Species 116 - Delta Quadrant [ ]

Species 116 displayed an aptitude for "seeing patterns where others see only confusion" allowing them to notice patterns of all forms and precisely extrapolate that pattern further which enabled them to learn the correct grammar and syntax of entire languages after only hearing a few phrases. Other forms of patterns such as encryption algorithms were also very easy for this race to decipher.

Species 116 utilized a propulsion system named a Quantum Slipstream which enabled them to "avoid the storm on the horizon" and outrun the Borg for centuries before the Borg became more and more capable of pursuing the vessels due to the assimilation of Transwarp technology , expanding and assimilating the surrounding systems until finally the species were cornered in their own space. (VOY - "Hope and Fear"). Then the Species 8472 war broke out between the Collective, Species 116 saw this as their last hope that the Borg would be destroyed before the U.S.S. Voyager aided the Borg against the invaders for their own personal gain. (VOY - "Scorpion"). Due to their assistance, the Borg defeated species 8472 and assimilated all but 10,000 members of species 116 which held Voyager accountable for the destruction of their race as the Collective continued to expand and finally surrounded their system with hundreds of cubes (VOY - "Hope and Fear").

Species 125 - Delta Quadrant [ ]

This is the species from which the Borg Queen herself originates, the species possessed an over-sized cranial region exhibiting telepathy and extraordinary mental processing capacity. When they are sufficiently challenged enough to be required to give their tasks a degree of attention, they will twitch their heads and when extremely challenged they will focus by closing their eyes.

Species 149 [ ]

Species 149 was regarded as a medically technologically advanced species. The Borg assimilated knowledge involving nanoprobes for the reanimation of a lifeform as long as 73 hours following death. Provided the neural pathways are intact, 70 micrograms of nanoprobes which are pre-modified to the specific subject's physiology are sufficient to reverse cellular necrosis while the cerebral cortex is stimulated with a neural electric isopulse at 1 second intervals, Nanoprobes can compensate for any cellular degradation after the technique is completed. However, the subject requires regular doses of additional modified nanoprobes until the victim's cells are capable of functioning on their own (VOY - "Mortal Coil").

Species 180 - Ferengi - Alpha Quadrant [ ]

Species 180 name themselves as Ferengi. Ferengi were encountered early by the Collective. However, why a vessel belonging to a race originating in the Alpha Quadrant was found in the Delta Quadrant remains a mystery.

Ferengi. Species 180

Species 218 - Talaxian - Delta Quadrant [ ]

Species 218 name themselves as Talaxians. The Collective assimilated a small freighter belonging to Species 218 in the Dalmine Sector, assimilating the crew of 39. Their dense musculature made them excellent tactical drones. (VOY - "The Raven")

Neelix, Talaxian, Species 218

Species 259 [ ]

Species 259 are an advanced omnicordial lifeform which inhabited Galactic Cluster 3. The species numbered some 22 billion when they were assimilated and had developed an advanced pattern-duplication design that was later incorporated into Borg autonomous regeneration sequencer technology.

Species 262 [ ]

Deemed to be a relatively primitive species by Borg standards, following their assimilation in the 22nd century. Their mythology referred to a substance which could "burn the sky". The Borg were intrigued and later discovered it to be a reference to the Particle 010 (Omega Molecule)

Species 263 [ ]

Deemed to be a relatively primitive species by Borg standards, Species 263 was the second in a series of thirteen species assimilated in the pursuit of attaining any and all information relative to Particle 010. In the mythology of the species, they believed the molecule to be a drop of blood from their creator.

Species 312 [ ]

Species 312 was a race assimilated by the Borg before 2374 possessing advanced tetryon-based energy barrier technology. Sometime before their assimilation, the race constructed an energy barrier around the planet Ledos in the Delta Quadrant. This was several hundred years before 2377, to protect the primitive race on the surface from the interference of other warp capable species.

Species 329 - Kazon - Delta Quadrant [ ]

Species 329 name themselves as Kazon, a relatively primitive, yet warp-capable species with a limited understanding of the technology in their possession which they gained control of after conquering their former oppressors. Their technology and biological lifeform was deemed unworthy of assimilation.

Species 407 [ ]

A species named the Lennli.

Species 521 - Delta Quadrant [ ]

A humanoid species native to the Delta Quadrant.

Species 571 - Delta Quadrant [ ]

A humanoid race based in the Delta Quadrant which according to their own established mythology worship the god Brothera. The species was assimilated sometime before 2369 after-which three drones escaped from a Borg Sphere which crashed landed on Planet 1865-Alpha severing the three drones from the Collective mind.

Species 689 - Norcadian - Delta Quadrant [ ]

Species 689 name themselves Norcadian, an advanced humanoid species native to the Delta Quadrant and the planet Norcadia Prime. This species hosts a violent sport named Tsunkatse.

Norcadian, Species 689

Species 2000 - Cardassian - Alpha Quadrant [ ]

Species 2000 name themselves Cardassian, a warp-capable species native to the Alpha Quadrant and the planet Cardassia Prime. Known to be highly xenophobic and ruthless.

Cardassian, Species 2000

Species 2461 - Brunali - Delta Quadrant [ ]

Brunali were once a standard space faring species. However, following the Borg constructing a transwarp conduit directly to their homeworld, they became subject to frequent attacks by vessels passing by. Following this, the species returned to a low state of technology with all of their remaining technology hidden beneath the surface. No longer possessing advanced space faring weaponry, the Brunali turned to their skills in genetic technology. Engineering a number of their children with an anti-Borg pathogen encoded in their DNA, they used their children as weapons, sending them towards their nearby transwarp conduit for the purpose of infecting Borg vessels.

Distinctive Technology: The Brunali Pathogen - upon assimilation, the pathogen kills every drone aboard the vessel, the pathogen is, however, unable to cross the defenses of the Vinculum which prevents it from infecting the entire Collective. Vessels infected with pathogens of this nature are disconnected from the Hive Mind.

Brunali, Species 2461

Species 3105 - Rhawn [ ]

Species 3259 - vulcan - alpha quadrant [ ].

The Vulcan species are primarily pacifists by nature. Although space-faring, they maintain a strong connection to their established religion. The species is most notable for their extremely developed mental abilities and touch-telepathy.

Vulcan, Species 3259

Species 3783 - Romulan - Alpha Quadrant [ ]

Romulan, Species 3783

Species 4228 - Hazari - Delta Quadrant [ ]

The Hazari are a race of bounty hunters in the Delta Quadrant. Their physiology made excellent tactical drones.

Species 4774 - Skedan [ ]

Species 5008 - klingon - alpha quadrant [ ].

Klingon, Species 5008

Species 5174 - Delta Quadrant [ ]

A race native to the Delta Quadrant, the Borg once encountered a small vessel belonging to the species. The crew onboard had been eviscerated, the Borg considered the matter irrelevant and did not investigate further. It was later revealed the Hirogen were responsible.

Species 5618 - Human - Alpha Quadrant [ ]

An unremarkable race in terms of biological distinctiveness, possessing below-average cranial capacity, minimal redundant systems and limited regenerative abilities. Humans are, however, technologically advanced. They are also the founding race of the United Federation of Planets, an alliance of 150 races spanning 8,000 lightyears. Humans are considered by the Borg to be a highly resistant species. Several direct attempts to assimilate the species have failed (Star Trek: First Contact, TNG - "Best of Both Worlds") The Borg are currently developing a new method of assimilation via a nanoprobe virus.

Seven Of Nine, liberated from the collective.

Species 5973 [ ]

Species 5973 is the designation for a multispectral particle lifeform native to Galactic Cluster 8.

Species 6291 - Yridian - Alpha & Beta Quadrants [ ]

Yridians are renowned information merchants native to the Alpha and Beta Quadrants.

Species 6339 - Grid 124, Octant 22-Theta [ ]

Species 6339 are a humanoid, warp-capable species originating in Grid 124, Octant 22-theta. The Borg encountered the species in 2371. By 2375, the Collective had assimilated over eleven billion individuals. Due to their partial extinctions as a result of the Bor g, Species 6339 maintained extremely well-armed vessels, possessing over 22 phaser cannons on their aft sections alone. In 2375, the Borg detected a shuttle craft belonging to Species 6339 possessing 13 lifeforms aboard. A cube was dispatched to intercept and assimilate the vessel. However, Species 6339 had developed and infected the lifeforms with a synthetic pathogen designed to attack the programming of a Borg vessel's vinculum causing it to malfunction. Due to the malfunctioning vinculums, the drones on-board developed a form of multiple-personality disorder and partial insanity resulting in the destruction of the Borg cube. Each Borg vessel which attempted to retrieve the vinculum would also be affected, which Species 6339 hoped would result in the eventual destruction of hundreds of vessels (VOY "Infinite Regress").

