Springfield to host inaugural PBA tour stop at Enterprise Park Lanes on Feb. 7

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Enterprise Park Lanes will host the Professional Bowlers Association tour during the PBA Springfield Classic next month, a first for the city of Springfield.

It begins with a pro-am event at 6 p.m. Tuesday Feb. 7 and ends Saturday Feb. 11.

Local bowlers will find the opportunity to bowl with some of their favorite PBA circuit stars during the pro-am. To register, head over to the tournament website .

According to Sunshine Lanes Center Manager Kyndall Martin, who helped organize the event at Enterprise Park Lanes, Springfield has hosted PBA senior and regional matches but never a main event loaded with festivities. The event won’t be televised, but can be viewed with a BowlTV subscription or on Youtube .

Admission to the tournament is free.

On Wednesday evening of the tournament, the facility will host a PBA Cocktail Hour for those 21 or older, featuring some of today’s and yesterday’s biggest names in professional bowling. Cost for the event is $65 a person, with food and drinks included.

The pre-tournament qualifying round begins at 9 a.m. Wednesday morning. Friday’s match play will bring in 22 of the top bowlers to compete in six games, with the top 12 advancing. Saturday’s Round Robin match play will feature two rounds of six games, with the top four advancing to the stepladder finals at 6 p.m. that evening.

In all, 64 bowlers will compete for the 22 cash-prize slots. Last place will receive $3,000, while the PBA Springfield Classic champion will walk out the door with $25,000.

PBA bowler Keven Williams hails from Springfield, and joined the PBA in 2015. The left-hander will be active for the PBA Springfield Classic and hopes for a big win for the local crowd. Williams won his first major tournament in 2022 at the PBA Shark Championship in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin.

Williams told The Heartlander becoming a registered PBA bowler is not an easy task, as participants must meet specific criteria and averages.

“It’s pretty cutthroat. It’s not like other sports, where if you are a professional golfer if you make it on the exempt tour, you make pretty good money,” Williams said. “You gotta earn it out here a little more than other sports. I’m fortunate enough to be on tour and doing my thing. It’s easier said than done.”

Those interested in becoming a PBA professional can find more information here .

Martin says the level of excitement for the PBA Springfield Classic has been fantastic at Enterprise Park Lanes and Sunshine Lanes.

“We’ve never had a PBA event here, so to bring that to our community is something I am personally excited for,” Martin told The Heartlander. “The excitement level is through the roof with the youth here in town. Even with the adults, they get to see some of the guys more their age, like Chris Barnes, Tommy Jones.”

Among other popular names at the tournament will be Packy Hanrahan, Kyle Troup, Anthony Simonsen, Jesper Svensson, Dom Barrett, EJ Tackett and Bill O’Neil.

“We are hoping to do this multiple years,” Martin said. “It ultimately comes down to the PBA; they dictate the stops. We are hoping to give them a well-run tournament. Hopefully they come back to us next year and the year after that.

“We hope to get a bigger televised event sometime. We’ve got some cool ideas in our heads. If we can do this for a year or two, hopefully we can promote and grow the Springfield stop to maybe a major, like the U.S. Open or something like that. We have some ambitions there.”.

Williams says the live experience will be completely different from watching it on television, and fans should do their best to come out and see the action.

“You get to see the full process of a full week on tour with us. You get to watch the practice sessions, us talking to our ball reps, match-play and qualifying. You get to see ups and downs, the rollercoaster ride of bowling for a title. It is way different seeing it live at a center where you might bowl in a league on Wednesday nights vs. watching it on a TV screen or your phone.”

Lost in the cascade of basketball mania that rules the month of March is the story of the Ozarks’ new professional sports champion, an unassuming 5-foot-7 right-hander from Nixa with a cool nickname and a bright future in his sport.

David “Boog” Krol returns to the Professional Bowlers Association Tour next week to open the second half of the season at one of the sport’s majors, the USBC Masters in Las Vegas. Krol, 28, will be on the favorites — alongside names like Jason Belmonte, Kyle Troup and E.J. Tackett.

What a ride it’s been for Krol, who has gone from relative obscurity to stardom in his sport over the last few months.

