Visiting friends and relatives, often referred to as VFR, is one of the most prominent types of tourism . Whether you are a tourism management student or a tourism industry entrepreneur, it is important that you understand this vital sector of the tourism industry .

In this article, I will tell you what is meant by the term ‘visiting friends and relatives’ (VFR) and where the term came from. I will also tell you a bit about the reasons why people might travel to visit friends and relatives and how this industry has grown in recent years. Lastly, I will give you some examples of where and how VFR might occur in a global context.

What is visiting friends and relatives (VFR)?

Is vfr tourism, where did the term vfr come from, changing patterns of visiting friends and relatives, globalisation, growing expat population, freedom of movement, desire to travel, degrowth in vfr, examples of vfr, to conclude: visiting friends and relatives (vfr).

Visiting friends and relatives is a term that we hear thrown around frequently within the tourism industry. And, to be frank- it’s actually not difficult to understand.

Essentially, VFR is the movement of a person away from the place in which they live to a place where a family member or friend lives. Within the context of tourism, it is a prerequisite that said visit is far enough away from the person’s home and lasts a long enough duration that it can be classified as ‘tourism’.

Does visiting my grandma for afternoon tea at her home in the next village count as tourism?

What about if I travel to Spain to stay with my dad for two weeks in the summer holidays?

Well, whilst it may seem pretty obvious (the first is not tourism and the second is), there is no hard and fast rule that says when VFR is and isn’t tourism.

If you have read some of my other posts, such as A Definition of Tourism , you will notice that this is a recurring theme in the tourism literature. It is all too common that the boundaries are blurred and that the grey areas leave the door open for subjectivity and ambiguity.

How do Governments measure VFR? How can we compare VFR industries across different parts of the world? The answer- who knows and, well- no.

visit relatives

Visiting friends and relatives (VFR) is a concept that was defined by tourism industry stakeholders in order to better understand this sector of the tourism industry.

Segmentation of this type enabled travel industry researchers and academics to study the relationship between VFR travellers and aspects such as economic and social impacts of tourism .

By having a better understanding of the VFR sector, tourism businesses could be better informed to plan their operations. So, for example, hotels could better understand what facilities guests might be seeking and tourist attractions can understand what provisions may be needed for these types of tourists .

The notion of visiting friends and family, or VFR, has changed significantly over the years.

Migration patterns have changed a lot- think back to the advent of the slave trade compared to todays economic migration- I am a prime example of this with out move from the UK to China .

Over the years travel has become easier, more affordable and more convenient. It is easy to hop on a budget airline flight to fly across Europe for a couple of days. Whilst it takes a bit longer, it is also perfectly reasonable to travel to the other side of the world to visit friends and family for a few weeks.

Other factors that have influenced the growth of VFR includes increased urbanisation of areas, the building of more airports and transport infrastructure and globalisation .

Reasons for the growth in visiting friends and relatives (VFR)

There are several different reasons for the growth in the visiting friends and relatives market around the world. This includes globalisation, a growing expat population , migration, freedom of movement, education and the desire to travel.

I will further explain each of these below.

Globalisation is the notion that we are all becoming more alike, or more ‘global’. Globalisation is increasingly present in almost every aspect of the world that we live in. From English schools in Taiwan, to smart phones in Ethiopia to fajitas in Australia , the world is becoming more and more connected and more and more alike.

Globalisation is bringing people together- we can communicate more easily and understand each other better than before. But globalisation is also increasing distance between us. People who would never have considered a move to, say Japan, are not relocating across the globe for better financial benefits, knowing that they can still get many of their home comforts.

Many business are opening up offices, headquarters and factories around the world and workforces are distributed all over the globe. This means that there is more business travel than ever before.

The corporate world has, in many regards, become a multinational industry. This has meant that there has been an increase in people moving to live overseas around the world. In the UAE, for example, less than 12% of people who live there are Emirates, meaning that the expat population makes up more than 88%! Wow!

visit relatives

Naturally, expats will want to travel to visit their friends and families from time to time, and their friends and families are likely to want to visit them too. This is a clear example of VFR.

People have chosen to migrate from place to place throughout the history of tourism .

Over the years migration patterns have changed. Sometimes people migrate for safety reasons, such as war and political instability. Other times people choose to migrate for economic reasons, usually because the country that they are travelling to offers a better financial situation. And some people choose to migrate for other reasons such as the culture , the weather or the social aspects of a destination.