Species 6961 - Katarian [ ]

Species 8472 - fluidic space [ ].

Species 8472 is regarded by the Borg as the ultimate form of biological evolution, they are a space-faring, telepathic, extremely xenophobic, non-humanoid species originating from an extradimensional realm named Fluidic Space. All of their technology is organic and is immune to all forms of technology such as: Borg nanoprobes, sensors, tractor beams, and transporter beams. They possess a triple-helix DNA coding making them the most densely-coded lifeform ever encountered.

A member of Species 8472.

Species 10026 [ ]

Species 10026 is the Borg designation for a warp-capable species whose homeworld was assimilated by the Borg in 2375 resulting in the assimilation of 392,000 lifeforms and 39 vessels. The Queen dispatched two Borg cubes and accompanied them within her own personal diamond. Initially, species 10026 dispatched vessels to intercept and combat the Borg using their modulating phaser pulse which allowed them to successfully damage Borg vessels. The Borg Queen was able to adapt easily by triaxilating the Borg vessels' shield geometry to absorb the phaser pulses. However, she allowed the vessels to attack her Diamond until her shields almost failed in an effort to provoke 7 of 9's assistance in adapting, and ultimately assimilating, the species.

Borg Species Numbers

species 3259 star trek fleet command

  • Designations are at least roughly chronological, with the earliest known being three-digit and the latest being five-digit numbers.
  • Numbers are assigned to any species the Borg encounter, no matter if and how many of them are assimilated or whether they are "distinctive" enough to be assimilated at all.

There is one reference for the number of assimilated species that is accordingly lower than the highest species designation: Seven of Nine says that the Borg have "referenced this condition [of romantic love] in over 6000 assimilated species" in VOY: "The Disease".

Species in Ascending Order

species 3259 star trek fleet command

Species 116 Arturis's species VOY: "Hope and Fear"

The whole race, except for 10,000-20,000, has been assimilated.

Species 125 Borg Queen's species VOY: "Dark Frontier"

The Borg Queen mentions to Seven that she came from Species 125.

Species 149 VOY: "Mortal Coil"

This species originally devised the procedure that led to Seven's method to save Neelix with nanoprobes.

species 3259 star trek fleet command

Species 180 Ferengi VOY: "Infinite Regress"

We don't know why Ferengi are categorized so early in Borg history. Maybe some of them ended up in a wormhole long ago, or Seven was simply confused and meant to say "Species 5180".

species 3259 star trek fleet command

Species 218 Talaxians VOY: "Mortal Coil"

Seven: "A small freighter, containing a crew of 39 taken in the Dalmine sector. They were easily assimilated. Their dense musculature made them excellent drones."

Species 259 from Galactic Cluster 3 VOY: "The Gift"

Their technology of autonomous regeneration sequencers was assimilated by the Borg.

Species 262 VOY: "The Omega Directive"

Assimilated 229 years ago. According to Seven, Species 262 was "primitive, but their oral history referred to a powerful substance which could burn the sky [the Omega Molecule]. "

Species 263 VOY: "The Omega Directive"

Seven: "They, too, were primitive and believed it [the Omega Molecule] was a drop of blood from their creator."

Species 312 VOY: "Natural Law"

They used a similar technology to the energy barrier encountered by Seven and Chakotay.

species 3259 star trek fleet command

Species 329 Kazon VOY: "Mortal Coil", "Relativity"

According to Seven of Nine, "they were unworthy of assimilation."

Species 521 Shivolians VOY: "Survival Instinct"

Seven and Naomi see a Shivolian in the mess hall, while Voyager is docked at the Markonian outpost.

species 3259 star trek fleet command

Species 571 species of Four of Nine, the younger male drone VOY: "Survival Instinct"

Four of Nine is against disassembling a dead drone, because this would be against the will of Brothara, a supernatural deity worshipped by Species 571.

species 3259 star trek fleet command

Species 689 Norcadians VOY: "Ashes to Ashes"

Mezoti identifies herself as being of that species number. We should trust her.

species 3259 star trek fleet command

Species 802 Medusans PRO: "Let Sleeping Borg Lie"

The Borg identify Zero when he connects with the Collective.

species 3259 star trek fleet command

Species 2461 Brunali VOY: "Child's Play"

Icheb belongs to this species. The number has not been ultimately confirmed, the information may come from the script.

Species 3259 Vulcans VOY: "The Raven"

Seven: "Vulcan. Species 3259. Your enlarged neocortex produces superior analytical abilities."

Species 4228 Hazari VOY: "Think Tank"

Seven: "Technologically advanced, extremely violent. They make excellent tactical drones."

Species 5174 VOY: "Hunters"

Seven mentions that a small ship of that species was found, the passengers killed (probably by the Hirogen).

Species 5618 Humans VOY: "Dark Frontier"

Borg Queen: " Species 5618, human. Warp-capable, origin grid 325, physiology inefficient, below average cranium capacity, minimum redundant systems, limited regenerative abilities."

Species 5973 VOY: "The Haunting of Deck Twelve"

When Neelix tells of an entity of possibly non-corporeal nature, Rebi suggests that it could have been Species 5973.

Species 6291 "Yridians" VOY: "Equinox"

Both the Borg and the Federation believed that the species was extinct. Note that these obviously can't be the familiar Yridians from TNG. The ultimate proof can be found in ENT: "Twilight".

species 3259 star trek fleet command

Species 6339 VOY: "Infinite Regress"

Seven: "Species 6339, Humanoid. Warp-capable. Origin: Grid 124, Octant 22 Theta. They first encountered the Borg approximately four years ago. Since that time, 11 billion individuals have been assimilated. Three days ago, the Collective detected one of their last surviving shuttlecraft. A cube was sent to intercept it." The shuttle was purposely infected with a virus that would spread through the Borg vinculum.

Species 6961 "Ktarians" VOY: "Dark Frontier"

Erin and Magnus Hansen examine a drone on the Raven. "Species 6961...Ktarian...Tritanium infrastructure. He's a tactical drone." Note that this alleged Ktarian looks neither like the TNG nor like the VOY Ktarians .

species 3259 star trek fleet command

Species 8472 VOY: "Scorpion", "Prey", "In the Flesh", etc.

Species 8472 is a non-humanoid species from a realm called "Fluidic Space", impervious to assimilation and to Borg weapons.

Species 10026 VOY: "Dark Frontier"

Seven is supposed to assist in the assimilation of a planet with 329,000 members of this species.

Borg species designations

  • View history

The Borg use a system of species designations to identify various races and cultures they have encountered.

It is not explicitly stated how these designations are assigned, though it is generally assumed that they are simply incremental, each newly encountered species getting a number one higher than the previous. This mostly holds up when comparing numbers to probable first contact dates or vicinity to Borg space, though some anomalies exist, most notably the Alpha Quadrant species Ferengi having an unusual low number of 180. Numbers appear to be assigned at first contact, and don't seem to be recycled even after the whole species is assimilated.

Borg Species Designations

For thousands of years the Borg spread throughout the galaxy, conquering, assimilating, and thus destroying countless civilizations. Following every encounter, the Borg catalogue each new species with a numerical designation, rather than a proper name. The goal of the Borg, in most cases, was to completely assimilate each species by incorporating their knowledge and technology into the unified Borg Collective. One by one, each living being was converted into Borg drones. In many cases, all that remained of an assimilated civilization was the memory of its unique contributions that resided only within the accumulated knowledge of the Borg. That, and the numerical species designation. Often even the name is lost, forgotten or deleted as irrelevant. Conversely, the species designations gave a sense of the long and terrible history of the Borg and the thousands of species they encountered and absorbed.