“I’m living my dream,” Krol said recently, during the PBA Tour’s midseason break. He returned home for a couple of weeks after winning the PBA Delaware Classic and its $25,000 prize, which boosted him to No. 6 on the tour’s playoffs point list, one spot ahead of Australia’s Jason Belmonte who’s probably the world’s best-known bowler.

Boog Krol’s 16-hour drive to televised glory

To explain Krol’s story in simple terms, he decided to tackle the PBA Tour full-time in 2024 after winning three PBA Regional championships last year. The odds of success were long, even to make it into tournaments. Krol first had to navigate PTQs (Pre-Tournament Qualifiers) where only about 10% of fields that typically have 80-100 bowlers advance.

Krol drove 16 hours to Middletown, Delaware and, if he hadn’t performed well in the seven-game PTQ, would have had to turn around and drive home with nothing but frustration. So as great as the paycheck for winning in Delaware was, Krol has shed the pressure of PTQs for at least two years. He made it through four of five this season.

“This title will change my life forever,” Krol said, noting that he has a lifetime exemption into the season-ending Tournament of Champions. “I’m exempt for the tour through the 2025 season.”

Nixa’s ‘Boog’ Krol is finally believing in himself. It’s paying off on the PBA Tour

Krol joins Keven Williams as the only Springfield-area bowlers to win on the PBA Tour. He credits Williams with helping coach him through the nationally televised Delaware Classic finals on March 3, when he defeated Bill O’Neill in an overtime roll off before knocking off Finland’s Thomas Kayhko in the title match.

Pressure of playing on Sundays when the lights are on

pba tour springfield classic

Krol, bowling under the bright lights of national television for the first time, said he was “pretty nervous” on Sunday morning as showtime neared. There were two matches prior to his first one, against O’Neill, and the lane conditions were brutal as the oil pattern deteriorated.

“Sunday morning before the show, I got extremely nervous in our hotel room,” Krol said. “I started to tear up and get nervous. I didn’t know what to expect going into it. I was like ‘holy smokes, this is actually happening.’

pba tour springfield classic

“When we got in the bowling center and I got some practice under the lights and some practice on the off pair (non-TV practice lanes) the nerves kind of cooled down. Then my first shot on TV, I dead-aced it. That’s something I’ll never forget.”

All the players struggled with the lanes either hooking too much or not enough. Krol had a few fortunate breaks against O’Neill and capitalized on the veteran opponent’s miscues. The two tied at 203 apiece after 10 frames and Krol struck in the one-ball rolloff and advanced when O’Neill managed only nine.

“Keven and I talked after the first match with Bill,” Krol said. “He was like, ‘you don’t deserve to be here right now, you got a lot of lucky breaks.’ He said ‘take advantage of it while you can. You don’t deserve to be here, but you have a lot of heart, take advantage of this opportunity.’”

Bowling social media has ‘so much hate’

pba tour springfield classic

Krol did, beating Kayhko 198-170. While Krol did get some breaks, especially against O’Neill, he avoided major mistakes and made his spares. Social media posts afterwards were a mix of praise and criticism as some keyboard warriors ripped Krol for his lucky breaks along the way.

“There was so much hate and so many comments about this title,” Krol said. “This gave me the opportunity to grow as a person and to know that I worked hard all week, that I deserved this title. I spent the last week and a half convincing myself that I deserved this, that I don’t have to prove anything to anyone else.”

Williams said there’s no doubt that Krol earned his championship.

“The little guy has a big heart,” Williams said. “He doesn’t care about anything besides just being respected, and I think he’s earned that respect immediately. I’m excited to see the future and see all the Boog fans that come from this.”

Winning in memory of Sean Swanson

Some of Krol’s post-championship comments paid tribute to the late Sean Swanson, a Springfield PBA pro who died in 2015 after a battle with cancer. Swanson won several big-money amateur tournaments during his career and had one runner-up finish in the PBA Tour.

More importantly, the Springfield Area Sports Hall of Famer played a major role in Krol’s development in the sport.

pba tour springfield classic

“(Swanson) ran the pro shop at Andy Bs and knew I was a bowler and wanted to learn more about the industry,” Krol said. “He kind of took me under his wing and showed me how to drill and fit people, all my pro shop experience. When I became an adult, he took me to tournaments with him. He took me under his wing when I had no one else there.