Popular migration origins, whereby people have opted to migrate the UK throughout the past couple of decades include; India , Pakistan, Jamaica, Nigeria and Poland.

People who have migrated out of the UK in recent years have typically chosen to relocate to the USA, Australia, New Zealand, Spain, Singapore and Hong Kong.

People who migrate will often return to their country of origin to visit their friends and relatives. Likewise, their friends and relatives will often travel to visit them.

Having the freedom to travel to different places has inevitably impacted the VFR industry.

This is most evident in Europe, where the EU four freedoms has resulted in years of uninterrupted travel within the union. A decade or so ago there was a significant influx of people with passports from Eastern European countries moving to the UK. This was as a result of the economic opportunities available to in the UK compared to their home countries.

Education has also become increasingly globalised. Where I live, in Hangzhou, China , people pay a lot of money to send their children to international schools, where they are prepped to attend university in the UK or America. This is common practice in many parts of the world.

VFR amongst students and their families is a significant part of the visiting friends and relatives sector.

Lastly, the most dominant reason for an increase in VFR is the desire to travel.

People nowadays want to see more of the world than ever before. People want to experience new cultures and do things that may not be possible in their home areas (i.e. sunbathing on the beach or skiing on a mountain).

Increased desire to travel has resulted in more people moving overseas, embarking on expatriate lifestyles and travelling for VFR purposes.

Whilst there has been a clear upwards trend in visiting friends and relatives around the world for many years, this was thwarted by the COVID-19 pandemic. During this time irreversible societal changes occurred including a growth in the shut in economy and technological advancements in telecommunication.

It is likely that many areas will never be the same again. The elderly, who were once averse to using smart devices with significant technological capabilities, have now mastered the use of FaceTime. Group get togethers on Zoom are now commonplace. Microsoft Teams is now the most used classroom around the world.

It is likely that some of these areas will remain popular and may even continue to grow in the future. While there will always be a place for visiting grandma in Scotland and attending a work conference in Budapest, these will likely be less popular now that the world has adapted to using modern technologies that overcome the barriers of distance.

Here are some examples of situations whereby a person might travel for VFR purposes:

  • Visiting an aunty who moved to Canada ten years ago
  • Going to stay with an old school friend who lives in Portugal
  • Meeting your spouses family who live in Ghana
  • Travelling to Thailand to attend a family wedding
  • Going to visit your son at university in California
  • Travelling to Dubai to visit your best friend who moved there for work last year
  • Spending a month in Australia with your grandchildren who were born down under
  • Taking a short trip to Romania to visit your sick relative
  • Returning to your university town for a reunion event

Hopefully now you understand what is meant by the term VFR and you understand why it is such an important part of the tourism industry. As you can see, there are many different situations whereby a person may choose to travel for VFR, from attending a school reunion to visiting your grandma. When Relatives Visit

Keep the Holidays Harmonious Holidays, as much as they're supposed to be full of warmth and laughter with friends and family, have the potential for disaster. Because we expect so much, and are often overtired and overstressed, emotions -- and tensions -- tend to run high by the time family gets together. In this atmosphere, even the most innocent comment or minor infraction can open old wounds or cause major new battles.

Set the Tone by Phone Many holiday conflicts with relatives may be avoided by a telephone conversation prior to their visit. These discussions should be loving and empathic and free from warnings, anger, or criticism. Your conversation might include:

  • A discussion of appropriate and not overly expensive gifts for your children.
  • An explanation of how you discipline your children and how your kids will respond if your relatives attempt to discipline them.
  • How you are looking forward to their being an important part of your holiday celebrations.
  • The schedule of your holiday events and rituals.
  • An agreement that you all will refrain from arguments and criticizing one another, especially if there are children present.
  • Any changes or elimination of longstanding holiday traditions that might disappoint them or cause them to feel rejected.

Conflict : Your mother has taken away a cookie from your five-year-old son, saying, "You can't eat that cookie now. It's too close to supper and it will spoil your appetite." Your son has withdrawn to a corner of the room and is bordering on tears.

Resolution : You put your arm around your mother and explain to her that you have relaxed your eating rules for your kids during the holidays: "Mom, we're letting the kids have a few sweet treats in between meals during the next few days. I'll go tell Tim you hadn't heard about our rule change. After that, maybe you could ask him to show you his seashell collection. He's been looking forward to showing it to you."

