The Best Watches in Tom Cruise’s Watch Collection From Screen to Red Carpet

Tom Cruise Top Gun Porsche Design Chronograph 1

In researching this article about Tom Cruise’s watch collection, one thing became abundantly clear to me. There is no human being on this planet that commands as much attention. Whether its his latest movie outing like Top Gun Maverick, an appearance at an awards show or some other type of engagement, people want to know what he’s up to. Which means there are a lot of pictures of Cruise out there. What’s particularly amazing is that in the vast majority of them, he’s wearing a different watch – the sheer range and diversity of the timepieces is impressive. He’s no Paul Newman with a diehard attachment to a single model. With that in mind, here are some of the best watches in Tom Cruise’s collection and what he has been spotted with.

Of course, while he does own many watches, some of the pieces he’s most associated with are those that appear on his wrist in the Hollywood blockbusters he’s adored for. From several Mission Impossible outings to Oscar nominated Vanilla Sky, to guilty pleasures like Cocktail, there are a million and one Tom Cruise watches to be spotted – we couldn’t leave them out.

Porsche Design Chronograph 1

Tom Cruise Top Gun Porsche Design Chronograph 1

We’ve got to start with the watch that helped launch Cruise’s career, the Porsche Design Chronograph 1 from the Top Gun franchise. The original 1986 film is an absolute classic of high octane action and the sequel, made 36 years later, was undoubtedly the best film of 2022. In an insane (and awesome) piece of watch continuity, in both films Cruise wears the exact same Chronograph 1 with its PVD case and ultra-legible display. Admittedly, Cruise is only a temporary custodian of the watch as it actually belongs to the films’ producer, Jerry Bruckheimer.

Rolex Air-King

Tom Cruise Rolex Air King

Keeping with the theme of watches worn on the big screen, in 1988’s Cocktail Cruise can be seen wearing an incredibly lovely Rolex Air-King with silver dial. If you’re unfamiliar with the film, it’s probably best to keep it that way, it’s not one of Cruise’s best – you can read our full thoughts on the Raspberry winning movie here . However, if you can get past the plot, the Rolex Air-King is truly lovely, especially when you consider that in the 80s the name Rolex was a fair bit more prestigious than it is today.

IWC Mark XV

Vanilla Sky (2001) IWC Pilot’s Watch Mark XV

From Tom Cruise’s worst film to his trippiest: 2001’s Vanilla Sky . The Oscar nominated film revolves around concepts about life, existence and art, which makes the inclusion of an IWC Mark XV pilot watch pretty jarring. The Mark XV is a watch grounded in functionality and purity of design with a military style display in black and white and a 38mm stainless steel case. It’s a watch at odds with the high-falutin concepts of the film, which somehow makes its presence all the more impactful. It’s not the only IWC he sports in a film either, as he wears the Ingenieur automatic in 2004’s Collateral.

Cartier Santos de Cartier

Cartier Santos de Cartier

This one is a given considering the number of red carpets Tom Cruise has walked in his lifetime. Cartier are renowned for being the most popular brand among actors for premiers, awards shows and more. However, while we often think of the Cartier Tank, Cruise opts for its larger, sportier cousin the Santos de Cartier. With its bold, square design and thick bezel, it combines the best of the Sports Luxe aesthetic with Cartier’s traditional attention to detail and Art Deco styling. The silver dial option at the medium sizing as worn by Cruise is particularly nice.

Vacheron Constantin Overseas Perpetual Calendar Ultra-Thin

Vacheron Constantin Overseas Perpetual Calendar Ultra Thin

So far, while each of the watches we’ve had a look at are each unique and distinct, they’ve all had something in common – a tendency towards functionality and sportiness. The Vacheron Constantin Overseas Perpetual Calendar Ultra-Thin that Cruise wore to last year’s Cannes Film Festival is the first piece of major haute horology we’re taking a look at. It has a 41.5mm white gold case with a rich blue dial featuring hours, minutes, day, date, months, moonphase and leap years, all powered by the Calibre 1120 QP/1, which won’t need adjusting until the year 2100, if kept wound.