Species designation: 116 | 125 | 149 | 180 | 218 | 259 | 262 | 263 | 312 | 329 | 521 | 571 | 689 | 2461 | 3259 | 4228 | 5174 | 5618 | 6291 | 6339 | 6961 | 8472 | 10026

SPECIES 116

A technologically sophisticated humanoid civilization from the Delta Quadrant . Members of this species were gifted linguists, some knowing several thousand languages. The Borg spent several centuries trying to assimilate Species 116, but they were outwitted and eluded the Borg until 2374, when the Borg abducted all but about 20,000 individuals. Arturis was a member of Species 116 who had escaped assimilation but later was captured after his plans to lure the U.S.S. Voyager NCC-74656 to the Borg failed. [ 7 ]

SPECIES 125

The species the Borg Queen encountered by the Voyager in 2374 came from. No other information about this race was known. [ 10 ]

SPECIES 149

Civilization assimilated by the Borg that had advanced medical technology, including a method for reversing cellular necrosis, thus allowing the Borg to reactivate drones as much as 73 hours after “death.” This technique was used by Seven of Nine aboard the Voyager to revive Neelix . [ 4 ]

SPECIES 180: Ferengi

The Ferengi . It is not known why the Ferengi, an Alpha Quadrant race, has such a low species number, which would imply that they were encountered and catalogued very early in the Borg’s existence. [ 8 ]

SPECIES 218: Talaxians

The Talaxian race, of the Delta Quadrant; catalogued by the Borg when a small freighter containing a crew of 39 was taken in the Dolmine Sector. The Talaxians were easily assimilated, and their dense musculature made them excellent drones. [ 2 ]

SPECIES 259

Technologically advanced omnicordial lifeform that inhabited Galactic Cluster 3. This species developed the pattern-duplication design that was at the heart of the Borg autonomous regeneration sequencers. [ 3 ]

SPECIES 262

A primitive Delta Quadrant culture assimilated by the Borg around 2145. Their oral history referred to a powerful substance which could “burn the sky.” The Borg were intrigued, and they followed a trail of myth through several cultures until it learned about the Omega molecule . [ 6 ]

SPECIES 263

A primitive Delta Quadrant culture assimilated by the Borg around 2145. Species 263 believed the Omega molecule was a drop of blood from their creator. [ 6 ]

SPECIES 312

A Delta Quadrant civilization assimilated by the Borg several centuries before 2374. Species 312 developed tetrion-flux technology that could create an energy barrier undetectable by conventional sensors. Apparently this species had constructed such an energy barrier on the planet Ledos over the southern sub-continent in order to protect the primitive Ventu people from intrusion by the more advanced Ledosians. [ 18 ]

SPECIES 329: Kazon

The Kazon race, of the Delta Quadrant. The Borg encountered a Kazon colony in the Gand Sector, Grid 6920, but considered the race unworthy of assimilation because their biological and technological distinctiveness was unremarkable. [ 12 ]

SPECIES 521: Shivolians

The Shivolian race, of the Delta Quadrant. A female member of this species visited the Voyager while the ship was docked at a Markonian Outpost in 2375. [ 14 ]

SPECIES 571

A species that worshipped the supernatural deity Brothara, and frowned upon the desecration of dead bodies. P’Chan , whose Borg designation was Four of Nine, was from this species. [ 14 ]

SPECIES 689: Norcadians

The Norcadian race, of the Delta Quadrant. [ 15 ]

SPECIES 2461: Brunali

The Brunali race, of the Delta Quadrant. [ 15 ] The Brunali world was located near a Borg transwarp conduit and had been attacked three times in ten years; each time the Borg wiped out the society they had worked hard to rebuild. This race had developed sophisticated techniques in agricultural genetics which allowed them to grow crops in inhospitable environments, and they used the same science to engineer an anti-Borg pathogen that they implanted into the genetic code of some of their children, including Icheb . [ 16 ]

SPECIES 3259: Vulcans

The Vulcan race, of the Alpha Quadrant. The Vulcan’s enlarged neocortex produced superior analytical abilities. [ 2 ]

SPECIES 4228: Hazari

The Hazari race, of the Delta Quadrant. Technologically advanced, extremely violent, the Hazari made excellent tactical drones. Other races often hired them as bounty hunters. [ 11 ]

SPECIES 5174

A spacefaring Delta Quadrant civilization. The Borg once encountered a small ship of this species where the occupants were gutted in a complete osteomy, their entire skeletons surgically removed along with musculature, ligaments, tendons and internal organs. The Borg never determined the perpetrators, considering it irrelevant, but it was apparently the Hirogen . [ 5 ]

SPECIES 5618: Humans

The Human race, of the Alpha Quadrant. Considered by the Borg to possess below-average cranial capacity, minimal redundant systems and limited regenerative abilities. But several attempts to assimilate this species failed, provoking the Borg’s interest. [ 9 ]

SPECIES 5973

Gaseous lifeform native to Galactic Cluster 8. [ 17 ]

SPECIES 6291: Yridians

The Yridian race. The Borg had determined that the Yridians were extinct, as had the Federation , but exo-biologist Rudy Ransom made contact with the race, proving otherwise; Ransom was promoted to captain and given command of the U.S.S. Equinox NCC-72381 as a result of the accomplishment. [ 13 ]

SPECIES 6339

Warp -capable humanoid species that originated in Grid 124, Octant-22-theta. They first encountered the Borg c.2371, and in four years, 11 billion of their people were assimilated. In 2375, the Collective intercepted one of their last remaining shuttlecraft and assimilated the 13 people aboard. It turned out that those 13 individuals were sacrificing themselves, as they were carrying a synthetic pathogen that the race had developed to retaliate against the Borg. That virus was originally a biological agent but mutated and attacked the Borg Cube’s Vinculum as it would living cells, and through the Vinculum it was passed on to all drones on the Cube. The pathogen caused thousands of drones to randomly manifest hundreds of thousands of personalities, leading to chaos among the drones and, ultimately, the destruction of their Cube. [ 8 ]

SPECIES 6961: Ktarians

The Ktarian race, of the Alpha Quadrant. A drone originating from this species was studied close up on a Cube by Magnus Hansen . [ 9 ]

SPECIES 8472: Undine

The Undine [ 19 ] were a sophisticated lifeform from an extra-dimensional realm of fluidic space . Species 8472 has an extremely dense genetic structure and an extraordinarily powerful immune system; almost anything that penetrated their cells was instantly destroyed, including chemical, biological, or technological intruders. [ 1 ] In late 2373, the Borg discovered fluidic space and learned that Species 8472 possessed organic spacecraft and a biogenically-engineered weapons technology that was superior to anything known to the Borg. Seeking to assimilate this civilization and its technology, the Borg launched an attack on the fluidic space realm, only to be repelled by Species 8472. [ 2 ] Shortly thereafter, Species 8472 launched a retaliatory strike, sending hundreds of powerful bioships into the Delta Quadrant with the goal of eliminating all lifeforms from the galaxy, destroying entire planets and fleets in Borg-occupied space. The 8472 assault was halted when the Starship Voyager collaborated with the Borg to use new nanoprobe technology the crew had developed, a weapon against which the species had no effective defense. [ 1 ] It was in the midst of the 8472 battle that Seven of Nine came aboard Voyager and was later severed from the Collective. [ 2 ]

SPECIES 10026

A species from Grid 532 in the Delta Quadrant with a population of 392,000 that was assimilated in mid-2375. The Borg Queen tried to force Seven of Nine to help assimilate this race, but Seven instead arranged the escape of four individuals. [ 10 ]

The Vulcans , or Vulcanians , [1] were a warp-capable humanoid species from the planet Vulcan . They were widely renowned for their strict adherence to logic and reason as well as their remarkable stoicism.

In 2161 , their homeworld became a founding member of the United Federation of Planets . ( TOS : " Mudd's Women ", " Amok Time "; TNG : " Encounter at Farpoint ", " Data's Day ", " Gambit, Part II "; Star Trek: First Contact ; ENT : " Broken Bow ", " Zero Hour ", " Awakening ", " These Are the Voyages... ") Vulcans were known by the Borg as Species 3259 . ( VOY : " The Raven ")

History and politics [ ]

In 2154 , T'Pol stated that Vulcans had evolved on Vulcan. ( ENT : " The Forge ") Roughly a century later , however, Spock theorized that the Vulcans might be descendants of the Arretans . ( TOS : " Return to Tomorrow ") According to Narek , the myth of Ganmadan dated back to before the Romulan and Vulcan ancestors first arrived on Vulcan. ( PIC : " Et in Arcadia Ego, Part 2 ") In 2369 , evidence was discovered that several species including the Romulans , and therefore also the Vulcans, could be traced back to DNA that had been seeded on many planets by ancient humanoids 4.5 billion years ago . ( TNG : " The Chase ")

The Vulcans were once an extremely violent and emotional people (even by Earth standards) who waged almost constant warfare on one another. ( ENT : " Impulse ", " Awakening "; TOS : " Balance of Terror ", " Let That Be Your Last Battlefield "; VOY : " Random Thoughts "; SNW : " A Quality of Mercy ") Paranoia and homicidal rage were common. ( ENT : " Impulse ") They believed in a variety of gods , such as war, peace, and death . ( TNG : " Gambit, Part II ") As their level of technology increased, the Vulcans eventually reached a point where their violent nature threatened the extinction of their own species. ( ENT : " Awakening ")

Surak

Surak, father of Vulcan logic

In an effort to avoid this fate, a Vulcan named Surak developed a new philosophy , thereby igniting the Time of Awakening . Surak maintained that the root cause of all the problems on Vulcan lay in the uncontrolled outpouring of the people's emotions. His followers swore to live their lives by an ethical system devised by Surak and based purely on logical principles. Emotions were to be controlled and repressed. ( TAS : " Yesteryear ")