Conflict : On Christmas Eve, you say to all your family, "Okay, time for everyone to open up one present." Your parents grimace and your dad says, "What's this all about? It's not evenChristmas and we're opening up presents? We never did that when you were growing up."

Resolution : "Mom, Dad, this year we've started a new tradition where everyone gets to open up one gift on Christmas Eve. So, we've kept most of the old traditions that we had growing up, like lightingup the tree while we all sang 'Silent Night,' and we've added a few new ones. Here's your Christmas Eve present. By the way, which one of you is going to light up the tree tonight?"

Conflict : Your Uncle Lou and your Aunt Harriet are rather tipsy from too many eggnogs and are arguingyet again about who ran the family business into bankruptcy: "Lou, I told you that you should never have hired anyone outside the family to do the books. I should have done the accounting. And another thing..."

Resolution : You quietly ask Uncle Lou and Aunt Harriet to join you in another room. "You know, when you were arguing just now I noticed that some of the little kids looked scared. Your kids looked embarrassed. You two can always get into a good fight about this subject. But now is not the time, is it?" Then switch gears: "I can remember when we were kids and you two used to do that hilarious Abbott-and-Costello comedy routine, 'Who's On First'. How about making us all laugh by doing it now? This party could use a little livening up."

Families -- and holidays -- are often less-than-perfect, but you can make the most of your times together by planning ahead, accentuating the positive, and downplaying any little incidents that may have (in the past!) caused family strife. If you lower your expectations just a little, a great time can be had by all!

Taking a trip to visit grandparents or older relatives tips to reduce the risk.

Allison Aubrey - 2015 square

Allison Aubrey

Jane Greenhalgh, NPR

Jane Greenhalgh

Before you visit older relatives this summer, plan ahead.

One of the hardest things during this pandemic — for kids and adult children — has been staying away from their parents and grandparents.

People 65 years and older are at higher risk for getting a severe case of COVID-19, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. And about 80% of deaths in the U.S. from COVID-19 have been in people older than 65.

So it's been especially important for older people to practice social distancing — even from family members — to reduce the risk of infection.

But the summer is here, communities are reopening and with many families living miles apart, a trip to see parents and grandparents is tempting. Here are some things to consider before you go.

Assess the risk

Remember, the risk of becoming severely ill with COIVID-19 increases with age, says Dr. Ravina Kullar , an epidemiologist and spokesperson for the I nfectious Disease Society of America. So the older the parent or grandparent, the higher the risk. And if your relative has an underlying health condition , like diabetes, lung disease, hypertension, or if they are immunosuppressed, "that puts them at even higher risk," Kullar says. So before the visit, assess the age and health of the person you are visiting — and consider whether the trip is worth the risk.

Plan ahead, by two weeks

If you decide to make the trip, the two weeks leading up to the visit are key, says Dr. William Miller , an epidemiologist at Ohio State University College of Public Health. You want to reduce your chance of infection as much as possible. While complete quarantine may not be practical, limit outings or social gatherings, and take maximum precautions when going out. Practice social distancing, wear a mask, and work from home if possible, to reduce your chances of getting infected. Complete quarantine would mean staying entirely home except for necessary medical care.

Another factor to consider is what the infection rates are where you live, says Kullar. You have more risk of infection if you live in a place which is reporting a lot of new cases every day, than if you live in an area where no cases have been reported for several weeks. You can use NPR's coronavirus tracker to find out how many cases there are in your state.

Tracking the pandemic: are coronavirus cases rising or falling in your state.

To find detailed information about your county, check your state's health department web site — many states publish county-level data, or look up your area in a national tracker like the Dartmouth Atlas of Health Care.

If you can, make it a road trip

Traveling by car will be safer than traveling by plane or train, Miller says. The main risks in a road trip are the stops along the way, such as restaurants or public restrooms.

"I would recommend you do anything you can to limit your exposure," Kullar says. "If you have to fill up the gas tank, put gloves on and use hand sanitizer. Pack your own food so there are no additional stops at restaurants."

The main risk from restrooms are from those that are small, busy and poorly ventilated — like "those restrooms in a gas station off the highway where the restroom is outside," Miller says. Try to choose a bathroom that looks clean and is well stocked with supplies. Avoid bunching up in a line, or staying in the restroom long, if you are within 6 feet of others. Wear a mask, wash your hands after you go, and use hand sanitizer if you touch any surfaces after that.