Rolex Daytona Ref. 1166500LN

Tom Cruise Rolex Daytona Ref. 1166500LN

One of the most famous watches in his collection is the Rolex Daytona Ref. 1166500LN. You know the one. With its 40mm Oystersteel case, a black cerachrom bezel and a white dial featuring black subdial accents – not quite a panda display, but not far from it either – it’s one of the most sought-after Rolexes to have been released in the last decade. Perhaps Tom Cruise isn’t so different to Paul Newman as we first posited.

Bremont ALT1-C

Tom Cruise Bremont ALT1 C

Proving that his love of watches expands beyond the big names of Swiss watchmaking, Cruise has also been clocked sporting watches from brands that aren’t quite so well known outside of watch circles. Case in point he has a Bremont ALT1-C, an aviation chronograph from a British brand specialising in pilot’s watches. It has a 43mm diameter case in stainless steel and houses the Calibre 13 1/4”’ BE-50AE automatic (base ETA 7750), which has a 42-hour power reserve.

At a price of just £5,295 compared to some of the £100,000+ watches in his collection, it shows that Tom Cruise’s interest in watches is genuine and goes beyond the pieces with the biggest clout.

Panerai Luminor Marina PAM00299

Tom Cruise Panerai Luminor Marina PAM00299

Panerais have a reputation for being particularly large, making them a favourite of larger men who live up to its size. Cruise proves that this isn’t always the case because despite being on the shorter side, the Luminor Marina looks perfectly at home on his wrist. It’s also interesting because the Panerai is one of the few dive watches in his collection, evidently, he prefers tool watches designed for the skies rather than the seas.

And the Rest of Them

Tom Cruise Rolex Rain Man

While on screen Tom Cruise is as much of an action hero as he always has been, he’s actually 60 years old, meaning he’s been in the industry for a long, long time. There are simply too many films, red carpets and photoshoots to cover every single watch he’s worn across a well-lived life.

Some stand outs include a Cartier Calibre de Cartier Chronograph, a Tudor Heritage Chronograph (Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol), a Graham Chronodiver Chronograph, as well as a half-dozen more Rolexes like the GMT Master II, Sky-Dweller, Datejust and the Day-Date (Rain Man). And there are still more I could mention like the Jacob & Co. Epic II Chronograph, Tag Heuer S/EL Quartz Chrono (Jerry Maguire) or Casio G-Shock W-5300 (Mission Impossible).

Quite the collection. I am surprised there wasn’t any mention of his many Breitling pieces. The Sky-Dweller is probably my favorite piece out of all the ones mentioned here along with the IWC.

Mission: Impossible 6-Movie Collection (4K UHD + Blu-ray + Digital)

Table of Contents

Started as a Classic TV Series, Now a Box-Office Movie Franchise

The Mission Impossible franchise didn’t start as a big-budget action movie – it was first a popular TV series. The first Mission Impossible TV series ran from 1966 to 1973 and the second one ran from 1988 to 1990. The first movie was released in 1996 and, except for including the character of Jim Phelps (the MIF leader in the television series), was a complete overhaul from its TV counterpart. However, the iconic Mission Impossible theme, the lighted fuse intro, and self-destructing messages were kept intact.

Only One Character from the TV Series Made it to the Big Screen

The character of Jim Phelps, played by Peter Graves in the series and was re-casted to Jon Voight in the movie, is the only original character to appear in both the television and movie adaptation. However, the portrayal of the character differs greatly in both adaptations. While Jim Phelps was the honorable leader of the MIF in the TV series, the movie version painted him as a more malevolent and manipulative light who turned out to be the main antagonist of the first film.