Although this new philosophy spread rapidly across Vulcan, a minority, many of whom were known as "those who march beneath the raptor 's wings ", rejected Surak's ideals. A destructive war began, including the use of atomic bombs , and among the victims was Surak himself. ( ENT : " The Forge ", " Awakening ")

Eventually, however, those who opposed logic left Vulcan and founded colonies elsewhere ( TNG : " Gambit, Part I ", " Gambit, Part II ") – most notably on the planet Romulus , where they founded what eventually became the Romulan Star Empire . ( TOS : " Balance of Terror ", " The Enterprise Incident "; TNG : " Unification I ", " Unification II ") At some point in history, the Romulans and the Vulcans engaged in a hundred-year-long war against one another. The war was instigated by the actions of a member of the Q Continuum . ( VOY : " Death Wish ")

Another group that rejected Surak's philosophy was known as the " V'tosh ka'tur ", or "Vulcans without logic". The V'tosh ka'tur believed in controlling emotions by allowing themselves to actively experience them rather than suppressing them. Some of these also left Vulcan, and took up a nomadic existence. ( ENT : " Fusion ") Many turned to crime, however, and subsequently sent for rehabilitation at facilities such as the Ankeshtan K'til Retreat . ( SNW : " Spock Amok ", " The Serene Squall ") A prime example of a V'tosh ka'tur was Sybok , who underwent failed rehabilitation at Ankeshtan K'Til for involvement in piracy before ultimately trying to use emotion rather than logic to find answers to the creation of the universe. ( SNW : " The Serene Squall "; Star Trek V: The Final Frontier )

Zefram Cochrane makes first contact

First contact with Humans in 2063

The Vulcans conducted a series of survey missions to the Sol system , as early as 1957 . ( ENT : " Carbon Creek ") Vulcans were, in fact, one of the first species to develop warp drive , though a century passed between the first warp flight and the breaking of the warp 2 barrier . ( ENT : " First Flight ") T'Pol told Archer that Vulcans "don't share" Humans ' "enthusiasm for space exploration," but a Syrrannite on Vulcan later advised Archer that this may not have been true. ( ENT : " Fight or Flight ", " The Forge ")

The official First Contact between Vulcans and Humans came on April 5 , 2063 , when a Vulcan survey ship , the T'Plana-Hath , detected the warp flight of Zefram Cochrane 's Phoenix . The Vulcans met with Cochrane at his launch site on the day following the flight. ( Star Trek: First Contact )

Subsequently, the Vulcans offered their technological guidance to Humans, but were criticized on Earth for holding back their development. ( ENT : " First Flight ", " Broken Bow ") A century after First Contact, the High Command had become worried about Humans, who, like Vulcans, had had devastating wars, but after which had rebuilt and started traveling to the stars much faster. There were those on the High Command who wondered what Humans would achieve in the century to come, and did not like the answer. ( ENT : " The Forge ")

By the mid- 22nd century , Vulcan culture had strayed from the path that Surak had originally laid out for them, to the point that Surak's katra did not recognize it as the culture he had helped to create. They had ceased being explorers and the High Command, once devoted to that goal, had instead become involved in a conflict with the neighboring Andorians . ( ENT : " Awakening ", " The Forge ")

The Vulcan High Command used an ancient monastery at P'Jem as a secret listening post to spy on the Andorians until June of 2151 , when the listening post was discovered by the Andorians and a landing party from Enterprise NX-01 . Later, the Humans helped negotiate a peace between the Vulcans and Andorians over a disputed class D planetoid known to the Vulcans as Paan Mokar . ( ENT : " The Forge ", " The Andorian Incident ", " Cease Fire ")

Vulcans also became less tolerant of political and philosophical challenges towards the High Command's operations, notably engaging in purges of the Syrrannite group, who claimed that Vulcan society was no longer following the teachings of Surak. These tensions came to a head in a crisis called the Vulcan Reformation , which resulted in the overthrow of the High Command (and its leader, V'Las , who was secretly allied with the Romulans), as well as a restructuring of the Vulcan government including the dissolution of the High Command. T'Pau became a minister in this government. A less aggressive policy towards Earth was also adopted. ( ENT : " The Forge ", " Awakening ", " Kir'Shara ", " United ")

By the 21st and 22nd centuries, the Vulcans had also made contact with the Cardassians , Trill , Tholians , Klingons (as early as 2016 ), and scores of other races. ( DS9 : " Destiny "; ENT : " Broken Bow ", " Future Tense ")

As of the 23rd century , Vulcan had never been conquered in its collective memory. That memory went so far back that Vulcans could not conceive of a conqueror. ( TOS : " The Immunity Syndrome ")

By the 24th century , Vulcan remained one of the principal Federation members, and was deeply involved at all levels of that society. Vulcans were present in the Federation colonies found within the Demilitarized Zone established between the United Federation of Planets and the Cardassian Union by the terms of the Federation-Cardassian Treaty of 2370 ; they were among the colonists' representatives during discussions with the Cardassians concerning terrorist attacks by the anti-Cardassian Maquis movement established in the Zone. At least one Vulcan, Sakonna , acted as a gun runner and interrogator for the Maquis and made use of her people's ability to mind meld in the latter role. ( DS9 : " The Maquis, Part I ", " The Maquis, Part II ")

The Vulcans' tradition of exploration continued; in the 24th century, a Vulcan ship was the first to make formal contact with a Gamma Quadrant civilization, upon encountering the Wadi . ( DS9 : " Move Along Home ") The Vulcans were at the forefront of exploration in the Gamma Quadrant, encountering the Rakhari and finding the remains of the Hur'q civilization. ( DS9 : " Vortex ", " The Sword of Kahless ") In the 24th century, the Vulcan ministry of security was known as the V'Shar . ( TNG : " Gambit, Part II ")

By 2369, the Vulcans had a saying known to the Federation: " We're here to serve. " ( DS9 : " Captive Pursuit ")

Despite the enmity between the Federation and the Romulan Star Empire, some Vulcans attempted to forge a more cordial relationship with their cousins, ultimately hoping to reunify the two cultures. Many of these efforts met with little success. ( TNG : " Unification I ", " Unification II ")

Mirror universe [ ]

History turned out much differently for the Vulcans of the mirror universe . When the Vulcans made first contact with Earth of this universe in 2063, Zefram Cochrane shot the first Vulcan to publicly set foot on Terran soil, believing his vessel to be the vanguard of an intended invasion. The Terrans stormed the T'Plana-Hath and studied Vulcan technology. Eventually, the Vulcans were conquered by the Terran Empire . ( ENT : " In a Mirror, Darkly "; DIS : " Die Trying ")

By the 2150s , Vulcans were considered slaves to Terrans and not treated as equals. Vulcans later participated in a rebellion against the Empire in the 2250s . By 2267 , the half-Vulcan Spock had become first officer of a starship and eventually rose to the top of the Terran Empire itself. After the Empire was conquered by the Klingon-Cardassian Alliance , Vulcans served as slaves to the Klingon-Cardassian Alliance. Using fans, several of them cooled the Intendant aboard Terok Nor . ( ENT : " In a Mirror, Darkly, Part II "; TOS : " Mirror, Mirror "; DS9 : " Crossover ")

Some Vulcans, such as Tuvok , joined the Terran Rebellion . ( DS9 : " Through the Looking Glass ")

Alternate reality [ ]

In the alternate reality , the planet Vulcan was destroyed by a Romulan named Nero in 2258 . Over six billion Vulcans were killed, with an estimated ten thousand survivors. After witnessing the atrocity, Spock noted in his log that the Vulcan species had become endangered . ( Star Trek ) Spock's prime reality counterpart founded a colony for the survivors, which, by the following year, had been settled and named New Vulcan . ( Star Trek Into Darkness )

Physiology [ ]

Vulcan DNA schematic

Scan of a Vulcan's DNA

Species which shared some physiological and behavioral traits with Vulcans were categorized as Proto-Vulcan humanoids . One example of this were the Mintakans . ( TNG : " Who Watches The Watchers ") In addition, Rigelian physiology was very similar to that of Vulcans. ( TOS : " Journey to Babel ")

Vulcans were generally similar to Humans in appearance, distinguished mainly by their pointed ears and upswept eyebrows. Their skin color was most commonly pale with a bronze or greenish tint, though some had brown skin. Vulcan physiognomy could resemble Humans of European , Asian , or African descent. ( Star Trek: The Original Series ; Star Trek III: The Search for Spock ; Star Trek: Voyager )

Most Vulcans had straight, glossy black hair , though brown and/or curly hair was also possible. Vulcans had body hair similar to Humans, and some males could be very hirsute. Vulcan males were capable of growing facial hair , but most chose to shave it. ( TOS : " Mirror, Mirror ", " Patterns of Force "; Star Trek V: The Final Frontier ; VOY : " Year of Hell "; ENT : " In a Mirror, Darkly, Part II "; Star Trek )