If it's a long trip and you need to stay overnight in a hotel, "make sure you sanitize everything," Kullar says. Take disinfectant, wipe down surfaces, limit time spent in indoor public spaces and wear a mask.

Think twice before you fly

"Planes are a major concern," Miller says, despite the high level of air filtration on most planes. In planes you are exposed to people several rows ahead and behind, for an extended period of time. It can also be hard to social distance as you navigate the airports. Trains and buses likely have similar exposure, Miller says.

If you do take a plane, bus or train, "choose routes that are less populous," says Dr. Emily Landon , a hospital epidemiologist and infectious diseases specialist at University of Chicago Medicine. "Make sure you are wearing a mask and using hand hygiene," she says. And look for an airline, train or bus company that is enforcing rules like universal masking.

If you do fly, or take public transportation, you need to quarantine on arrival, Miller says. Stay in a hotel or rental, and socially distance for 10 to 14 days, before visiting your parents or grandparents. "This means a true quarantine — no visits to theme parks, museums or restaurants," Miller says.

Should you get tested?

Kullar suggests getting a PCR test before you travel. That's the diagnostic test to determine if you are infected with the virus that causes COVID-19. People who are asymptomatic or presymptomatic can spread the virus, without even knowing they are infected. If your test is positive you should cancel your trip and quarantine yourself for 14 days and get retested. Also, it is important to tell anyone that you have been around of your positive test result, Kullar says.

But if your test is negative, you still need to take precautions. Tests are not always accurate . According to the CDC, it's possible you could still have COVID-19, even if your test result is negative.

FDA Cautions About Accuracy Of Widely Used Abbott Coronavirus Test

Coronavirus Live Updates

Fda cautions about accuracy of widely used abbott coronavirus test.

"It's important to remember testing is not perfect ," Miller says. "A test is a snapshot in that moment." If the test is taken too early after infection, there may not be enough virus present to be detected by a test.

So if you do get a negative test before you travel, you must still make sure you've put in two weeks of strict social distancing before the visit.

From Camping To Dining Out: Here's How Experts Rate The Risks Of 14 Summer Activities

Where should you stay?

Given that many people won't be able to fully quarantine, you want to be really careful, "get an Airbnb" or a hotel room, advises Kullar, and just drop by and visit. "Sit outside, greet without touching. Keep your distance. Wear a mask and stay outdoors," she says. "Transmission is a much lower probability outside, as long as you are keeping a good 6 feet distance apart, thanks to the constant airflow," she adds.

If you've been able to quarantine for 14 days, it's reasonable to stay with your older relatives in their home. But, remember, you need to remain vigilant. "Your risk is tied to the risk of the people that you spend time with up close and unmasked," Landon says.

So once you've arrived where your older relatives live, "you want to keep your bubble intact," Miller says. You may want to limit any other social contacts during the visit and just focus on quality time with the grandparents or a few close relatives. Anybody that you are going to hang out with up close and without your mask, especially indoors, could potentially spread the virus. So, keep the circle small, and expand it only with people who have been practicing social distancing and taking precautions.

And if you're adding more people to the mix for a gathering, it's best if you can stay outdoors, and tell everyone to BYOB — and BYO-everything (bring your own everything) to limit the touching of shared surfaces.

Limit activities when you get there

What you do during the visit also matters. Avoid crowds, and stick to outdoor activities as much as possible.

"Don't go out to theme parks and museums [or other crowded places], even if the grandparents don't go along," Miller says. That's because most transmissions of the virus are thought to happen in household settings. So if you get exposed outside the home you could bring that home and infect your relatives.

"If you're sharing the house, everything you do is shared with the elderly folks," Miller says.

If you are taking young children to visit their grandparents, talk to them before you go, advises Kullar, tell them why it's not a good idea to hug their grandmother or grandfather. "Really have a solid discussion with them about that because they may have trouble adhering to the social distancing measures." Miller agrees: "Limit hugs and close contact, unless you have done a full quarantine" — which means not leaving the house for anything except necessary medical care.

Consider staying home

Unless, you can rigorously follow all the guidelines above, it may be that the best way to be really safe is to forego the family visit this year and stay home, Miller says. Find creative ways to engage with your parents or grandparents by phone or video. Play games by video, read books together, watch a movie at the same time.