Tom Cruise did the Majority of His Stunts

For an A-list actor, you would think that Tom Cruise would leave the dangerous action scenes to his stunt double – well, you would be wrong. For most of the big action-packed sequences in the Mission Impossible film series, Tom Cruise decided to do it himself. From scaling the highest building in the world, the Burj Khalifa, to hanging from outside an airplane as it is taking off – Tom Cruise did those stunts himself. You can imagine the absolute anxiety that the director might have been feeling during those scenes as the last thing you’d want is for your lead actor to go splat.

For a character like Ethan Hunt who utilizes a slew of high-tech gadgets at his disposal, you would expect him to have a collection of modern and multi-functional timepieces to help accomplish his missions. We will be going through each of the six installments of the Mission Impossible film franchise and see what type of watch Tom Cruise wore for each entry.

Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol (2011) – Tudor Heritage Chronograph

Tudor Heritage Chronograph Automatic Black Dial Men's Watch M70330N-0005

In the fourth installment of the spy-action film series, Ethan Hunt can be seen wearing a Tudor Heritage Chronograph timepiece instead of a Casio watch. As the plot of the film heavily involves infiltrating a dangerous criminal organization, it is logical for Ethan Hunt to also wear a more luxurious yet equally reliable timepiece to complete the façade that the character was going for. As for the timepiece itself, the Tudor Heritage Chronograph brings a certain level of sophistication with its aesthetics. Case in point, the ribose-style grey hour markers, and striking black dial. The Tudor Heritage also features an automatic movement with an analog dial display. It comes with a 42mm stainless steel case with a bi-directional rotating bezel and a water resistance of up to 150-meters.

Notable Watches Worn by Other Characters in Mission Impossible Ghost Protocol

Tom Cruise wasn’t the only one wearing a well-known watch brand in Ghost Protocol. Benji Dunn (Simon Pegg) and William Brandt (Jeremy Renner) are also seen wearing a  Casio G-Shock GX-56-1B  and a  Rolex Submariner Date  respectively during certain scenes in the movie. Again, the wristwear choice reflects both characters with Benji leaning towards the more modern and multi-functional watch (Casio) and the CIA operative, Brandt, having a more professional and classier timepiece (Rolex).

Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation (2015) – Tissot T-Touch Expert Solar (T091.420.44.051.00)

Tissot Men's T0134204420100 T-Touch Expert Titanium Watch

Mission Impossible: Fallout (2018) – CWC GS Sonar Watch

tom cruise cocktail wrist watch

The latest entry into the Mission Impossible series, Fallout, gives Ethan Hunt a more rugged and traditional timepiece in the form of the CWC (Cabot Watch Company) GS Sonar Watch. In a Mission Impossible movie that might have the most exhilarating ‘race against time’ scene in the franchise, the CWC GS Sonar Watch is the perfect companion for our intrepid special agent operative. The CWC GS Sonar features a 38mm satin-matte stainless-steel case and is equipped with an ETA 955.102 quartz movement with an analog dial display. Simple, classy, and tough – the CWC GS Sonar is an excellent outdoor timepiece for when hiking, camping, or saving the world from mass destruction.

Tom Cruise’s incredible watch collection often sneaks into his movies

Tom Cruise's watch collection, featured image

Tom Cruise is known for his impressive on-screen stunts and the fact that he still looks 38 despite being weeks away from his 61st birthday.

Mind you, there’s something else Cruise doesn’t get enough recognition for: his watch collection.

From de rigueur Rolex best-sellers to the famous Top Gun watch, there are some proper gems here.

Let’s have a look at Tom Cruise’s watch collection.

5. Tudor Heritage Chrono from Mission Impossible – $4,500

Ethan Hunt is set to return to screen for one final mission in the upcoming movie Dead Reckoning, a two-part finale to the Mission: Impossible saga.

Tom Cruise will of course reprise his role as Hunt, along with Ving Rhames (Luther) and Simon Pegg (Benji Dunn).

We don’t know what kind of watch Hunt will be wearing in the new film, but there’s one timepiece from the other Mission: Impossible movies that stands out.

