Safari Team Asks for Feedback Amid Accusations That 'Safari Is the Worst, It's the New IE'

Apple's Safari and WebKit team has asked for feedback on Twitter amid criticisms of the browser's bugs and missing support.

Also counterproductive, pointing to bugs from several years ago, complaining about them over & over & over. Let’s talk about current bugs. Currently missing or partial support for new features. Simmons also urged users who notice bugs that are "several years old and not fixed" to contact her with a link from bugs.webkit.org or a Feedback number from Apple's Feedback Assistant so it can be looked into more closely. The call for feedback has largely been received positively.

Safari has been met with complaints from some users in recent years over the browser's bugs, user experience, and website compatibility. The problems reached fever pitch last year when Apple unveiled a substantial redesign for Safari at WWDC, which was met with widespread criticism that accused the changes of being "counterintuitive." After months of tweaking the ambitious redesign in response to feedback, Apple eventually gave up on the changes just before the public release of iOS 15, iPadOS 15, and macOS Monterey, reverting to the previous Safari design by default.

Apple has also been criticized for demanding apps that browse the web to use the WebKit framework and WebKit Javascript on iOS and iPadOS, a policy that effectively bans non-WebKit based browsers. This has caught the attention of regulatory agencies, including the UK's Competition and Markets Authority (CMA), which said that "due to the WebKit restriction, Apple makes decisions on whether to support features not only for its own browser, but for all browsers on iOS." A previous tweet from Simmons appears to suggest the importance of maintaining the WebKit restriction.

Following consultation with developers, the CMA is considering forcing Apple to reverse the ban on non-WebKit based browsers to allow for more competition. It is unclear if Apple's latest push for feedback is related to the growing regulatory pressures around Safari.

Belts which appear to “jump” is often caused by sprockets which are not aligned, correctly. If the number of “teeth” on the sprockets is a number which IS NOT divisible by 4 (i.e. 6, 10, etc.) the sprockets must be aligned on the shaft. There is a small hole on each sprocket which must be in the same position on each sprocket. When properly aligned, you can “see” through the hole down the full length of the shaft.

Microsoft Teams support coming for Safari browser on macOS and iPad

Reference Teams client support

Since launch Teams has supported IE, Edge, Chrome and Firefox. Mac users had to use the full client or a third party browser and iPad users had to install the client. There is a user voice asking for native Safari

Now Microsoft have confirmed in a recent Education blog post that Safari support is coming. No details of it being full audio video support or just chat, channels and teams, we shall see.

Nothing on the official roadmap yet, so no ETA.

How To Make Microsoft Teams Work In Safari

October 2023 Update: A new version of Teams for Mac has now been released.

If you’re having trouble using Microsoft Teams in Safari then here we show you how to make Teams work in the Safari browser on a Mac.

Safari uses something called Intelligent Tracking Prevention which blocks third-party tracking cookies. In order for Microsoft Teams to work in Safari however, Teams needs to use cookies.

Intelligent Tracking Prevention blocks the login.microsoftonline.com cookie which prevents Microsoft Teams from opening.

Although this isn’t a tracking cookie, Microsoft Teams requires a login cookie to secure your login into Teams.

Follow these instructions to use Microsoft Teams in Safari:

• Go to Preferences > Privacy   and uncheck the Prevent cross-site tracking  setting.
• Close your browser and then go to Microsoft Teams in Safari.

You can then use Microsoft Teams in the Safari browser on a Mac.

When you’ve finished using Teams, it’s a good idea to go back to the Privacy settings and re-check the cross-site tracking setting to protect your privacy when using other sites.

If you still can’t get Teams to work in Safari, then your only other option is to use another browser such as Chrome or Firefox.

Alternatively, you can download and install the Microsoft Teams For Mac desktop app which is probably a good idea anyway if you use Microsoft Teams regularly.

Teams Not Working After Updating To Ventura

If you’ve recently updated to macOS Ventura and are finding that Microsoft Teams won’t work, then the above fix may not work.

In this case, the best option is to try using a free tool called Office Reset which will reset Microsoft Office applications including Microsoft Teams.

Once you’ve used Office Reset in Ventura, you should find that MS Teams works again in macOS Ventura.