"This is a time to embrace some virtual tools," Kullar says, to make sure your loved one doesn't feel socially isolated. She lives in Los Angeles, her mother in North Carolina, so they meet for morning coffee using face time and have dinner together maybe once a week.

Where Will The Journey Take You?

Visit Your Relatives Day

Visit Your Relatives Day

In today’s busy world you probably do not have time to talk to your family. And that is where Visit Your Relatives Day comes in. It is a day that encourages us to either visit or communicate with our family and see how each other is.

Just another day of the year to spend with the family!

There are plenty of special family days spread out throughout the year.

I have counted 26 days. That is though besides birthdays, reunions, and other occasions.

If I am wrong about this number then please correct me by commenting below this post.

You have heard of Father’s Day and Mother’s Day. They are celebrated all over the world, although the date can differ depending on which country you are from.

These two particular days for our parents have a rich history. Father’s Day can be traced back 4,000 years to Babylon, while Mother’s Day goes back to Ancient Greece and Rome.

Special Date:

Visit Your Relatives Day – May 18

Express Your Thoughts Below

Express Your Thoughts Below!

I would love to hear from you., origins of visit your relatives day.

The origin of Visit Your Relatives Day though is uncertain .

I can find no history to this special day and so I do not know when it began.

If you do know then I would love to hear from you. You can comment below this post.

Despite not knowing when this day did start the message of the day is the same as all the others.

All of these days make us aware that we should spend time with our family and show that we love, care, and are there for them whenever they need us.

What You Can Do On Visit Your Relatives Day

If you do not get a chance during the year to see your family then why not make the effort and see them on Visit Your Relatives Day.

What can I do?

You may have even have lost touch with certain family members so please take advantage of this special day.

We do live in a fast-paced world.

We may only get to spend time with our family for a few days of the year, maybe Thanksgiving Day or Christmas Day.

If you don’t live nearby then you may not get to see them at all.

So, what can you do?

You could plan a family reunion for Visit Your Relatives Day.

If you cannot get together with several members of your family then why not catch up with just your siblings, or parents, or cousins, or aunts and uncles, or any other family member that you haven’t seen in a while.

You may not be able to see your family in person due to how far you are living away from them.

So, why not make a phone call or make a video call over the Internet?

I prefer face-to-face as it just makes it so much more personal and you can connect more.

You could though send a card or a letter and show your family that you are thinking of them.

Doing at least something on this day will show them that you are thinking about them, even if you do not live near them.

My Final Thoughts

There is a saying that you may have heard, “ You can choose your friends, but you cannot choose your family “. And that is so true.

No matter if you have had a falling out or disagreement why not take this day and show them that you care.

After all, life is too short!

I am sure you have heard that saying as well.

Visit Your Relatives Day is a day to reconnect with your family and build, (or re-build), family ties and relationships.

For me, I cherish any time of the year where I can spend with my family.

We are so wrapped up in our world, and this is especially true if you now have a family of your own.

Discover your family tree!

I particularly like this day because it gives me another chance to catch up with family and find out about my ancestors.

I can get to see a family member and ask them about my family tree.

More photos, documents, family heirlooms can be collected. And I can ask them more about what they know about my ancestors.

Not only can I find out names and dates of people to add to my tree but I could also be fortunate to hear stories that I have never heard before.

This is so true with my father.

Every time that I get a chance to speak to him he will have a story about an ancestor which he has never spoken about. It does surprise me, (and him I suppose) when these ‘new’ stories pop up.

So, if you are working on your family tree then take this time and use it wisely. You can get so much information from your relatives.

And the good thing about it is that it is FREE!

And Finally!

If this day was of interest to you then please check out the Days of the Year website.

There you will find information regarding this day as well as other fascinating days that are celebrated throughout the year.

Great post, Owain. Family is the most important thing in life. A lot of people don’t realize it, until someone they meant to spend more time with is gone. We all need to do a better job of staying connected. Thanks again for the post.

Thank you CJ. That’s exactly right what you’re saying. We all need to spend more time with our relatives. I know it can be difficult though with our busy lives, but we need to make an effort.

And speaking as a genealogist it is also important as we can find out so much from our relatives. And as I’ve said on many times some of the information if we don’t record it from our relatives then it will be lost forever.