Tom Cruise's watch collection, Tudor Heritage Chrono

It’s the Tudor Heritage Chrono, a modern chronograph designed to give off vintage-y vibes.

Cruise / Hunt wore this watch in the 2011 film Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol.

The watch isn’t cheap, but perhaps less expensive than you think, it’ll ‘only’ set you back $4,500.

4. IWC Mark XV from Vanilla Sky – $6,000

Tom Cruise's watch collection, Tom Cruise's IWC in Vanilla Sky

Tom Cruise plays a careless, carefree and callous womanizer in the 2001 psychological thriller Vanilla Sky.

However, his character’s life goes upside down when a car crash nearly kills him.

In the film, Cruise’s character David Aames wears an IWC Mark XV and drives a vintage Ford Mustang.

Tom Cruise's watch collection, Tom Cruise's IWC in Vanilla Sky

What do these things have in common? They’re both more expensive than you might think.

This IWC timepiece was pricey then, and it’s pricey now, with a market value north of $6,000.

3. Omega SeaMaster Chronograph from War of Worlds – $7,000

In the 2005 film War of Worlds, Tom Cruise plays Ray Ferrier, a divorced crane operator with two children that don’t really like him.

However, Ray goes from deadbeat dad to hero when Earth is invaded by tripod-shaped aliens.

Needless to say, Ray saves the day, and his family, and they lived happily ever after.

Tom Cruise's watch collection, War of Worlds

The film was a box office success and it features a cool and yet somehow underrated watch.

Some of us may be familiar with the Omega Seamaster, but not this model.

In the film, Ray / Tom Cruise wears a vintage cal 321 Seamaster Chronograph, which was relatively inexpensive back then.

Mind you, Cruise couldn’t get away with wearing this exact watch if he played a similar role today because the Seamaster 321 is worth around $5,000 – $6,000 today.

Not really a crane operator watch, is it?

2. Gold Rolex Day-Date from Rain Main – $8,500

Tom Cruise watch collection, Rolex Day-Date from Rain Man

Tom Cruise starred alongside Dustin Hoffman and Valeria Golino in the 1988 Oscar-winning movie Rain Man.

In the film, Cruise’s character Charlie Babbitt is a well-off LA yuppie and he wears a watch that perfectly matches his character’s personality.

Tom Cruise watch collection, Rolex Day-Date in Rain Man

The watch in question is a gold Rolex Day-Date which, as you can probably imagine, costs a pretty penny.

Prices vary significantly depending on size and model year but, generally speaking, you can’t find one for under $8,500.

1. Orfina Porsche Design from Top Gun – $9,650

Tom Cruise watch collection, Cruise and Kilmer in Top Gun

This is by far and away the most famous watch ever worn by Tom Cruise in one of his movie.

The 60-year-old actor gave this watch icon status after wearing it in the 1986 film Top Gun.

Made by Porsche Design in partnership with Swiss watchmaker Orfina, this military-style chronograph became synonymous with the Top Gun saga.

Tom Cruise's watch collection, Porsche Design from Top Gun

The price reflects that.

The watch is quite rare and difficult to find, and if you want a period-correct Orfina Porsche Design in good condition, be prepared to spend at least $6,000-$6,500.

But hold on because this conversation is about to become even more expensive.

Porsche released a limited-edition reissue that Tom Cruise wore in the 2022 sequel Top Gun: Maverick.

This one is priced at $7,700.

tom cruise cocktail wrist watch

The bad news is it is no longer available and collectors aren’t selling theirs.

So your only option is to buy the Porsche Design Chronograph 1.

It looks exactly the same except for the hour markers, but it costs even more money.

This one will set you back $9,650 .

The Casio Watches Worn by Tom Cruise in Mission Impossible

casio watches in mission impossible

If you buy through links on our site, we may earn an affiliate commission. Details

As the frontman and action hero in all the movies, Tom Cruise is synonymous with Mission Impossible. And he seems to want to always make another one!