Did NOT work on my Mac Pro, running Ventura 13.1 and Safari 16.2

This seems to be an issue with macOS Ventura. You can try using Office Reset to fix it.

Using MS Teams with Safari 17 Profiles - Sonoma

I am trying to launch Microsoft teams meetings in the Safari Browser. I had set up a profile for my work, however I find that MS teams will no longer launch in the browser when using a profile.

When I did the same using the Personal (Default) profile MS Teams worked as it has done previously - i.e. it works as long as you have turned off cross site tracking in the Safari settings.

I have turned off profiles for now as not being able to launch MS Teams from my work is an issue preventing me using the profiles feature.

Has anyone found a fix for this?

On iPadOS, it seems when you disable cross-site tracking, it only applies to the default (first) profile. I found it also does not apply to other Safari-wrapped browser apps such as Microsoft Edge or Google Chrome. I wish this could get fixed. Profiles and other browser apps would be great to use; but I can’t with this bug in place.

It would also be good if someone could fix the cross site tracking issue. It should not be necessary to have to turn off cross site tracking just for MS Teams. Microsoft say it is an Apple issue - not sure what Apple say about it.

For the moment I am opening all my MS Teams sessions in a Private Window irrespective of the profile. This seems to give me a consistent experience even if it should not in theory be necessary.

Safari browser support in Microsoft Teams

Teams preview won't open in safari.

Safari 11.0 uses Intelligent Tracking Prevention to block third-party tracking cookies. Because of the way Intelligent Tracking Prevention categorizes cookies, login.microsoftonline.com gets lumped into this category (even though login.microsoftonline.com is not a tracking domain), and Microsoft Teams is prevented from opening.

If you want to use Teams in Safari while Safari browser support is in preview , go to Preferences > Privacy   and uncheck the  Prevent cross-site tracking   setting. Then, close your browser and navigate back to teams.microsoft.com in Safari. 

Changing this setting may impact your experience on other websites.

Once Safari is fully supported for Teams, you will no longer need this workaround.

When you're done using Teams in Safari, go to Preferences > Privacy   and check the  Prevent cross-site tracking   setting again.

Some browsers, such as Internet Explorer 11, Safari, and Firefox, support the Microsoft Teams web app but don't support some of the Teams calling and meeting features. You'll find more information here: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoftteams/unsupported-browsers

Safari Support

Update: safari 14 update.

Apple have announced that Safari 14 will support WebExtensions , upon review and tests by the RES development team we are unable to support it at this time due to a large lack of API support that RES relies on, to get RES working on Safari at this time would require significant time and support investments that the development team does not have. We welcome any other developer to work with us to support Safari.

As of RES v5.2.2, Safari is no longer a supported browser and will not receive updates or support from the development team . We want to support Safari and provide a good user experience for all, however we need Apple's support with this by improving extension development and publishing experiences.

Apple have announced that as of Safari 12, support for this style of extension will be deprecated and will no longer work.

Why did we do it?

It ultimately came down to the direction development of Safari extensions was heading. Major browsers such as Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge and Mozilla Firefox were all adopting a standard commonly known as "WebExtensions". This provides a single API across all browsers. This is hugely beneficial as you can develop for all major browsers from a single code base. Safari is not adopting this standard and instead moving to their own format, with a strong reliance on Xcode. This would require significant investment from the development team to support the browser, as well as core developers having access to Xcode. Supporting this change would mean the codebase for RES would not be unified.

Dropping Safari support was never solely about money as many think it is, we do not have a vendetta against Apple . The discussion lasted many weeks and it was not something we took lightly.

"It was all about the money"

No it was not, whilst we are not a fan of the $100 charge due to our past experiences with Apple. We would be willing to pay it if Safari adopted the extensions standard.

"The RES team have a vendetta against Apple"

Again, no we do not. The final decision was a group one and we stand by it. Many of the core developers use Apple devices on a daily basis for personal or work. During the development of RES any personal biases are set aside.

"Apple does it X way for good user experiences and battery efficiency"

Whilst it is true that Safari is generally better for battery life and UX on the macOS platform, this does not help us with having RES on the platform.

"Can we donate/you charge to support the platform?"

Whilst we appreciate the gesture, it was never about the money and more about the required development time required to support the platform.