Great highlight Owain. After reading this I feel I need to visit so many family members I have not seen.

My family are not into their ancestral history but I have been so keen to dig in and find out more. I think as all my ancestors would be from Italy and my immediate fam are all in Australia.

When discovering my family tree, what are some of the challenges when researching family line in other countries?

Thanks for the great information.

I am glad that I have inspired you to research your family tree. You will discover though that some family members will not be so interested. So may even be less than helpful. This could be because they are concerned as to what you will record. But you can reassure them that you will not share your information freely and publicly.

The challenges with searching for your ancestors overseas is knowing where to look. But also if you do know where to find information you may not be able to search those archives efficiently to find your ancestors.

You could check out my Italy Heritage post to get some guides on how to find your Italian ancestors. It’s from Shop Family Tree and they have excellent prices on collections such as this.

Thanks Owain,

Looks like they have great deals for what I’d like to research.

I’ll let you what results I get.

Yes they do Vince. I particularly like th collections that they have because they have great reductions on them. They can really show you where to start your search. All the best to you.

I agree with you Owain, researching your family tree and meeting ‘long lost’ members of your family is so cool! My family and I did our tree back to the 1600s and we actually met the oldest living relative in our family when we went to Scotland on a family trip last year. It was super cool to hear him talk about how much has changed in the past 90 years of his life. I had actually never even heard of this holiday, so thank you for sharing!

It’s my absolute pleasure Craig. That’s incredible that you have gone back to the 1600s. I am impressed.

Also, I’m pleased to hear that you have met contact with lost members of your family. I too have found several cousins that I was just not aware I even had.

And your relative being in his 90s! He really must have lots of stories to pass on.

Wow Ive never even heard of this one! Where did you find out about it?

The National Day Calendar website was a great resource for me to discover this day and other special family days . You would be surprised as to what other days there are. There’s even a ‘Have a Coke Day’. Can you believe that?

Hi Owain, thanks for highlighting this, it’s not something I was aware of. You say you’re not sure where it started. Well, it could well be something that it was invented recently. After all, if you look at Facebook these days every day seems to be a day for something or other. Still, it’s a great idea for an excuse to visit relatives, not that we should really need one but these days everyone is so busy with their own lives. May 18 – that’s tomorrow! So, are you planning a visit to any relatives???

Yep, you’re right Craig, I would say that it was created recently. It’s pretty much the same story with most of the special family days that I have discovered.

I won’t be able to visit my relatives tomorrow, but I can still give them a call or contact them through the Internet. Hope you do too and say hello to your family Craig.

How to Sponsor a Relative to Visit USA: Complete Guide

How to Sponsor a Relative to Visit USA

Do you have a family member or friend who you would like to sponsor for a visit to the United States? The process may seem daunting, but it’s actually not too difficult. In this complete guide, we will walk you through everything you need to do to sponsor a relative to visit the USA.

Apply Online

Who can sponsor relatives to visit USA

There are a few ways that relatives can be sponsored to visit the United States.

The most common way is for a family member who is a citizen or permanent resident of the United States to sponsor their relative.

The sponsor will need to fill out an I-130 form, which is a Petition for Alien Relative , and submit it to the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) . If the petition is approved, the relative will then need to apply for a visa at a U.S. consulate or embassy.

Another way that relatives can be sponsored to visit the United States is through the Visa Waiver Program.

This program allows citizens of certain countries to travel to the United States for business or tourism for up to 90 days without a visa.

However, not all countries are eligible for the Visa Waiver Program , and there are some restrictions on who can use it.

For example, travelers must have a passport that is valid for at least six months after their planned stay in the United States, and they must have a return ticket to their home country.

In addition, they must not have been denied entry into the United States within the past five years, and they must not have any criminal convictions.

If you are sponsoring a relative who is not a citizen or permanent resident of the United States, you will need to fill out an I-134 form , which is an Affidavit of Support.

This form shows that you are able to financially support your relative while they are in the United States. You will also need to provide evidence of your income and assets, as well as your relative’s ties to their home country.

💡 Tip: Buy travel health insurance before your trip.

Check out popular travel insurance plans and choose one that suits you.

Most plans only cost less than $20 a day.

Steps to Sponsor a Relative to Visit the USA

The first step in sponsoring a relative to visit the USA is to ensure that you are eligible to sponsor them.