And who can blame him, it looks like a lot of fun, especially when you come to realize he does all his own stunts – and even broke his foot jumping between buildings in Mission Impossible 6 in London a few years ago!

And if you pay close attention during the action-packed series of the Mission Impossible franchise, you may notice that in many of the first movies Tom Cruise wore a few different Casio watches.

It is not always easy to tell which ones, but with a little investigation, I have collected all the Casio G-Shocks that Tom Cruise wore in Mission Impossible below.

Casio G-Shock MTG-910D in Mission Impossible III (2006)

Tom Cruise wearing a Casio G-Shock in Mission Impossible 3

The Casio G-Shock MTG-910D is a rare beast indeed. It is almost impossible to find on eBay , Amazon, or any other watch site. So, if you can find this elusive Mi3 Casio watch, grab it, and fast!

In many ways, it is not the most spectacular of Casio G-Shocks, but given it is meant to be worn by Ethan Hunt as he throws himself from one death-defying situation to another, that is not a surprise.

It comes with 200m water resistance and shock resistance, as we all expect from G-Shock. It also has Tough Solar because Tom has no time to swap batteries. And Wave Receptor tech to synchronize the time no matter what time zone he is in!

Casio G-Shock DW-6900 in Mission Impossible 2 (2000)

Tom Cruise wearing a Casio G-Shock in Mission Impossible 2

The Casio G-Shock DW6900-1V is a classic that has been around for over 25 years. So, it is nice to see it featured on the wrist of Tom Cruise in Mission Impossible 2. It is certainly a watch that can withstand a lot and has sold well all around the globe.

There are no frills on this watch, apart from a few colored pieces of text on the otherwise all-black Casio. It has 200m water resistance and shock resistance and all the standard digital bells and whistles you know and love.

But nothing more. No Tough Solar, no Atomic timekeeping, and no Triple Sensor. However, if you are like me, they are unnecessary in daily life anyway!

Here are the specs:

  • Japanese Quartz
  • Shock Resistant
  • EL Backlight with Afterglow
  • Flash Alert Flashes with buzzer that sounds for alarms, hourly time signal, countdown timer time-up alarm
  • 1/100 second stopwatch Measuring capacity: 00’00”00-59’59”99 (for the first 60 minutes) 1:00’00-23:59’59 (after 60 minutes) Measuring unit: 1/100 second (for the first 60 minutes) 1 second (after 60 minutes)
  • Measuring mode: Elapsed time, split time, 1st-2nd place times
  • Hourly signal, vibrating alert
  • 200m water resistance
  • 45 x 15mm case

Casio G-Shock DW-290-1V in Mission Impossible (1996)

mission impossible 1 tom cruise casio watch

This is quite a uniquely shaped watch from Casio that is rare just in terms of style. However, despite its fame from the original Mission Impossible (and the former director of the FBI), it is still available on Amazon !

Like all of the Casio G-Shocks in this list, it has everything you would expect, and nothing more. Shock Resistance, 200m water resistance, and the usual suspects of digital features – alarm, stopwatch, etc.

But for me, it is the triangular corners on each side that are the killer feature. It is just so Casio, without being anything like any other G-Shock. And weighing in at under $50, it is a bargain to boot!

Here are the specs (and the manual ):

  • Mineral crystal
  • Stopwatch (elapsed time, split time, 1st-2nd place times), Countdown timer
  • Hourly time signal; calendar (until the year 2029);
  • 12 and 24-hour formats
  • 200m water resistance & shock resistance
  • 45 x 14mm case

The best of Tom Cruise’s on-screen watches

Let’s take a look at the list of luxury timepieces adorning Tom Cruise’s wrist throughout his filmography.

tom cruise cocktail wrist watch

T he name Tom Cruise is no stranger to blockbuster movies—Top Gun, Mission Impossible, Jack Reacher. But aside from film triumphs, Tom Cruise is also known for his profound admiration for luxury timepieces. Whether it’s on-screen or off-screen , the actor has been frequently photographed donning exquisite watches worth hundreds of thousands.

