

As the ceremony drew to a close, Hammond asked the descendants and guests to form a circle on the lawn set between two cabins that once served as living quarters for enslaved people. They held hands and sang along as Arlington’s Mt. Zion Baptist Church led into “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” the anthem that has long been the galvanizing song of America’s Black civil rights movements.

Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us,

Sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us;

Facing the rising sun of our new day begun,

Let us march on ’til victory is won.

There were hugs after. And many wiped away tears. They then returned to their seats as representatives from each family signed a joint commitment letter from the descendants and the Park Service stating their intention to have Arlington House more fully reflect the lives of all of the people who once called it home.

A previous version of this article said Stephen Hammond was a descendant of Charles Syphax. Hammond is a descendant of the Syphax family but not a direct descendant of Charles Syphax. The article has been corrected.

Important information for buying tickets during the TaylorSwiftTix Presale powered by Verified Fan:

Our goal is to maximize the number of fans who have an opportunity to shop.

The link in your text will direct you to the show you were selected for — either a show that was available during registration or a show that was announced after registration closed.

If you were selected for a show available during registration, your code will enable you to shop  that  show  or any show in the same city  that was announced after registration closed. (You will not be able to shop a different show that was available during registration).

If you were selected for a show announced after registration closed — i.e., the link in your text directs you to one of those shows — your code is good for that show. We recommend you use the code for that show as it will have the greatest availability for you. If you choose, you can use your code instead for the show you prioritized first during registration; however, we expect demand for that show to be higher and your wait to be longer.

Remember, each code only allows you to purchase 6 tickets.

No. Only fans who have been verified and invited to shop by receiving an access code will have the opportunity to purchase tickets during the TaylorSwiftTix Presale powered by Verified Fan.

Receiving an access code means that you’ll have the opportunity to shop for tickets. However, the ability to purchase tickets is determined by supply and demand, and is not guaranteed. Tickets are available on a first come, first serve basis.

  • Please only join the Waiting Room once and only use one tab per show to reduce any delays.
  • Once you join the Waiting Room, do not close your page.

I got an email telling me that I’m on the Waitlist, what does that mean?

Due to extremely high demand, not all fans who register may be invited to purchase tickets during the TaylorSwiftTix Presale powered by Verified Fan. What are the health check requirements?

FC Barcelona return to the United States for preseason tour

FC Barcelona return to the United States for preseason tour

The FC Barcelona men’s first team will repeat the last season’s destination and travel once again to the United States for their preseason tour, BARÇA ON TOUR: US 2023, in which they will play a total of four matches, all against European opposition. The first two games will be played in California; 22 July against Juventus in Santa Clara, San Francisco Bay Area, and on 26 July against Arsenal FC. The last two games will take place in Dallas Texas, for the clash with Real Madrid on 29 July and in Las Vegas where the tour will conclude with a game against AC Milan.

The US Summer Tour 2022 saw the Barça play on the East Coast with games in Miami and New York – as well as games in Las Vegas and Dallas – cities which hosted the majority of the Club’s institutional and social activities. This year the geographical emphasis has shifted to the West Coast where the majority of the Club’s activities will take place and where they will play three of their four scheduled games.

mini_3200x2000_web

The blaugranes’ debut on the tour will come on 22 July against Juventus in the Levis Stadium, Santa Clara in San Francisco, home of the NFL’s San Francisco 49ers. It will be the third time that Barça have played at the venue which has room for 68,000 fans following matches against Manchester United in 2015 and AC Milan in 2018. The most recent encounter between Barça and Juventus came in a friendly last season on tour, the game ended in a 2-2 draw.

The other games in California will come against Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal side on 26 July in the SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, Los Angeles, a venue opened in 2020 with a capacity of 70,000 and the ground where the Los Angeles Chargers and Los Angeles Rams of the NFL play their home matches. The fixture between the two sides will be their first in seven seasons, the last meeting having come in the last sixteen of the UEFA Champions League in 2016 in which Barça won 2-0 in London and 3-1 at Spotify Camp Nou. The game will also be the first on American soil between the two clubs.

Another Clásico in Arlington, Texas

The summer tour this year will also include one of the most awaited matches for the fans, the Clásico, the third meeting between Barça and Real Madrid in the USA. He game will take place at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas which has a capacity of 80,000 and is home to the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys. The venue is one that Barça have visited twice previously; in 2011 against Manchester United and in 2018 against AS Roma. In their two previous games against Real Madrid in the US, Barça have come out on top both times: winning 3-2 at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami in 2017 and 1-0 at the Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas in 2022.

The Allegiant Stadium, which holds 65,000 fans, will be the venue for the final game of the tour for Xavi Hernández’s men against AC Milan, the third game on the west coast. The two teams have met on two previous occasions on US soil with a 2-0 win for Barça in 2003 in Washington and a 1-0 win for the Italians in 2018 in Santa Clara.

These four games during BARÇA ON TOUR: US 2023 are part of the Soccer Champions Tour, a tournament put together by Sixth Street in collaboration with Legends and AEG, and in which, aside from Barça and their four opponents on the tour, Manchester United will also be participating.

The USA, a popular destination for blaugrana preseason

This summer’s tour will be the 14 th in FC Barcelona history to the USA (the first in 1937 was key in the Club’s survival), a country that has become a popular destination in recent years with tours taking place in 2011, 2015, 2017, 2018, the latter being a joint tour with the women’s team, as well as 2019 and 2022.

In fact, the North American market in a key priority for the globalisation and expansion the Barça brand. Football is undergoing a great period of growth in the USA that trend will hopefully continue with the next World Cup in 2026 taking place on North American soil. Furthermore, FC Barcelona opened a US office in New York in 2016 and continues its efforts to build a greater connection with its existing fans and win more followers and reach agreements with local sponsors to help develop even further the country’s footballing ecosystem.