You will need to be a US citizen or legal permanent resident, and you will need to have an income that meets the poverty guidelines set by the US government.

If you are unsure about your eligibility , you can check the US Citizenship and Immigration Services website.

Once you have determined that you are eligible to sponsor a relative, you will need to gather some required documents .

These include your birth certificate, your passport, your sponsor form (I-864) , and evidence of your income.

You will also need to provide a copy of your relative’s birth certificate and passport.

If you have any other family members who are US citizens or legal permanent residents, you will need to provide their information as well.

After you have gathered all of the required documents, you will need to submit them to the US Citizenship and Immigration Services.

You can do this online, by mail, or in person at a local office.

Once your application has been received, it will be processed and a decision will be made on whether or not your relative can come to the USA.

If your relative is approved to visit the USA , you will need to help them with the next steps.

This includes making sure they have a valid passport and visa, and making travel arrangements. You will also need to provide them with financial support while they are in the USA.

Sponsoring a relative to visit the USA can be a long and complicated process, but it is possible to do if you are eligible and have all of the required documents.

Visiting Friends or Relatives

Family

People who travel from their country of residence (a high-income country) and return to his or her home country (low- or middle-income country) to visit friends or relatives are called VFR travelers. VFR travelers may have different experiences from tourists because they usually stay for a longer period of time, eat local food, and interact with people in the local community. These activities can put VFR travelers at higher risk for certain diseases. If you are planning VFR travel, follow CDC’s steps below to stay safe and healthy.

Before Travel

Even if you traveled to another country to visit your friends or relatives in the past, there may be vaccines, medicines or other health precautions you need to take for your next trip. Take the following steps to prepare for your trip.

Check CDC’s destination pages for travel health information . Check CDC’s webpage for your destination to see what vaccines or medicines you may need and what diseases or health risks are a concern at your destination.

Make sure you are up-to-date on all of your routine vaccines . Routine vaccinations protect you from infectious diseases such as measles that can spread quickly in groups of unvaccinated people. Many diseases prevented by routine vaccination are not common in the United States but are still common in other countries.

Make an appointment with your healthcare provider or a travel health specialist  that takes place at least one month before you leave. They can help you get destination-specific vaccines, medicines, and information. Discussing your health concerns, itinerary, and planned activities with your provider allows them to give more specific advice and recommendations.

Common Diseases and Illness among VFR Travelers

Many VFR travelers assume they are immune to malaria if they were born or lived a long time in a country with malaria, but immunity can decrease after a person moves away. In some instances, VFR travelers have died of malaria after they returned to the United States.

If you are traveling to a country with malaria, talk with your health care provider about malaria prevention medication. Because you need to start taking malaria pills before you leave the United States, do not wait until you are in the country to purchase malaria medication. Visit CDC’s Malaria webpage for more information..

Take recommended medicines as directed. If your doctor prescribes medicine for you, take the medicine as directed before, during, and after travel. Counterfeit drugs are common in some countries, so only take medicine that you bring from home and make sure to pack enough for the duration of your trip, plus extra in case of travel delays. Learn more about traveling abroad with medicine .

Foodborne and diarrheal illness

Heading Home Healthy

VFR travelers may be more likely to get foodborne and diarrheal illnesses because of the places they visit and foods they eat. Generally, food that is cooked and served hot is safe to eat, and beverages from sealed containers are safe to drink. Avoid food served at room temperature, raw fruits, or raw vegetables (unless they can be peeled), tap water, and ice made from tap water. Wash your hands with soap and water. If soap and water are not available, use hand sanitizer containing at least 60% alcohol. See CDC’s webpage Choosing Safe Food and Drinks While Traveling for more information.

Hepatitis A and Typhoid fever

Some illnesses that often spread through contaminated food or drinks, such as hepatitis A and typhoid, can be prevented by vaccination. Ask your health care provider about getting vaccinated before traveling.

Waterborne Illnesses

VFR travelers may be exposed to contaminated or unclean water. When this water is used for drinking, cooking, washing food, preparing drinks, making ice, or brushing teeth, it can make you sick with diarrhea, vomiting, and stomach pain. When you swim or wade in this water, you can become ill. Learn how to avoid contaminated water during travel .

After Travel

stethoscope

If you traveled and feel sick, particularly if you have a fever, talk to a healthcare provider and tell them about your travel.