From Top Gun’s Porsche Chronograph 1 to Mission Impossible’s Tudor Heritage Chrono, here are the most luxurious watches worn by Tom Cruise throughout 40 years of his entertainment career.

Top Gun, Porsche Design Chronograph 1

tom cruise cocktail wrist watch

In the famous Top Gun movie which hit theatres in 1986, Cruise played the young LT Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell. The movie, which holds the distinction of being one of the most widely viewed films in Hollywood history—saw Cruise wearing the black Porsche Design Chronograph, designed by Ferdinand Alexander Porsche and manufactured by Swiss watch brand, Orfina.

Fun fact: The iconic luxury watch made a comeback when Tom Cruise reprised his role in 2023’s Top Gun: Maverick . — Porsche .

Rain Man, Rolex President Day-Date

Rain Man , a film from 1988, tells the story of an extremely passionate car salesman. Throughout the movie, Cruise’s character prominently wears the impeccable Rolex President Day-Date in Yellow Gold which featured fluted bezel design and Cyclops lens window at 3 o’clock. There’s even a significant scene where he tries to pawn the watch, so you’ll get to see the luxury piece up close. — Rolex .

Cocktail Cruise, Rolex Air-King

In 1988, Cruise starred in another movie called Cocktail Cruise , where he portrayed a young student who became a bartender. Unfortunately, this film turned out to be Tom Cruise’s biggest box office failure. Nevertheless, it is interesting to mention the presence of the luxurious Rolex Air-King watch with a silver dial in the movie. — Rolex .

Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol, Tudor Heritage Chrono

In Ghost Protocol , the Tudor Heritage Chrono watch with a grey dial stood out among the many luxury timepieces featured in Mission Impossible. This particular watch, released the year before, gained attention for its distinctive dial design, which was inspired by the 1970s version of kaleidoscopic “Monte-Carlo” dials found in Tudor chronographs. — Tudor .

Mission Impossible: Fallout, Cartier Calibre Chronograph

tom cruise cocktail wrist watch

Another significant watch that is worth mentioning in Mission Impossible is the Cartier Calibre Chronograph, worn by Tom Cruise in 2018’s Mission Impossible: Fallout . This watch then stayed around his wrist throughout the movie tour afterwards. The watch is famous for its stainless steel, silver dial model, and the balance of sporty and luxury of the Cartier brand. — Cartier .

If you have a good sense of humor, like to laugh at Hollywood, and want to see some actually very impressive special effects (not to mention makeup) go see the movie Tropic Thunder. While it contains some controversial joking around (people will find issue with almost anything these days), it has a great cast, and some very good acting. Honestly, this is an excellent role for Jack Black. Seriously, see the movie and tell me that Jack Black doesn’t play his character very well. Not to mention Robert Downey Junior and of course Tom Cruise.

Speaking of Cruise, his character in the movie is Les Grossman. A satire (and reality) of certain Hollywood execs and Tom Cruise himself, who is as many know, in addition to being an actor, is also a Hollywood exec as co-owner of United Artists Pictures. You can read elsewhere about the ridiculous amount of makeup and body padding (and massive amounts of faux body hair) he wears, but the most noticeable part of his wardrobe is the large Panerai watch on his wrist. Cruise is not the largest man, and the PAM on his wrist looks enormous (it is 44mm wide which is big but not huge), and pretty bad-ass to be honest. Certainly a watch fit for the role. Like Sylvester Stallone, I would guess that this Panerai is from Tom’s personal collection as opposed to being furnished by Panerai. Mainly because if I have correctly spotted the model, it is no longer being made and Tom Cruise is a known watch lover often with other large watches such as an IWC.