Vulcan teeth included anterior tricuspids , which could be protected from decay for decades by sealing them with a trifluorinate compound . ( ENT : " Dear Doctor ")

In contrast to their external similarities, Vulcan internal anatomy differed radically from that of Humans. For instance, their heart was where a Human's liver would normally be, ( TOS : " Mudd's Women ", " A Private Little War ", " The Omega Glory "; Star Trek Beyond ) and beat several hundred times per minute. ( TOS : " The Naked Time ", " Journey to Babel ") Vulcans also had no appendix . ( TOS : " Operation -- Annihilate! ") They did, however, have mitochondria . ( TNG : " Data's Day ")

Vulcan cut and bruise

A greenish bruise

Vulcan blood was copper -based and was copper- or rust-colored when deoxygenated in the veins and green when oxygenated, in the arteries, or when bleeding. Bruises and dermal abrasions took on a greenish color. ( TOS : " The Naked Time ", " Obsession ", " Patterns of Force "; DS9 : " Field of Fire "; VOY : " Repression "; ENT : " Shadows of P'Jem ", " In a Mirror, Darkly, Part II ")

Vulcan body chemistry used little, if any, sodium chloride compared to that of Humans. ( TOS : " The Man Trap ")

Vulcans possessed a highly efficient respiratory system to extract the oxygen they needed from Vulcan's thin atmosphere . They were most comfortable in high temperatures. A Vulcan of advanced age could become more sensitive to lower temperatures. ( TOS : " The Deadly Years "; ENT : " The Forge ")

The Vulcan digestive tract was highly adaptable. Although alien foods , notably Human food, would occasionally disagree with a Vulcan, given time, their body could adapt to the alien food. ( ENT : " Unexpected ")

Vulcan hearing was very sensitive. ( TOS : " Return to Tomorrow ", " The Way to Eden "; ENT : " Singularity ") Vulcan females possessed a heightened sense of smell . ( ENT : " Broken Bow ", " The Andorian Incident ")

Having evolved on a planet which was mostly desert , Vulcans developed ways of surviving in desert conditions. For example, they could survive for several days without water and had inner eyelids which protected their eyes . ( TOS : " Operation -- Annihilate! "; ENT : " Strange New World ", " The Forge ")

Vulcans had a superior metabolism to Humans. Caffeine and sapotoxins had little effect on them. ( ENT : " Breaking the Ice ") They were also capable of surviving for long durations without food or sleep. Under stress, Vulcans could do without sleep for weeks. ( TOS : " The Paradise Syndrome ") Tuvok once claimed that, as a Vulcan, he was capable of going without sleep for two weeks, although, shortly after making this claim, he fell asleep in the command chair after having gone a little over ten days without sleep. ( VOY : " Muse ")

Vulcans were, on average, three times physically stronger than Humans, and had considerably faster reflexes. ( DS9 : " Take Me Out to the Holosuite ")

Vulcans were very sensitive to nitrous oxide gas , which rapidly rendered them unconscious. ( TAS : " The Practical Joker ")

Vulcans typically had a lifespan of two hundred years or more. Their aging was correspondingly slower; a Vulcan of age 65 had the appearance of a 20th century human in their late 20s, and was considered in their "quarter-life". ( ENT : " Broken Bow ", " Zero Hour "; TNG : " Sarek "; LD : " Empathological Fallacies ")

Perhaps the most interesting aspect of the Vulcan physiology was the brain . The Vulcan brain was described by The Doctor as " a puzzle , wrapped inside an enigma , housed inside a cranium . " ( VOY : " Riddles ") Indeed, The Doctor has also noted how " the Vulcan brain never ceases to amaze me. " ( VOY : " Blood Fever ")

A Vulcan's brain was in direct control of most of the bodily functions, acting as a control unit for many organs. Despite this, a Vulcan body from which the brain had been removed was capable of functioning and even walking around (albeit in a zombie-like state) with a portable life support system. ( TOS : " Spock's Brain ")

Unlike most humanoid species, traumatic memories were not only psychologically disturbing to Vulcans, but had physical consequences as well. The Vulcan brain, in reordering neural pathways, could literally lobotomize itself. ( VOY : " Flashback ")

Vulcans learned to gain conscious control of many of these functions, allowing them to regulate their bodies to a high degree by simple will-power. When injured, a Vulcan could go into a trance-like state, using this ability to concentrate all of his or her energy on repairing the injury. ( TOS : " A Private Little War ") However, Vulcans did have certain levels of pain they were unable to suppress, forcing them to endure the experience. ( VOY : " Resistance ")

This trance could be self-induced and gave the physical appearance of near-death. It was similar, in principle, to Vulcan neuro-pressure techniques which could be used to relax the mind and body. ( TOS : " By Any Other Name "; VOY : " Riddles "; ENT : " The Xindi ")

The substance trellium-D acted as a neurotoxin to Vulcans, destroying the neural pathways which controlled their emotions. Treatment had to be provided quickly after exposure; otherwise, the damage was irreversible. ( ENT : " Impulse ")

The most famous aspect of the Vulcan brain were the inherent telepathic abilities, such as the mind meld . Vulcans were natural touch-telepaths. Though considerable training was required to utilize this ability to the fullest (like performing the fal-tor-pan ), simpler contacts did not require any concentration, training, or even conscious knowledge of the act. ( VOY : " Blood Fever ")

Vulcans called focal points in the bioelectric field of the brain qui'lari . ( DS9 : " The Muse ")

Stronger minds were capable of non-contact telepathic projection and scanning, usually over short distances, ( TOS : " The Devil in the Dark ", " The Omega Glory "; VOY : " Random Thoughts ", " Prey ") but sometimes even over interstellar distances. ( TOS : " The Immunity Syndrome "; Star Trek: The Motion Picture ; DIS : " Lethe " )

Another psionic ability of the Vulcan race was the telepathic suggestion or compulsion, consciously performed by Spock, ( TOS : " Dagger of the Mind ", " A Taste of Armageddon ", " The Omega Glory ") Sybok , ( Star Trek V: The Final Frontier ) Tuvok, ( VOY : " Repression ") and T'Pol, ( ENT : " In a Mirror, Darkly ") and unconsciously performed by Sarek. ( TNG : " Sarek ")

Although Vulcans did not, typically, allow themselves to experience uncontrolled strong emotions, they could sense them in others. ( ENT : " Fallen Hero ")

Vulcans were capable of performing a synaptic pattern displacement , or the transfer of one individual's consciousness into another. ( Star Trek III: The Search for Spock ; DS9 : " The Passenger ")

The psycho-suppression system responsible for the Vulcan suppression of emotions was located in the mesiofrontal cortex . ( VOY : " Meld ")

Approximately every seven years, adult Vulcans had to endure pon farr , the Vulcan mating period. It was marked by intense emotions and primal urges (known as plak tow , or "blood fever") that could kill the Vulcan if not satisfied. Physiological symptoms included elevated dopamine levels and fever . For such an orderly society of quiet sobriety, the madness which accompanied the outbreak of pon farr was an unavoidable evil. ( ENT : " Bounty ", " In a Mirror, Darkly "; TOS : " Amok Time "; VOY : " Blood Fever ")

Medical conditions [ ]

There were several diseases from which the Vulcan species suffered, including:

  • Pa'nar Syndrome
  • Tuvan Syndrome
  • Bendii Syndrome
  • Choriocytosis

Hybridization [ ]

Vulcans and Humans could not reproduce without medical intervention according to 2150s medical knowledge. ( ENT : " E² ", " Demons ", " Terra Prime ")

In 2155, Terra Prime extremists created a binary clone from T'Pol and Trip Tucker . The child, whom they called Elizabeth , had many genetic flaws due to the method of her creation and she died. ( ENT : " Demons ", " Terra Prime ")

In 2230, Spock was born on Vulcan to Sarek and Amanda Grayson . ( ENT : " Terra Prime "; TOS : " Journey to Babel ", " The Squire of Gothos "; Star Trek Beyond )

The Vulcan heritage in Vulcan-Human hybrids was dominant, with copper-based blood, pointed ears, and the full range of Vulcan abilities.

