Tadej Pogačar Will Chase the Rainbow Jersey
The 2023 Tour de France runner-up has been confirmed for the UCI Road Race World Championships on August 6.
Remco Evenepoel’s bid to keep his rainbow jersey just got a bit trickier, as it was announced this morning that Tadej Pogačar will be heading to Glasgow in a few weeks to race the UCI World Championships.
“It is official @tamaupogi is going to @CyclingWorlds World Championship 2023 in Glasgow! Cycling @TeamSlovenia is going to be the strongest by the number of Slovenian cyclists, mountain bikers and BMX riders in history!” the tweet read.
It’s been an eagerly anticipated decision, one that has been hit with some doubts as Pogačar cleared a few events from his calendar in the wake of the Tour, citing fatigue.
Pogačar is coming off a strong though disappointing Tour de France, one in which he trailed eventual winner Jonas Vingegaard by mere seconds until the Jumbo-Visma rider blew everyone out of the water with a ride for the ages in stage 16, the Tour’s lone time trial.
It was Pogačar’s second consecutive second-place finish behind the 26-year-old Dane. It was a showing some initially doubted, however, after Pogačar crashed during this year’s Liège-Bastogne-Liège , breaking his wrist a mere six weeks prior to this year’s grand départ.
Reigning world champion Evenepoel is coming off a big win at this weekend’s Clásica San Sebastián, his third time winning the mid-summer classic . It was a victory that followed a quiet early summer, as Evenepoel has only raced four times since abandoning the Giro d’Italia—where he was the odds-on favorite to win the pink jersey— in May .
Though Pogačar is arguably most known for his Tour de France wins Grand Tours, he’s equally adept at one-day races. With victories at the Giro di Lombardia, Tour of Flanders, Liège-Bastogne-Liège, Amstel Gold, Flèche Wallonne, and Strade Bianche to his palmarès, the stage is set for what could be an epic head-to-head showdown. It was a showdown that was much anticipated ahead of this year’s Liège-Bastogne-Liège but one that was unfortunately cut short in the wake of Pogačar’s early-race crash. Evenepoel went on to win the race with a breathtaking solo attack .
And while all the talk will likely surround the rematch of Pogačar and Evenepoel, Mathieu van der Poel, Wout Van Aert, Julian Alaphilippe, and Peter Sagan, along with plenty more of the world’s strongest riders, will be in Glasgow, vying for the rainbows.
The 2023 UCI Cycling World Championships will be held from August 3 to 13 in Glasgow, with the road race wrapping up all events on the competition’s final day.

Tadej Pogacar won the Tour of Flanders on Sunday with a searing solo attack in the final 20 kilometers on the 274-kilometer one-day race.
The Slovenian two-time Tour de France winner now has four Monuments (ultra-long one-day races) to his name. On Sunday, he finished 17sec ahead of last year's winner Mathieu van der Poel.
The 24-year-old Pogacar is attempting the rare crossover of Grand Tour riders to try and win the epic one-day races, known as Monuments.
His soaring triumph makes him the first man since the great Eddy Merckx to win both the Tour de France and the Tour of Flanders (1969, 1975).
Pogacar has twice won the Tour of Lombardy and has won one Liege-Bastogne-Liege, making this his fourth.
"It's a day I will never forget," said Pogacar who was handed a large portion of local specialty chips at the finish line.
"I almost cracked on the last climb, but it was the only way to go," he said referring to his great rival Van der Poel being a stronger sprinter in a two-up finish. "I feel I can retire after this win and be super proud and happy."
Pogacar has two Monuments he needs to win to have collected all five.
"Milan-SanRemo looks like the hardest to go and get, and I might need to put on some weight to win (Paris) Roubaix," he said of the remaining two.
Van der Poel was at the heart of the frenetic opening period as the race rolled out of Bruges, and the pace began to take its toll in the lush green Flemish plains on a cold day with low-hanging grey skies.
And the Dutch one-day specialist never gave up, even producing a last surge over the final kilometer, before exchanging smiles, hugs and congratulations with Pogacar.
The race had been billed as a battle of the big three, also including world ranked No.1 Wout van Aert.
"Mathieu and Tadej are strong uphill, but we can counter with the team we have," said the Belgian, who was indeed brought back to the leaders by teammates twice before wilting on the last climb.
Van Aert finished with five other riders at 1min 12sec.
The race turned in a way on a mass fall of around 40 riders when Bahrain Victorious man Filip Maciejuk hit a pot hole while trying to get around the peloton on a verge of grass.
Wout van Aert picked up an injury, while Pogacar and Ineos hope Tom Pidcock lost teammates. The culprit was thrown off the race.
"I'm really sorry for my mistake and causing the crash today," Maciejuk said. "I hope all those involved are in good health and safe. This should not happen and was a big error in my judgment."
Around 750,000 people showed up along the route to cheer on the peloton, with shuttle buses and and extra trains for what is seen by many as an unofficial world championship.