“While he was battling cancer, I ran both of his shops, in Springfield and Joplin. The fact that he trusted me with that meant the world and I grew to have a connection with him. It was just insane to have the opportunity to share that moment with him, because I know he was looking down. I wanted to do that in memory of him. He was a special guy.”

Krol, with $45,500 in season earnings, now looks to make more memories as his career continues. His goals have been readjusted from simply making it into tournaments to winning more of them.

“Another telecast would be sweet and amazing,” Krol said. “The end goal is making the top 16 for the PBA Tour playoffs and just staying consistent, making more cuts to stay up there in the point standings.

“I dreamed of this growing up. I wanted to be one of the guys holding a trophy on Sunday. To have an opportunity to have that, at such an early stage of my career … I’m one-for-one on TV now.”

PBA: Simonsen climbs ladder to win Missouri Classic

By   NOLAN HUGHES

PBA Communications

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Fifth-seeded Anthony Simonsen climbed Sunday afternoon’s stepladder finals, defeating AJ Johnson, Matt Russo, EJ Tackett and top-seeded Bill O’Neill to win the PBA Pete Weber Missouri Classic.

With the win, Simonsen earned his 14th career PBA Tour title and the $25,000 top prize.

On Friday, Simonsen threw the front-nine in the final game to punch his ticket to the finals. Following a pivotal strike, he tapped his wrist and said “too much time.”

“I really had nothing to lose that last game, and that was the motto today,” Simonsen said. “I barely made the show. I was on house money. Sometimes all it takes is just sneaking through until you get that opportunity.”

Though he felt he had nothing to lose, Simonsen concocted a gameplan to conquer the 45-foot Dragon oil pattern. His command over lanes 29-30 at Enterprise Park Lanes in Springfield, Mo. proved to be the difference.

“On TV shows, I like using balls that I’m comfortable with,” Simonsen said. “I decided I was going to shuffle through a couple of those until hopefully we made the lanes dry enough to the right to throw that Attention Star. I think my game plan today was really solid and I executed it to a tee.”

In the opening match, Simonsen distanced himself from Johnson with a three-bagger in the middle of the match. Meanwhile, Johnson split three times on the right lane — the same blunder that cost him in last week’s PBA Illinois Classic title match.

Johnson advanced to face the lone lefty in Russo, who now lives in the St. Louis area and bowls regularly with Weber during the offseason.

After a strong start, Russo left a pocket 7-10 in the fifth frame and washed out in the sixth. That was all Simonsen needed to prevail with a 247-202 victory.

The semifinals pitted Simonsen against reigning Player of the Year EJ Tackett. The 2023’s season’s top two players grinded through the transition as neither player struck for five consecutive frames.

Tackett tossed aside any struggles as he aced three strikes in the 10th, forcing Simonsen to double.

Just as he did on Friday evening, Simonsen dialed in when he needed it most.

O’Neill, seeking his second title of the season, awaited Simonsen in the title match.

The current front-runner for Player of the Year elected to finish on the left lane, a decision he soon came to regret. O’Neill left a variation of the 2-10 split in the fourth, sixth and eighth frames.

Simonsen, who displayed the savviness of a fifth-year-senior point guard, cruised to a 225-156 win.

When Pete Weber threw his final shots on the PBA Tour last Thursday, Simonsen was the first player to congratulate the Hall of Famer. Sunday, Weber returned the favor to present him the championship trophy.

“The sport of bowling wouldn’t be where it is today without him,” Simonsen said. “It’s emotional for me because we’re getting to the point where Father Time has kind of taken over a lot of the guys who I watched at a younger age. This is going to be the first time in 66 years without a Weber associated with the PBA Tour.”

“I think me and Pete are alike at times,” Simonsen said. “Sometimes it seems like we need to bowl angry to bowl better. Sometimes it comes out the way it should; sometimes it’s a little unprofessional.

“I jokingly told Pete, ‘I don’t know if there’s anybody better to win the inaugural Pete Weber event than me.’”

No days off in 2024: The PBA Tour keeps rolling as the Just Bare PBA Indiana Classic, the fifth title event of the season, begins Monday in Anderson, Ind.

Rounds 7-8 of the PBA Elite League presented by Snickers takes place on Monday night (6 p.m. ET on BowlTV) before the main event qualifying begins on Tuesday morning.