Vulcan scripts

Six different Vulcan scripts

Vulcans were generally non-violent, but logic dictated that combat was sometimes necessary. Vulcans could and did use weapons and practiced martial arts called tal-shaya and Suus Mahna . ( TOS : " Journey to Babel "; ENT : " Marauders "; DIS : " Context Is for Kings ")

Vulcans considered death to be the completion of a journey. Therefore, they did not fear it happening; however, the loss of one's katra was to be avoided if possible, since the katra lived on beyond the physical death. ( Star Trek III: The Search for Spock ) They also practiced euthanasia for the infirm and elderly, and saw nothing wrong with practicing ritual suicide when they reached a certain infirmity with age. ( VOY : " Death Wish ") As they knew death was an inevitability, they believed that fear of death was ultimately illogical. ( Star Trek Beyond )

The government on Vulcan was a representative democracy . Individual political advancement was based on meritocratic principles. ( ENT : " Awakening ")

Although Vulcans were highly integrated into the Federation, in the 23rd century, some Vulcans viewed service in Starfleet to be less prestigious than attending the Vulcan Science Academy , ( TOS : " Journey to Babel ") though in the twilight years of that century, this apparently became much less of an issue. ( VOY : " Flashback ") Furthermore, among all the Federation members whose people served in Starfleet, Vulcans were the only ones to be accommodated with starships crewed entirely by their own species, such as the USS Intrepid and the USS T'Kumbra . ( TOS : " The Immunity Syndrome "; DS9 : " Take Me Out to the Holosuite ")

Vulcans played a game known as kal-toh . ( VOY : " Alter Ego ", " The Omega Directive ", " Endgame ")

Vulcans had a traditional funeral dirge . ( VOY : " Tuvix ")

Vulcans occasionally gave gifts . However, Vulcan custom did not include receiving a gift back from a recipient. ( Star Trek Beyond )

Vulcans possessed family names , although they were pronounceable by Humans only after many years of practice. ( TOS : " This Side Of Paradise ", " Journey to Babel ")

Many Vulcan females had names beginning with "T'" and particularly "T'P" ( T'Pol , T'Pring , T'Pau , T'Mir , T'Pel, T'Pan), but not all ( Valeris , Sakonna , Saavik , Selar ); many males had names beginning with "S" ( Spock , Sarek , Sybok , Surak , Stonn , Soval ); again, though, there was variation ( Tuvok , Lojal , Vorik , Taurik , Koss ).

Education [ ]

Naturally, the development of a Vulcan's lifelong devotion towards logic was encouraged at a very early age. Vulcan parents utilized careful and gentle methods to train their infants in primary logic. ( VOY : " Human Error ") Vulcan children learned, by example, how to detach themselves from their emotions as well, and it often aided in difficult childhood situations. ( ENT : " Fusion ", " Home "; TAS : " Yesteryear "; VOY : " Innocence ", " Gravity ") Despite logic being paramount in education, Vulcan children were allowed much freedom as well, and enjoyed a number of passions their controlled states allowed them to coordinate.

As parents, Vulcans never restricted their children from real life. Doing so only hindered their ability to develop their own identity. A Vulcan parent's attachment to their children could not be described as an emotion. They were part of the parent's identity and the parent was incomplete without them. ( VOY : " Innocence ")

Children at Vulcan nursery schools danced. ( TOS : " Whom Gods Destroy ")

When they were older, they learned in skill domes . The Vulcan Learning Center employed these. ( Star Trek , DIS : " The Vulcan Hello ", " Battle at the Binary Stars ")

A Vulcan program suitable for young children which taught basic problem solving skills was available at Deep Space 9 's school in 2370 . ( DS9 : " Whispers ")

The Vulcan Science Academy and Vulcan Medical Institute were two notable post-secondary institutions.

Logic and emotions [ ]

Contrary to stereotype, Vulcans possess strong emotions. They use meditation as a way to suppress those emotions. For instance, emotions like remorse, relief, joy, and embarrassment were all displayed by Spock when he thought Captain Kirk was dead and then saw him alive. ( TOS : " Amok Time "). Indeed, Vulcan emotions were far more intense, violent, and passionate than those of many other species, including even Humans. ( TNG : " Sarek ")

It was this passionate, explosive emotionality that Vulcans blamed for the vicious cycle of wars which nearly devastated their planet. As such, they focused their mental energies on mastering them. The essence of their logical society was in arriving at the truth through logical process. Emotions were illogical, thus making them impure, and deterrent to truth. Vulcans were born with the same emotions that afflicted their violent ancestors, but continual mental conditioning generally gave them the impassivity they sought. ( TAS : " Yesteryear ")

Though not all could arrive at the ultimate pure logical state, the exacting process of mental control gave Vulcans enough to conform to the ideals of Vulcan society. The ultimate level of logical thought was achieved through the attainment of kolinahr , which was said to purge them of all remaining emotions. ( Star Trek: The Motion Picture )

Attitudes to deception [ ]

Vulcans were renowned for their honesty, and indeed it has been claimed that "Vulcans could not lie ." However, they would do so for what they perceived as logical reasons, though they rarely referred to their dishonesty as "lying." ( TOS : " The Enterprise Incident "; Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan ; Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country ) For instance, an elder denied the existence of technology and spies at the monastery at P'Jem in order to protect an ongoing surveillance operation. ( ENT : " The Andorian Incident "). Also, T'Pol's second foremother directly lied to another Vulcan, telling the commander of a rescue party that her crewmate had died in a crash, so that he could remain on Earth to "study" Humanity. ( ENT : " Carbon Creek ")

In 2259 of the alternate reality, Spock managed to deceive Khan Noonien Singh into transporting armed torpedoes aboard the USS Vengeance , as Khan believed they still carried members of his crew . Khan wasn't aware that Spock had anticipated his betrayal and removed Khan's crew from the torpedoes with the intent to detonate them and cripple the Vengeance . When Khan stated that he'd know if they weren't his, Spock assured him that " Vulcans do not lie " and that " the torpedoes were his ". This demonstrated that Vulcans, while still technically telling the truth, didn't always necessarily tell the entire truth if it was to their advantage. ( Star Trek Into Darkness )

Tuvok at one point stated, when responding to Seven of Nine questioning him as to whether Vulcans were capable of lying " we are capable of telling lies. However, I have never found it prudent or necessary to do so. " ( VOY : " Hunters ")

Spirituality [ ]

The Vulcans held a number of spiritual beliefs. Their religious system was polytheistic . They also believed in the katra , the soul and consciousness of a person, which could be transferred psionically prior to death. ( TAS : " Yesteryear "; Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan ; Star Trek III: The Search for Spock ; TNG : " Gambit, Part I "; ENT : " The Forge ", " Awakening ")

Meditation was a central component of Vulcan life. The Vulcan Sh'vhal type ship of the late 24th century was known to feature a dedicated meditation chamber that the crew could use alone or in small groups. ( LD : " wej Duj ")

What little is known about Vulcan religious beliefs indicates that, beginning prior to the "Time of the Awakening", they were polytheistic. Surak 's teachings became the primary focus of Vulcan spirituality/mysticism, but, as late as the 23rd century, it was still not unheard of to find Vulcans honoring the traditional gods. There were, however, no demons in Vulcan literature. ( TAS : " Yesteryear "; TNG : " Gambit, Part I "; VOY : " Heroes and Demons ")

Romantic relationships [ ]

Vulcan marriage ceremony

Vulcan wedding ceremony

Vulcan arena

Vulcan ceremonial wedding grounds, circa 2260s

When Vulcan children came of age, having sometimes been betrothed to childhood companions by age seven, underwent the pon farr , the link compelled them to follow through with full marital rituals, which cemented their relationship. ( TOS : " Amok Time "; ENT : " Breaking the Ice ")

It was traditional for the female to propose marriage by presenting a necklace to the male. She may signal her intention to do so by wearing ritual mating colors on an auspicious date, such as the anniversary of a first courtship event . ( SNW : " Strange New Worlds ")

If, for whatever reason, the female did not wish to go through with the marriage, then the ceremony of koon-ut-kal-if-fee ("marriage or challenge") was invoked. The male fought for the right to keep his mate against a challenger of her choosing. The female became the property of the male who won the contest, unless he chose to release her. The koon-ut-kal-if-fee was a fight to the death. ( TOS : " Amok Time ")

As of 2266 , hearsay held that Vulcan men treated their women strangely. ( TOS : " The Naked Time ")

According to Spock, it was "undignified for a woman to play servant to a man that is not hers" as his reason for throwing food (from Nurse Chapel) against the wall. ( TOS : " Amok Time ") Yet, a century earlier, T'Pol brought Jonathan Archer food and blankets in sickbay, and in an alternate timeline, tended to him as a nursemaid ( ENT : " A Night in Sickbay ", " Twilight ").