Well that's a pretty low quality field

And Davide Bais is sure to be in the breakaway ever day.
Terrible field actually. Not that it's that fun to watch Pogacar sweep a few conti riders. Double Kolovrat is a really big stage but the rest is pretty meeeh.
Devil's Elbow
There really should be a maximum on the amount of .WT and .Pro races overlapping. Both this and ZLM last week have absolutely awful fields relative to their categorisation.

Samamba said: Like Jumbo? There were 0 teams actually there because of relegation stuff. DSM is a dutch team, they benefitted way too much from it obviously (more than 400 points which is ridiculous) but they would always be there. Jumbo and Alpecin have nothing to do with relegation, so maybe only Astana. It's an awful race because it has an awful parcours and mainly cause it overlaps with Dauphiné, Suisse and Belgian races. Then there's also Slovenia and Occitanie the week after. In the past it was actually quite decent with the Gileppe stage and more good teams there cause Belgium Tour was at the end of May. Just too many race at the same time. A race like ZLM should simply be downgraded to .1 honestly. Their field does not warrant that many points at all. Slovenia neither honestly but atleast it had a good UAE team the past few years. Honestly. June should just have lesser races. Let the Giro guys rest (instead of using for points indeed), and let the Tour guys prep in the same races so we atleast get some good riders battling it out. Click to expand...
You guys are just too demanding. We will have a legendary duel of Fortunato vs Zanna. Zanna especially was flying in the Giro, especially the stage where he broke out hearts and outsprinted Pinot in a mountain stage. I think Ulissi and Wellens will have a tough task on their hands.
Isn't Novak riding for UAE?

PREVIEW | Tour of Slovenia 2023
Preview . From the 14th to the 18th of June takes place the Tour of Slovenia , a race that has in recent years gained notoriety because of the nation's stars, and one that is now more often used as preparation for the Tour de France.
Stage 1 of the race sees the riders head into Rogaska Slatina, a day that should be for the sprinters however it features quite a lot of rolling hills throughout the day.
Profiles & Route Tour of Slovenia 2023
The best suited day for the sprinters. Stage 2 of the Tour of Slovenia sees the riders race from Zalec and Ormoz throughout 163 kilometers, not a pan-flat day, but the small ascents that come close to the finish shouldn't be enough to disrupt a bunch sprint.
Stage 3 could open the overall classification. There will be a rather long ascent early in the day however it shouldn't be decisive to the outcome of the day. It'll be in Postojna that the stage will be decided, there is a decently tough hill just inside the final 15 kilometers that could split things up, a very open finale.
Final startlist Tour of Slovenia with Mohoric, Wellens, Groenewegen, Bauhaus, De Marchi and Fortunato
The queen stage, very clearly and quite a difficult one. The race has been here quite a lot in the past, this year it'll be ridden twice the ascent to Kolovrat. It's 10.1 kilometers long at 8.9% and the riders will have to go up it twice before reaching the finish in Kobarid.
The final day of the race is the best suited to a breakaway, with big gaps in the overall classification created many will have freedom and the climbing start to the day should see many trying. Whether they succeed or not the stage could see it's decision in the climb to Trska Gora which is 1.7 kilometers at 9.8%, which will also serve as a last spot to attack the overall classification.

Torej, kaj pravite, boste zraven?