If it was possible to support Safari with donations, it would need to cover the following:

• Maintaining special handling for Safari in the main codebase (annoying for every contributor) or a separate fork (even more work, but at least it's siloed)
• ... across _every_ feature of RES (there are a few)
• Writing extra native app code for the shell around the extension
• Owning and maintaining a Mac for development and testing
• Interfacing with Apple's sub-par processes
• Provide tech support for what would now be paying customers, since people raise their expectations when they give money even if it's donation-based
• Manage accounting, taxes
• Paying Reddit their cut per the license agreement
• Potentially pay other contributors to the codebase (several big contributors and many small)
• Potentially paperwork and fees to incorporate (set-up and maintenance costs)
• Potentially have to start paying for services that are currently free to FOSS projects

How do I access a Team call via the safari browser?

Dear Microsoft Support Team,

I shall hope you can help me resolve an issue I have been facing. Let me give you some context to it. I worked for my previous employer who operated on Teams. I have now terminated my employment and evidently my accused to the work email was ceased. Now when I am invited to a Teams call, when I try to access it via the browser, it redirects me to sign in via my work email and the only other option it gives me is to sign up with another account. I don't wish to sign up with an account, I just want to access the call via the browser. I have deleted the Office package from my Mac but that did not help. Interesting enough I can access teams calls via Chrome but not through Safari. Can you help me understand what am I missing and perhaps what can I do to be able to connect to a Teams call via Safari?

Use these tips to avoid scams and learn what to do if you receive suspicious emails, phone calls, or other messages.

If you receive a suspicious email or SMS text message that looks like it's supposed to be from Apple, please email it to [email protected] . 1

If you receive a suspicious FaceTime call or link to a FaceTime call in Messages or Mail, please email a screenshot of the call information or link to [email protected] .

Phishing refers to fraudulent attempts to get personal information from you, usually by email. But scammers use any means they can to trick you into sharing information or giving them money, including:

Fraudulent emails and other messages that look like they're from legitimate companies, including Apple

Misleading pop-ups and ads that say your device has a security problem

Scam phone calls or voicemails that impersonate Apple Support

Fake promotions that offer free products and prizes

Unwanted Calendar invitations and subscriptions

How to identify fraudulent emails and messages

Scammers try to copy email and text messages from legitimate companies to trick you into giving them your personal information and passwords. These signs can help you identify phishing emails:

The sender’s email or phone doesn’t match the name of the company that it claims to be from.

The email or phone they used to contact you is different from the one that you gave that company.

A link in a message looks right, but the URL doesn’t match the company’s website. 2

If you see suspicious Calendar events

If you get an unwanted or suspicious calendar invitation in Mail or Calendar, you can report it as Junk in iCloud. If you might have unintentionally subscribed to a spam Calendar, you can delete it .

If your web browser displays annoying pop-ups

While browsing the web, if you see a pop-up or alert that offers you a free prize or warns you about security problems or viruses on your device, don't believe it. These types of pop-ups are usually fraudulent advertisements, designed to trick you into downloading damaging software or giving the scammer personal information or money.

Don't call the number or follow the links to claim the prize or fix the problem. Ignore the message and simply navigate away from the page or close the entire window or tab.

If you're prompted to download software

Use extreme caution if you download content from the internet. Some downloads found on the internet may not contain the software they claim to, or may contain software that you didn't expect or want. This includes apps that ask to install configuration profiles that can then control your device. If installed, unknown or unwanted software may become intrusive and annoying and could even damage your Mac and steal your data.

To avoid unwanted, fake, or malicious software, install software from the App Store or get it directly from the developer's website. Learn how to safely open software on your Mac or remove unwanted configuration profiles from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.

1. To report an SMS text message, take a screenshot of the message and send it via email. If you forward a message from Mail on your Mac, include the header information by selecting the message and choosing Forward As Attachment from the Message menu.

2. To confirm the destination of a link on your Mac, hover your pointer over the link to see the URL. If you can't see the URL in the status bar in Safari, choose View > Show Status Bar. On your iOS device, you can touch and hold the link.

Apple is reportedly exploring a partnership with Google for Gemini-powered feature on iPhones

Apple is looking to team up with Google for a mega-deal to leverage the Gemini AI model for features on iPhone, Bloomberg reported. This will put Google in a commanding position as the company already has a deal with Apple as the preferred search engine provider on iPhones for the Safari browser.