Spock's wedding2

Vulcan wedding ceremony, ca 2260s

Touching each other with both the middle- and the forefinger was a custom practiced by married couples and was part of the Vulcan marriage ceremony. ( TOS : " Journey to Babel "; VOY : " Bliss "; ENT : " Home ") It could also help to calm down male Vulcans during pon farr . ( Star Trek III: The Search for Spock )

Food and drink [ ]

Although not always, most Vulcans were primarily vegetarians . They also did not touch food with their hands unless wearing special gloves. ( ENT : " Broken Bow ", " Home ") The v'tosh ka'tur were a major exception, however. ( ENT : " Fusion ")

Vulcans were fermenting wines , notably Vulcan port , during the 21st century. ( DS9 : " The Maquis, Part I ")

Guests in a Vulcan household were expected to rise before sunrise to prepare the morning meal. ( ENT : " Home ") Plomeek broth was considered a traditional Vulcan breakfast. ( ENT : " Unexpected ")

Background information [ ]

The Vulcans were the first alien species created for Star Trek by Gene Roddenberry . ( " The Andorian Incident ", text commentary , ENT Season 1 DVD special feature )

^  The term "Vulcanian" has been described as an " Obsolete term meaning a native of the planet Vulcan. The term 'Vulcan' has come to mean both the planet and the native of same. " ( Star Trek Concordance , p. 248) The origin of the term from a production standpoint dates to 1966 , when NBC prepared a twelve-page booklet, entitled "Advance Information on 1966- 67 Programming: Star Trek ", which described the series' regular crewmembers. The description of Spock mentions that his father was a native of "Vulcanis," and his people were known as the "Vulcanians". ( The Star Trek Compendium , p. 25) As a result of early "growing pains" in the writing staff, the term "Vulcanian" was used sporadically (and sometimes interchangeably) during the first season , where it was heard in " Mudd's Women ", " Court Martial ", " A Taste of Armageddon ", " This Side of Paradise ", and " Errand of Mercy ". The Bajorans suffered similar "growing pains" when they were briefly known as the "Bajora" during their early appearances. The name "Vulcan" itself, in reference to the people, was first heard in " The Naked Time ". See also: Vulcanian expedition and Vulcanian Scientific Legion of Honor .

In notes that Costume Designer Robert Fletcher wrote about the various aliens in the film Star Trek: The Motion Picture , he included a description of the Vulcans. After pointing out the Vulcans were "from tv series", the brief continued as follows:

" Observed in the movie as Mr. Spock, others among crew, and the Masters on Vulcan planet scene. Unemotional, scientific people, their culture based on cold logic, reason and control. One of the Federation's most advanced races [....] Vulcans are mostly tall, slender, beautiful people, with strong sense of honor. Physically distinguished by upswept eyebrows and pointed ears. Their green blood is copper-based. "

Fletcher also imagined that, because their homeworld was rich in jade, the Vulcans made extensive use of that substance, such as with ruby jewellery and a red-colored giant statue is visible on the planet's surface, in the film. ( The Making of Star Trek: The Motion Picture , p. 133)

The depiction of Vulcans developed with the introduction of Tuvok on Star Trek: Voyager , as he was the first black Vulcan main character. In developing the character of Tuvok, the series' creators tried to put a new spin on the long-established alien species. However, Executive Producer and series co-creator Jeri Taylor later stated, " Subsequently I have learned we were not the first. In the third feature there was a black Vulcan priestess, so it was clearly established there were different colors of people on Vulcan. " (Taylor's statement is not entirely true, as the black Vulcan priestess was actually in the fifth Star Trek film, Star Trek V: The Final Frontier .) When he was cast as Tuvok, actor Tim Russ was an expert on Vulcans, and, in fact, his expertise of portraying a member of the species got him the part. ( Cinefantastique , Vol. 27, No. 4/5, pp. 59 & 60) " People are always asking me how there could even be a black Vulcan, " said Russ, shortly after the start of VOY Season 1 . " If Vulcans are humanoids and other humanoids were the species they most often encountered, then logic would follow that because of genetic mutation and random selection, you're going to have different colors and different variations of the species at one time. So, Tuvok is a black Vulcan. " ( The Official Star Trek: Voyager Magazine  issue 2 , p. 20)

In a story idea that the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine writers had that eventually became the two-parter " Homefront " and " Paradise Lost ", the Vulcans were to withdraw from the Federation. The cause of this schism was to be their concern that the Federation was becoming too concerned with the Changeling infiltration at the cost of civil liberties. Starfleet was to assume incorrectly that the Founders had infiltrated Vulcan society. ( Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Companion  (p. ? ))

In developing the Vulcans for Star Trek: Enterprise , Brannon Braga noted " one of our goals with this series was to make the Vulcans interesting again. I think they've been taken for granted... I think the Vulcans in this era are very complicated and paradoxical and make good antagonists. " ( Star Trek: The Magazine  Volume 3, Issue 2 , p. 10) Regarding the depiction of crazed Vulcan crewmembers of the starship Seleya in ENT : " Impulse ", Braga once remarked, " I loved the idea of Vulcan zombies. " ( Star Trek: Communicator  issue 151 , p. 29)

In the unproduced animated series Star Trek: Final Frontier , set in the far future, the Vulcans left the Federation at some point in the 25th century to discuss reunification with the Romulans.

In an ultimately unused line of dialogue from the script of Star Trek , Spock explained, " 'Cthia' is the stricture that binds our emotions... but few of us are that perfectly Vulcan. " [4]

For Star Trek Into Darkness , Vulcan ear prosthetics, in encapsulated silicone, were created by makeup artist David Snyder . A few changes were made to the Vulcan ears when compared to those from the previous film , Star Trek , on which Snyder had also worked. David LeRoy Anderson , the Makeup Department Head for Into Darkness , explained, " Our modifications were strictly mechanical, based on Dave's desire to make the application a little easier. Dave did a clay press of the existing sculpt and remodeled the ears to help mass-produce the pieces, and that gave us great edges. " The ears were applied by Snyder, using a cotton swab, and (at least in the case of Zachary Quinto as Spock ) a tiny amount of acetone. ( Cinefex , No. 134, p. 77)

Apocrypha [ ]

According to Star Fleet Medical Reference Manual (published in 1977 by "Star Fleet Productions, Inc."):

  • Males height = 2.0 meters (6'6")
  • Males weight = 70 kilograms (154.3 lbs)
  • Females height = 1.7 meters (5'6")
  • Females weight = 50 kilograms (110.2 lbs)
  • Body temperature = 32.78 °C (91 °F)
  • Heart rate = 242 bpm
  • Blood pressure = 80/40

Vulcan blood vessels are more dilated than those of Humans. The larger blood vessels are the reason Vulcan blood pressure is lower. The dilated blood vessels and fast heart rate also play a key role in regulating Vulcan body temperature. A standard 91 °F body temperature is maintained by the internal cooling mechanism of fast blood circulation. ( Star Fleet Medical Reference Manual )

Vulcans do not have sweat glands, and cannot rely on evaporation as a means of cooling their bodies in the harsh heat of their planet's desert climate. Expelling heat through radiation is insufficient. Vulcans evolved an internal cooling mechanism. With an average body temperature of 91 °F, the high blood flow circulates cool blood throughout their body. ( Star Fleet Medical Reference Manual ) This systematic means of cooling gives credence to McCoy's comment "that green ice water you call blood." ( TOS : " The Paradise Syndrome ")

While " Little Green Men " implies that Vulcans were not warp-capable until at least 1947, in the novel Prime Directive they already possessed such technology in 1908: a Vulcan survey ship was responsible for the mysterious Tunguska event , redirecting a large meteor about to hit Western Europe – where it would have killed millions and done irreparable damage to Human civilization – so that it instead impacted in an area so remote that no Human deaths were recorded.

USS Voyager

species 3259 star trek fleet command

A legend on par with the USS Enterprise, the USS Voyager embodies the phrase “Where no man has gone before.” Shortly after its launch, the USS Voyager was cast over 70,000 light years away from home into the Delta Quadrant, unwillingly becoming the first Federation vessel to successfully traverse the Delta Quadrant and make numerous first contacts. During its seven-year journey, this ship became more than a research vessel - it became a home for its diverse and skilled crew. Apart from the emotional value, the USS Voyager is one of the most technologically advanced ships in the Federation fleet, including the upgraded sensor equipment and the capability of reaching a cruise velocity of warp factor 9.975, making it one of the most suitable ships for the exploration of the Galaxy.

Embark on a thrilling adventure, collect Artifacts, and uncover the hidden wonders of the Delta Quadrant by building the USS Voyager. Let your journey unfold as you delve into uncharted territories and rise as a legendary explorer.

How can you add the USS Voyager to your fleet?

To acquire blueprints for the USS Voyager, you need to reach Operations Level 30 and defeat Hirogen hostiles in the Delta Quadrant. Collect Hirogen Relics as spoils of victory, and refine them in the Voyager refinery. Once you reach Operations Level 34 and have gathered all the blueprints, you can build the USS Voyager.

The USS Voyager enables you to acquire Isolytic damage Artifacts and ship parts for various vessels, including the Cerritos, Amalgam, G4 ships, and more.