Tadej Pogacar the toast of Slovenia after bizarre Tour de France
Masked team presentations in Nice, positive Covid-19 test for Tour director ... it was a strange Tour but the winner looks like he is here to stay at the head of exciting young breed of cyclists
T he youngest winner of the Tour de France in a century rode into the city of light at sunset on Sunday, looking every inch the awestruck kid, as Tadej Pogacar became the first Slovenian to win the yellow jersey . On Friday night it had been his friend, Primoz Roglic, who had been planning a party in Paris. But less than 24 hours later, in a sporting robbery to match Manchester United’s defeat of Bayern Munich in the 1999 Champions League final, Pogacar, who will be 22 on Monday, had trampled all over his countryman’s best-laid plans.
In a time-trial performance to the top of La Planche des Belles Filles that drew multiple superlatives and, this being the Tour, a few raised eyebrows, Pogacar stormed through Roglic’s 57-seconds advantage to beat the long-term race leader by almost two minutes. It was his third stage win of the race, adding to his mountain stage wins in Laruns and Grand Colombier.
Some, including the four-times Tour winner Chris Froome, predicted Roglic might fade and they were proved right. Without the protection of his team, the 30‑year‑old wilted, fighting the gradient and struggling with a new aerodynamic helmet that grew increasingly lopsided as his torment increased.
“It didn’t work so good, huh?” Roglic said, dryly, of his new helmet, before adding: “I struggled with everything.”
Pogacar, in contrast, was unerring as an arrow, attacking the climb with speed and purpose. Even before the last time check, Roglic’s goose was clearly cooked. By the time Roglic laboured into the final 100m, Pogacar and his management team were jumping for joy.
“I just went deep,” Pogacar said. “I knew the climb very well and I went flat out from bottom to top. My dream was just to be in the Tour and now I’ve won.”
Roglic, meanwhile, sat gasping on the road, comforted by the two Jumbo-Visma teammates, Tom Dumoulin and Wout van Aert, who had given him the most support. Roglic took some time to compose himself but when he did meet the media late on Saturday evening, he was gracious and without any bitterness.
“I will cry,” he said. “I did already, but it was how it is. I want it to be different, but I can’t change it. I just need to go on. Tadej was in a different world and he definitely deserves his win so really, congratulations to him.
“I didn’t know I was going to have a bad day, but I was just losing and losing. I was hoping Tadej would have some hard moments, so I was trying to believe in myself the whole race, but I was very far from it.”
It was a fitting end to a race that almost did not happen and that had a strange atmosphere throughout, from the masked team presentations in Nice to the positive test for Covid-19 of the Tour director, Christian Prudhomme, and to a socially distanced thumbs-up shared by Roglic and the French President, Emmanuel Macron, last Friday.
Barring a couple of tedious stages that resembled an upmarket sportive, there has been plenty to write home about. If, in the absence of Froome and Geraint Thomas, British interest in the yellow jersey was at its lowest for a decade, the generational change sweeping through the peloton was engrossing.
Old lags such as Alejandro Valverde, of Movistar, a veteran of 27 Grand Tours, will soon have to step aside. The kids – from the irrepressible Pogacar to Van Aert and his teammate Sepp Kuss, to Marc Hirschi of Team Sunweb, Enric Mas of Movistar, and Neilson Powless and Dani Martínez of Education First – have all made their mark.
The past two Tour winners, Pogacar and Egan Bernal, have been among the youngest in history. With Froome moving to pastures new and Thomas celebrating his 35th birthday in May, the Ineos Grenadiers chief, Dave Brailsford, is also turning to youth. Bernal misfired badly but at 23 he has plenty of time to rediscover his mojo.
“When you look at the life cycle of our team, there’s an older, very successful group over on one side, and then a younger up-and-coming group,” Brailsford said on Saturday. “Jumbo are right smack in the middle of that maturity curve. So it’s a transition really. But we’re bringing in some experience and some new young talent and we’re building again.”
Tom Pidcock, from Leeds, the former junior, world and European under-23 champion is among the highly rated riders now confirmed as joining next year.
Brailsford batted away suggestions that Bernal’s leadership status had been damaged by his failed title defence. “To start with we sat tight and on that first rest day we were in a really strong position. But then in that period between the first rest day and the second rest day, Egan pulled out ,” he said.
“He’ll be back. It’s been a big year for him and I’m sure this experience will give him real drive and focus.”
Bernal and Brailsford will have to contend with the march of the Slovenians. Despite the murky histories of some members of his team management, Pogacar’s youthful success was embraced by the race organisation. He raps, he uses TikTok, he rides like it is fun.
Stalked by a pandemic, rejected by some as old-school and craving a younger following, for Prudhomme and the Tour ‘Pog’ is, for the moment at least, the breath of fresh air they need.