In Tropic Thunder, Cruise wears what is obviously a Panerai, but not a typical model. It is the Panerai PAM 63 GMT Luminor. It is one of the few Panerai watches I know that lacks a subdial, as most (but not all) Panerai models typically place at least the seconds hand in a subdial. This particular PAM 63 GMT has a jet black face (obsidian shiny with a gentle horizontal line texture) a highly polished steel case. The dial has a good deal of markings on it, which might be considered cluttered in Panerai terms, as the standard look of Panerai faces is spartan to say the least. The GMT hand has a dedicated set of numerals around the out dial from 1 to 24. I really like this, as it adds to the legibility of the GMT function, but the smaller size of the GMT arrow ensures it does not get into the way. You also have a date window with an upside down magnifier lens, and a large seconds hands. The hour hands are in Panerai’s modern style with only the tips and edges visible, a really nice technical look. As the Luminor name attests, the superluminova applied all over the watch is thick and bright when it needs to be. In the movie, Cruise wears one with a glossy polished black leather or possibly crocodile (more often with a glossy finish) strap, but the watch can sometimes be found with a brown strap or steel bracelet.

Porsche Design Chronograph 1 - Tom Cruise - Top Gun

Tom Cruise wears a Porsche Design Chronograph 1 in the movie Top Gun.

Tom Cruise wears a  Porsche Design Chronograph 1  watch in the movie  Top Gun (1986) and he wears the watch once again in Top Gun: Maverick (2022).

In this article we will show you the EXACT model that Tom Cruise wears in the first Top Gun film.

The Porsche Design Chronograph 1 was the first watch with a black PVD coating, originally launched in 1972 this was a revolutionary watch. Designed by Ferdinand Porsche (designer of the Porsche 911), the watch was produced by Orfina.

There are variations of the watch, with different inner bezels and with Orfina logo and versions with "PD" (Porsche Design) logo.

The close up image on the left shows the exact variation of the Porsche Design Chronograph 1 worn by Tom Cruise: it's the reference number 7750, with on top of the bezel the "60" - "1 MILE" and the PD logo.

As can be seen in the film and the close-up images, the black PVD coating has worn off Tom's watch in the first Top Gun film. In the new Top Gun: Maverick film, the black PVD coating on the strap look immaculate, either from a restoration or by using a different watch.

An original Porsche Design Chronograph 1 in good condition can fetch close to $10,000.

Alternatives

If you're looking for an affordable alternative you could consider the Dan Henry 1972 Maverick model which is a very good replica of the watch, although on eBay even those watches can fetch around $800 .

Another copy of the Porsche is the Lorsa Valjoux 7750, which also still costs $699 on eBay .

A different looking black chronograph is for example the Bulova 98A186 on Amazon for $520 .

In Top Gun: Maverick , we can also spot a lot of IWC watches. IWC provides watches to the real Top Gun school and offers a range of Top Gun branded watches.

Some guys have it all. The tier-one Hollywood career, the cars, the homes, the watches, and someone they love to share it all with. And then there’s Tom Cruise who, after Shakira reportedly rebuffed his advances, just has everything else, including this gorgeous Rolex Daytona with a meteorite dial.

LONDON ENGLAND JUNE 14 Tom Cruise seen leaving Dolby Screening Room London Soho on June 14 2023 in London England.

The Rolex Daytona stays in the news. Just last weekend, two pieces that belonged to Paul Newman each sold for over a million dollars . On Monday, the Crown announced a special-edition of the piece in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the 24 Hours of Le Mans race . Cruise’s edition is pretty special in its own right. While nearly every version of the Daytona flies off the shelf now, trying to find this one at retail would truly be an… impossible mission. (Sorry.)

This version of the grail watch is outfitted with a dial made of meteorite—as in legit space rock. Rolex sources its extraterrestrial junk from the Gibeon meteorite, which crashed in Namibia in prehistoric times. Now, that slice of meteor is elevating one of the hottest watches in the world. This baby retails for $34,050. Not a bad trajectory for a rock, which was once hurtling through space and now gets to spend its life on the wrist of a real star. (I have a sickness.)

