Coors Brewery Tour

Coors Brewery Tour – Golden

The largest single brewery in the world, Coors Brewing Company, is located in downtown Golden. Tours and tastings are offered year-round and are open to guests of all ages as long as they are accompanied by an adult.

Explore a live working factory where every phase of the beer-making process is observed. The tours cost a fee and are self-guided with headsets available. There are learning stations around with pre-recorded descriptions. Reservations are required for all guests.

Hailing from Prussia, Adolph Coors, and Jacob Schueler established the brewery in Golden in 1873. The mountain on the Coors can is based on a Rocky Mountain peak in southwest Colorado.

Touring the Coors Brewery in Golden

There are two types of tours: self-guided (year-long) and guided tours (seasonally). The traditional 30-minute self-guided tour has educational stations and individual headsets. You get to enjoy a complimentary sample and three 10 oz beers afterward. During slower months, a live tour is given and they run for about 30 minutes.

You can also go on the Sampling-only tour where you go straight to the tasting room and try three complimentary beers. This is often what the locals do and you are free to partake in this tour daily. Enjoy some of Coors’s classic, seasonal, and even test-market beers. The whole operation lasts 1 – 1.5 hours including the shuttle, tour, and beer tastings. Drinking time may vary.

Getting There

Parking for the tour is located at 13th and Ford Streets, one block from the brewery. A free shuttle takes you downtown to the Coors factory and the driver usually tells you about the city of Golden on the way.

Tours and imbibing at the bar get busy during peak season, so plan weekdays and off-peak times when possible.

Great tour of Coors historic Colorado Brewery ! Very informative tour with path through the factory & several beverage stops too ! Great gift shop & beverage stop at end of tour also.

The view from the bridge over the water near the brewery was great. We missed the tour and the gift shop “ end of the tour was closed but it was still nice seeing the brewery from the outside and standing on the bridge. Not sure about open containers on the bridge but we had some ice cold Coors while looking at the plant. It was 9 degrees Tuesday so we didn’t stay long but we did get good pictures.

We booked a month in advance, and it was worth the price ($20 per person) for the tour. Our tour guide was well informed and personable. We enjoyed touring the factory and you get 3- 8 oz pour samples throughout the tour (just about an hour). Very informative, and I can tell you that knowing that 99% of all products are recycled, my husband and I are going to commit to drinking Coors from here on out. I would tour the brewery again.

We (4 adult family members with two significant others) were in town for a November wedding. I checked the bookings for a full tour and realized we needed to make these about two weeks in advance, so we were able to schedule a brewery tasting event instead. Good history and information on the 5 minute shuttle ride to the brewery and the tasting lounge was artifact filled and fun.

What the heck happened? The Coors tour used to be free of charge. Now it’s $20. Reservations required but the next available slot is one month out. Geesh

Booked a month in advance, and it was definitely worth the price for the brewery tour. Justin was our guide and we learned a lot while sampling! Do not arrive too early for the tour bus, since you’ll have to wait until it’s almost time for your tour to leave. We arrived about 30 minutes early, but they time the tours so your guide meets you at the brewery, so no getting on the bus earlier.

Real estate | redevelopment of coors manufacturing site in heart of golden begins, multi-year project to transform 12.5-acre property into office, mixed-use development.

(Rendering provided by Tryba Architects) The Coors family is redeveloping a former manufacturing plant in downtown Golden as a five-block, mixed-use development that will include office buildings, apartments, a hotel, restaurants and open space. Groundbreaking for the first building, the new headquarters for CoorsTek, has taken place with more work to follow.

The first phase of a project that will transform a large industrial site in the heart of Golden is underway with the start of work on what will become the new global headquarters for CoorsTek.

The recent groundbreaking for the first building in the development called Clayworks is being followed by demolition of structures that housed CoorsTek’s manufacturing and research and development work for more than a century. The 182,000-square-foot building will be the new headquarters for the company, which manufactures technical ceramics for such industries as aerospace, defense, energy, agriculture and electronics.

The office building, expected to take a couple of years to complete, will provide space for another company and three food and beverage outlets. Cohen said the developer is still talking to prospective tenants.

Plans for other parts of the 12.5-acre site include more office space, apartments, a hotel, retail outlets, open spaces and public plazas.

“It’s been almost four years since we conceived of the idea of redeveloping the property. It’s a thrill to have reached this milestone,” said Dan Cohen, president of AC Development.

AC Development is owned by the Coors family, who started what became Coors Brewing Co. in Golden and owns CoorsTek, once called the Coors Porcelain Co. CoorsTek’s new headquarters will incorporate the site’s first building, put up in 1910, another original structure and will contain other family businesses.

A five-story building that was constructed later will also be part of the redevelopment. The entire project, which will cover roughly 1.25 million square feet, will take from six to 10 years to finish, Cohen said.

AC Development hasn’t said how much the first building will cost, but Michael Coors, co-CEO of CoorsTek, said in a 2022 interview that all the work would likely cost between $600 million and $900 million.

“We are proud to be part of this exciting project that will redefine this historic area,” Coors said in a statement.

The new CoorsTek headquarters will be designed by Tryba Architects and will reflect “our commitment to innovation, sustainability, and an exceptional work environment for our employees,” Coors said.

Dan Cohen, AC Development President and CoorsTek project representative, left, and Michael Coors, co-CEO of CoorsTek, Inc. right, stand in front of Building 1 at CoorsTek, Inc along Ford Street on August 22, 2022 in Golden, Colorado.ÊThis old brick building is the oldest building on the site that was built in 1910. The building will be one of a few that will be renovated and preserved in the redevlopment of the site. CoorsTekÊis redeveloping its 12-acre manufacturing site to include the global company's headquarters, retail, restaurant and residential projects. The multi-block site at Washington Avenue and 8th Street had been in continuous use for industrial purposes for well over 100 years, ceasing its operations earlier this year.ÊCoorsTek, formerly Coors Porcelain, was founded on the property in 1910 and the site is the historical location of the invention of the aluminum beverage can. CoorsTek, Inc. is a privately owned manufacturer of technical ceramics for aerospace, automotive, chemical, electronics, medical, metallurgical, oil and gas, semiconductor and many other industries. (Photo by Helen H. Richardson/The Denver Post)

This first phase of Clayworks will be built by the Denver office of Holder Construction. The building will be all electric and sit atop one level of below-grade parking. Dozens of 500-foot deep geothermal wells will help power the building and solar panels will likely be added.

The Golden City Council approved rezoning the former CoorsTek manufacturing site and the redevelopment plan in the summer of 2022. Cohen said the unanimous approval followed more than 110 community meetings and hearings.

“A lot of buildings had to be abated for asbestos. We did a lot of salvaging of machinery and ephemera from the history of operations of the manufacturing,” Cohen said. “We’ll be incorporating some of those features, like kiln carts, into the design.”

Much significant work took place on the industrial site, such as the perfection of the aluminum beverage can and advancement in technical ceramics, Cohen said.

“We want to embrace that. The name Clayworks is a nod to that history,” he added.

Porcelain was manufactured at the Golden site because of the quality of the clays in the soil.

“We’re excited to reknit this site into the downtown Golden urban fabric and build some beautiful buildings and bring people there,” Cohen said.