'Strade Bianche is pure fun' – Tadej Pogacar ready for successful season debut
Slovenian keen to respond to Evenepoel's and Vingegaard's early season success
Tadej Pogačar will make his season debut at Strade Bianche on Saturday, happy to be back racing and hungry for a second victory on the spectacular gravel roads of Tuscany.
The Slovenian has trained quietly at home in Monte Carlo in recent weeks, watching his Grand Tour rivals Jonas Vingegaard and Remco Evenepoel dominate their early races.
He's opted for a reduced spring programme to prepare for his Giro d'Italia-Tour de France double attempt in the summer but is bursting with energy and enthusiasm after getting a taste of the gravel roads of Strade Bianche during a route reconnaissance on Thursday.
"In the last few days, I really felt the desire to race, to have some fun. I'm really motivated, I can't wait to get going," Pogačar admitted to La Gazzetta dello Sport in an exclusive interview.
Tadej Pogacar 'racing for the win’ on season debut at Strade Bianche Matxin: 'I am convinced that Tadej Pogacar will do even better than last year' 'A new challenge' – Tadej Pogacar takes on Giro d'Italia, Tour de France, Olympics and Worlds in 2024 Tim Wellens: If anybody can do the Giro-Tour double, it’s Tadej Pogacar
Pogačar posted several photographs of his recon ride on social media, including on the final climb to central Siena up the steep Via Santa Caterina and in the stunning Piazza del Campo that hosts the annual Palio horse race and the finish of Strade Bianche.
He has ridden Strade Bianche every season since turning professional except for 2023 when he targeted Paris-Nice . He won two years ago with a 50km solo attack and the combination of gravel roads and steep climb seems to suit him perfectly.
Gazzetta listed Pogačar as their only five-star favourite and everyone else knows they will have to beat Pogačar and his strong UAE Team Emirates squad if they want to win in Siena on Saturday.
"It's different from every other race,'' Pogačar said of Strade Bianche with enthusiasm. "I love the route and the gravel sectors. Then there are lots of climbs that suit me too. Strade Bianche is pure fun.
"It was one of the first one-day races I rode as a professional [in 2019 – Ed]. I loved it from that first time. It's a kind of chaos. Year after year I saw how I progressed until I was able to win it in 2022.
"It makes me feel like a kid again, especially when we race hard on the climbs. I also love Tuscany. It's a pity not to have ever been here on holiday but that's a goal for the future."
Strade Bianche will be his season debut but on Friday, he told Cyclingnews and Sporza that he's confident in his preparation.
"I like this race and I like to have good preparation this year, so yeah, a little bit different approach to the start of the season," he said. "But we can see if it was a good choice tomorrow or not, like every year."
The Slovenian didn't agree with the organisers' decision to add in an extra loop of gravel, saying, "In my opinion, it kills a little bit the the purpose of Santa Maria sector. If it's my decision, if I need to put more kilometres, I would do it a different way.
"But for sure it's going to be an interesting race, A little bit different racing than previous years editions a little bit different approach to the final and we can see it's going to be a really long race and a hard final."
Pogačar last raced in early October when he won Il Lombardia for a third consecutive time. In recent weeks he has watched from home as Remco Evenepoel and Jonas Vingegaard impress at the Volta ao Algarve and O Gran Camiño.
With Pogačar not racing Paris-Nice or Tirreno-Adriatico, he will only race against them off nearer the Tour de France but he is keen to respond to their success with an exploit of his own.
"It gives me extra motivation to do something like they have done and show that I've been training well too," he said with a hint of pride.
"Remco and Jonas were impressive not only because they won but because they did it in a special way. But we've also got to remember that the season won't be judged on our early results."
Pogačar wants to win Strade and will have full support from UAE Team Emirates but is focused on the Giro-Tour double. He has a new coach after Javier Sola replaced Iñigo San Millán, shaking up his training plans.
"Sometimes a kind of shock to the system and a change can be good to avoid doing the same things," Pogačar explained, fully focused on being at his best for the peak years of his career.
"Cycling is crazy, so you have to always be working to stay at the top but that's okay. At this high level, a career doesn't last that long, so you've got to concentrate 100%. I've got lots of time afterwards to enjoy things."
The Giro-Tour double includes extra training, more stage reconnaissance and working to optimise his time trial position. Pogačar is the standout favourite for the Corsa Rosa but won't hold back and think about the subsequent Tour de France.
"It's a huge task to target two Grand Tours and try to win both, like I hope to do," he said. "It needs a lot of work and sacrifice but fortunately, my team and the people around me are helping a lot. That makes it easier.
"l'll definitely give 100% in the Giro. It's impossible to make calculations when you're racing. I believe in my ability and so I think I'll have time after the Giro to recover for the Tour de France. It'll be a full-gas Giro."

Ploegbaas UAE-Team Emirates lyrisch over Ayuso
Hoe goed is Ayuso precies? Volgens Matxin héél goed. 'Juan is heel erg professioneel.