In my opinion, this is the best of the three meteorite-dial Daytonas that were released in 2021. The silvery meteorite and black subdials makes it feel like a space-age version of the beloved white-and-black “Panda” dial.

It was a good week for championship parades, which means it was a good week for watches. Breitling is best known for its purpose-built pilot watches, but the brand also knows how to go big design-wise. (Its salmon-dial B25 Datora is a personal favorite .) In 1943, the founder’s grandson, Willy Breitling, introduced a luxury collection called Breitling Premier. This watch debuted last year as part of a tribute to the founding of that upscale line. The three models in the collection are each named for a Breitling family member. Manchester City striker Haaland’s piece, with its platinum case and navy blue dial, is named after Willy.

DENVER CO JUNE 15 Ish Smith of the Denver Nuggets runs the streets like a wild man on fire during the team's...

The coolest watch at the Denver Nuggets championship parade? No doubt this G-Shock made in collaboration with Supreme and North Face. About three years ago, Supreme began bulking up its watch offerings with limited-edition pieces from Jacob & Co . I’ve always considered that the moment that streetwear culture and watches merged onto parallel paths. It was also the moment that watches became such a big deal that they could no longer be ignored by the buzziest brands in the world. This snow-white G-Shock comes with the ultimate hype signifier (in certain parts of lower Manhattan) across the band: the red Supreme box logo. Hat tip to Nick Gould for the spot.

HOLLYWOOD CALIFORNIA JUNE 14 Mads Mikkelsen attends the Los Angeles Premiere of LucasFilms' Indiana Jones and the Dial...

The Alpine Eagle is Chopard’s entry in the world of sport watches and it really leans into that persona here. This version of the AE comes on a rubber strap and is equipped with a chronograph, presumably for timing Mikkelsen’s daring escapes from crumbling caves in the new Indiana Jones movie. Who’s to say this isn’t the real Dial of Destiny ?

Brady has been flexing the full breadth of his watch collection lately. He whipped out this rare Day-Date with an “Arabic” dial for the French Open. Read all about it here.

Tom Cruise wore his original Top Gun watch in Top Gun: Maverick

“I have a need,” Tom Cruise's Pete “Maverick” Mitchell said in Top Gun : “A need for speed!” And how else would he measure his miles clocked per minute without the mechanical precision of his trusty Porsche Design Chronograph 1?

Top Gun: Maverick boasts a bunch of relics and loving holdovers from its predecessor: every sixth scene is a flashback sequence, shows off an old prop, or pointedly frames an old photo of Mav and Val Kilmer's Iceman on the wall. Those of us with a Navy aviator's 20/20 vision might've noticed one particular Easter egg — Mav's trusty timepiece from the original, said Chronograph. While the rest of the airmen in the sequel wear IWC accoutrements from the brand's dedicated Top Gun line, the Cold War-era Porsche remains tightly wrapped around Mav's wrist.

It's not just some random Chronograph the prop department sourced from eBay, no no. According to Cruise himself, this was the OG — only in the thirty-six year interim between Top Gun premiering and its sequel being birthed, producer Jerry Bruckheimer had appropriated it as his own private piece, so he lent it back to the 59-year-old.

“The watch I wear is the original watch,” Cruise confirmed to BBC Radio 1 at the end of May. “So I had to go, ‘Jerry, I need the watch for the movie.’ The second I was done shooting — that day — he [took it back]." Ah, the privileges of being one of the biggest blockbuster ship-steerers in the biz.

If you want a modern reinterpretation of the Chronograph 1, you can pre-order one at Porsche Design's website — but it'll set you back a hefty wad (read: £7,900). Maybe you're better off spending the rest of your days working to become a super producer, wriggling your way into the good graces of one Thomas Cruise Mapother IV (yeah, that's his real name) — he might just give you his watch…