Advanced Sensors (active) uncover hidden hostiles in the Delta Quadrant, such as the elusive Species 8472. This state has a cost, Deuterium Canister, duration, and cooldown.

Astometrics Scan (active) scans a player's ship and reveals the location of their station. This state has a cost, Deuterium Canister, duration, and cooldown.

Deuterium Canister can be found after refining Hirogen Relics in the USS Voyager Refinery. Hirogen Relics can be found in the Delta Quadrant systems on Hirogen Hostiles.

How to upgrade it?

To upgrade the USS Voyager, you need to refine Exotic Biotoxins and Anomaly Samples . These valuable materials need to be refined in the Voyager refinery, harnessing their true power to enhance the starship's capabilities.

Exotic Biotoxins can be acquired from Species 8472 Bioships in the Velixys system, while Anomaly samples can be mined from systems such as FSEP-505, FSEP-3819, FSEP-247, and FSEP-001.

Important note : Species 8472 Bioships are elusive and can only be spotted while using Advanced Sensors.

USS Voyager research nodes will further enhance not only the ship itself but also provide fleetwide buffs. From the Below Deck Assembly (unlocks Below Deck slots in officer presets), to the Artifact Hunting Extraordinaire (adds a bonus roll of Artifact rewards in the common and rare Anomaly Sample refinery), Dismantle Tinkering (increases base scrapping speed for all ships), and Ship Maintenance Efficiency (increases the base cost efficiency for repairing all ships); these nodes are an invaluable addition to your buffs.

M54 – Now, Voyager

Carnac | May 9, 2023 May 9, 2023 | Events

The year was 1995. It had been two years since a Star Trek series starring a former Benson regular debuted on television. It was also the first time in almost thirty years that a Star Trek series showed up on a network TV lineup, launching the new United Paramount Network on January 16th.

To refresh your memory, it was competing in the Monday at 8 pm timeslot with Coach, The Nanny, Melrose Place, and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. For those of you under 30, shows used to air at specific times during the week. Maybe you could tape them to watch later, but half the time that didn’t work.

And now I feel like Gilbert Gottfried doing his old Groucho Marx impression .

Like TNG, and DS9 before it, it got off to a bit of a rocky start. The Kazon are still the most annoying Trek villains to me of the franchise, and Ceska just never worked for me. But they later found their footing, established their characters, and got people to not hate Neelix as much as they did at the start. For me, it never reached the pinnacle that DS9 reached, but the last few seasons were strong.

So here we are, 28+ years later, and now Voyager has come to Star Trek Fleet Command. And we’ve got the Delta Quadrant, the EMH, and B’Elanna Torres in the game, for starters. We’ve got a new building, and a whole new Armada system (that builds on a whole old Armada system.)

Maybe it’s just because I’m crazy tired from work and running around after my kids this month, but I’m kinda looking forward to exploring the Delta Quadrant. It’s always fun to explore.

More is coming. Probably a ship. Janeway and Tuvox, and a Seven of Nine article that will top the Carol Marcus article for the number of clicks that exactly related to game-strategy. Somehow we’re going to get Neelix in the game, though I can’t even begin to imagine how he’s going to work.

And you know there’s a Tuvix reference coming in the game.

And without comment, I’ll leave this here. If you know, you know.

New Building – The Artifact Gallery

species 3259 star trek fleet command

So another arc set, and another new building. To be fair, the last few (the Armory, Mess Hall, and Command Center) have all been really useful, without costing any gas, ore, or crystal, so they’ve all been wins.

This new one, the artifact hall that you’ll be able to construct starting at level 26 will allow you to collect and upgrade artifacts. (Yes, upgrading an artifact seems like an odd concept to me, sort of like finding a chariot from ancient Egypt and upgrading it with a cd-player. But that’s as may be.)

The building itself, (located on the far left of your base) gives you nice bonuses to your hull health and shield health. It also gives you a bonus to your “Artifact Tokens.”

You’ll unlock the building and your first artifact from the Artifact Gallery Intro Missions. And the good news is that you can get these missions for free. Yes, there will be options to spend money on this feature in the near future.

The artifacts will give you various permanent buffs. Think of these like researches, or like Bajoran Favors. The word on the street is that these buffs will make a noticeable difference.

In order to unlock these artifact buffs, you’ll need to collect artifact shards, which you’ll create from artifact tokens. There will be two types of artifact tokens: standard and premium.

You’ll get tokens by defeating formation armadas. And speaking of those…

Formation Armadas

species 3259 star trek fleet command

After adding solo armadas, and then Borg solo armadas, now we go the other way. Formation armadas.

These will involve the simultaneous destruction of three connected armadas. Each of the sub-armadas (that look like Species 8472 bioships ) can have up to four players, for 12 players in total. Now you will get an armada chest for defeating one node of the Formation Armada, but you’ll won’t get any artifact materials unless you defeat all three.

Probably the most groundbreaking thing is that you’ll be able to complete these armadas with players from other alliances. Each node can only have players from one alliance, but other alliances could complete the other two nodes.

Like the Artifact Gallery, you’ll need to be ops level 26 or above to participate in these. It’s also not dependent on your Armada Control Center. The lowest available Formation Armadas will be level 30, but level 26 players should be able to defeat these (and reach them) if they work together. In total, there will be six different levels of uncommon Formation Armadas to start with.

You’ll launch these with new Formation Armada Directives, and you’ll get some of these for free each day through daily goals.

Each node will need to be launched with its own directives. So Armada A, Armada B, and Armada C will all need to be launched. They’ll operate on 15-minute synchronized timers, so the timer will start when the first armada is launched. The second and third timers will then sync up to the first.

You cannot start a formation armada if one of the nodes is damaged or missing. You’ll have to wait for them to respawn, and this time frame should be shorter than deep-space armadas, but longer than solos. But that’s as precise as I’ve been told. They are supposed to be a bit harder than normal FKR Armadas.

The last thing you’ll probably be asking yourself is “Where does a body find these newfangled Formation Armadas?”

Fair question.

Since it’s the Voyager Arc, you’ll find them in the Delta Quadrant, of course.

Delta Quadrant Space

Sorry Dean Wormer, but there is delta here.

About the Delta Quadrant. The vast section of space that was the setting for Star Trek Voyager is also the setting for the game this month.

There are two points of entry for the Delta Quadrant. One will be at the bottom of your screen after you restart your game (after updating your client in the app store.) This one is called the Border of the Alpha Quadrant and is accessible for players level 26+.

species 3259 star trek fleet command

The second will be found in the top of your screen, above Federation Space and is for players level 34+. This one is called the “Depths of the Delta Quadrant.” Now you’re searching for the USS Voyager as it continues its journey home. (Not it’s Voyage Home, that’s got whales.)

The Delta Quadrant will contain new systems, in addition to “lost hostiles” pulled there by the caretaker. You’ll also come across Hirogen Hunters, who’ll have inflated loot and power, and should be harder to kill than other ships of their level.

It’s also where you’ll find “planetary missions.”

Two New Officers. One of them is Holographic. The other is not.

species 3259 star trek fleet command

And with a Voyager Arc, we’ve got the first two Voyager officers, B’Elannah Torres, and the Doctor. Both of them have below-deck abilities, (so no Emergency Command Hologram here.)

He’s an epic science officer, whose officer ability will increase your armor, shield deflection and dodge for two rounds every time your ship takes damage from a non-armada hostile. His below-deck ability increases the resources gained from hostiles.

She’s a rare engineering officer, whose officer ability is also hostile-based. When you take damage, she the opposite of the Doctor, increasing your offensive stats (armor piercing, shield piercing and accuracy), though only for one round each time.

Her below-deck ability is also something new. She can trigger a hull breach on hostiles for one round, so you can pair her with your hull-breach crews. Not quite sure how big an impact this will really make yet, but it’s different. It’s the first below-deck ability to trigger hull-breach, burning or morale. Granted it’s only for hostiles, but it’s noteworthy.

There are lots of missions this month, focusing on the Voyager Storyline. You’ll have 10 core missions for players 34+, 10 “Planetary” side missions, and the three Artifact Gallery Side Missions.

And this month, SNW Part 1 missions come to the Holodeck.

Other things to look out for this month

  • Species 8472’s Energy beam. Always looked cool on Voyager, and gives you a 20% piercing buff against all armadas. It’s currently only available for purchase.
  • There are also three new prime nodes, prime ex-borg credit efficiency, defiant cost efficiency, and prime interceptor wrecking. The last of the three will give you a 300% damage buff when fighting other player’s interceptors.
  • For those of you into avatars, we’ve got the Doctor, B’Elanna, a Hirogen Hunder Ship, Delta Flyer, and Species 8472 Ship. The new frames are Species 8472, Warp Core, and Artifact Hall.
  • New hailing frequencies are an old-time pocket watch and a choosy Doctor.