The publication cited people familiar with the matter saying that Apple is looking to license Google’s AI tech to introduce AI-powered features with iOS updates later this year. Additionally, the company also held discussions with OpenAI to potentially use GPT models, Bloomberg said.

There is surmounting pressure on Apple to catch up with competitors in the AI field such as OpenAI, Microsoft, Anthropic and even Google. In February, Apple CEO Tim Cook said that the company will introduce GenAI features “later this year.”

The company’s job listings over the last year have suggested that Apple is working on multiple internal and external tools powered by generative AI . However, talks of leveraging third-party AI tech means Apple hasn’t progressed as expected in its own AI efforts.

Apple’s own models might power some of the on-device features on the upcoming iOS 18 software update — expected to be announced at the Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) historically held in June. However, the company is exploring partnering with an external provider for generative AI use cases such as image creation and helping users with writing.

Google has had its own set of problems with Gemini. Last month, the company had to pause its image-generation feature after the model created images with historical inaccuracies . Later, Google CEO Sundar Pichai said that Gemini’s responses were “completely unacceptable.” Last week, Google said that it is blocking election-related queries on Gemini across the globe. But TechCrunch found that users could get around those restrictions by introducing typos to some queries.

Despite these fallbacks, Google has an advantage in launching smartphone-related features. Earlier this year, the company partnered with Samsung to introduce Gemini-powered AI features on the Galaxy S24 series of devices . The search giant has also launched these features on its own Pixel series of phones.

Rally ace Carl 'Flash' Tundo believes his longstanding success and experience will help him to a decent finish at next week’s WRC Safari Rally in Naivasha.

The five-time Safari Rally winner is listed in both the Kenya National Rally Championship Safari Rally category and WRC’s support category (WRC2) which has attracted leading Europe-based professional drivers.

Driving under Betika Racing livery for the third year running, the multiple Kenya Rally champion revealed his burning desire to build on his previous performances in the event first held in 1953 as a celebration of the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. 

Entered in a Ford Fiesta Rally2 marque, Tundo will be joined in the four-car Betika Racing team  squad by Andrew Muiruri, Ishmael Azeli and Talanta Hella all-women’s crew of Jenifer Malik  and Kui  Mungai.

Betika have allocated Sh20 million to support the Kenyan drivers, an increase from last year's Sh14 million. 

Tundo said: “I’m privileged and proud to be a part of the Betika Racing outfit for the third consecutive year. We have had a good record with Betika, and a special journey, bringing in a new corporate entity in motorsports.”

Tundo finished ninth overall and third in the WRC3 Class in the 2021 Safari event behind the wheel of a VW Polo R5 (now Rally 2) and emerged the winner of the KNRC category in a Mitsubishi Evolution X in  the 2022 edition .

In 2023, Tundo became the first Kenyan to hit the podium in the WRC’s second-tier category when he powered his Skoda Fabia Rally2 to third overall in WRC2.

The all-Polish crew of Kajetan Kajetanowicz /M. Szczepaniak (Skoda Fabia Evo) an d the Czech Republic duo of Martin Prokop/Z.Jurka in a Fiesta Mk I were top and second respectively.

Daniel Chwist and K. Heller from Poland   driving  a Fabia RS clocked 4:52:52.1 to finish fourth.

The 2021 Safari edition will remain etched on Tundo's memory as he scored historic WRC points in ninth overall, the same year he got his mitts on the FIA African Rally Championship.

“Preparations have been good. I have been practising but in   a different car. I have not been in my Ford (Fiesta) yet. Next week we will work on some technicalities that a Ford has versus the Skoda and VW,” said Tundo.

Malik is also bubbling with confidence ahead of D-day.

"Competing in this year’s Safari Rally is a dream come true. This is my second time competing at the WRC and I hope to inspire young girls in Kenya to pursue their passion for motorsport,” said Malik.

Betika's Managing Director Mutua Mutava said: "We are proud to stand behind Tundo, Muiruri, Azeli, and Malik as they navigate these formidable obstacles of the African terrain with unwavering determination and skill.  We are aware of the vast abilities of our youth and would like to hold their hands whenever we can.”