If you need medical care abroad, see Getting Health Care During Travel .

Speaking Part 1

1 do you often visit your relatives.

Yes, I do! I used to find it boring when I was younger, but now that I’m older, I cherish (enjoy/value) the time I have with my relatives. I plan to see different relatives every Sunday.

[do_widget id=custom_html-22]

2 What do you do when you visit them?

We usually keep it pretty simple. We tend to have a meal at one of our houses or just sit in the living room and talk. From time to time, we decide to go out to eat or to do something else, like maybe the cinema or the park.

3 When did you last visit relatives? what did you do?

Just this morning actually! I went over to bring my grandparents lunch, since they aren’t very mobile anymore. We ate chicken salad, then I helped them pay their bills online, and chatted.

4 Do you prefer visiting your relatives, or your friends?

I like both for different reasons. I would say I probably enjoy seeing my friends more because it’s a time to de-stress and have fun, whereas seeing family involves more stress and judgment. However, I think family is more important.

5 Do you take anything when you visit your relatives?

Of course! I always try to bring some flowers or some sort of contribution to the meal, as I’m not one who likes to show up empty-handed (with nothing).  I especially like to bring something to my relatives after a vacation, like a souvenir- such a keychain, magnet, or T-shirt.

6 Is it important to visit family members?

Absolutely. They are the ones who are there for you when no one else is. I believe we are nothing without family.

  • Cherish: enjoy/value Eg: I cherish my childhood photographs.
  • Empty handed: with nothing Eg: Her father came empty handed from the office
  • Contribution : a gift or payment to a common fund or collection  Eg: There was no contribution to the party
  • De-stress: to release body or mental tension Eg: This is a chance to de-stress your mind.
  • Souvenir: something kept as reminder Eg: It has been a memorable souvenir of  lost happiness.

SAMPLE ANSWERS

1.  (do you often visit your relatives).

(Answer)  Yes, I do.

(Give a reason for your answer)  I like many of my relatives who are very  compassionate,  lovely and friendly to me and among them I would pick my younger uncle as the best relative in terms of our mutual understanding,  closeness  and communications.

2. (What do you do when visiting relatives?)

(Answer)  There are a lot of activities.

(Give a reason for your answer)  We often discuss our family issues, our thoughts on  politics , religion, books writers, movies, music and on many other issues. In our big family, we share our books and recommend books to each other. Generally, adults also share  heartfelt  words to youngsters and advise them on how to behave  decently.

3.  (When was the last time you visited a relative?)

(Answer)  Well, it was just last week when I visited my uncle’s family and my grandparents, who  reside  with him in the countryside. We went for a short walk near the field after breakfast to relax in nature and  soak up  some much-needed Vitamin D, which is  necessary  for elderly people.

4. (Why do people visit relatives?)

(Answer)  For many reasons, I believe.

(Give a reason for your answer)  Simply hanging out with family that you don’t see all the time is great. You get a chance to catch up with everyone and figure out what they’re doing with their lives. You also get to laugh and just be weird because they don’t judge you for your  weirdness . Above all, the memories are the best when you’re with your family sitting around and  reminiscing about  things that you’ve done together.

Câu hỏi và Câu trả lời mẫu IELTS Speaking Part 1 cho chủ đề Relatives/ Visiting relatives

1. do you often visit your relatives (why).

Personally, I rarely stand a chance to visit my relatives but I do visit them a few times on special occasions such as Tet holiday and their birthdays. The subtle point is I am trying to mingle with the busy life in Hanoi which is quite far away from my hometown. That being said, the time I can spend on visiting them is quite limited.

Từ vựng hay:

  • Stand a chance (idiom) : to have a chance of success of doing something – Tiếng Việt: có cơ hội làm gì
  • The subtle point (noun phrase) : small but important point – Tiếng Việt: điều quan trọng
  • Mingle with (phrasal verb) : to mix or fit in well with a group of people – Tiếng Việt: hòa mình với

2. What do you do when you visit them?

Well, it depends. Mostly my relatives themselves prefer to spend time together by sitting around a table and enjoy our dinner party. Honestly speaking, I’m not a good cook but there would be no trouble for me to prepare some avocado salad with a so-called recipe for the party.

  • Prefer to (verb) : to like, choose , or want one thing rather than another – Tiếng Việt: thích cái gì hơn
  • So-called (adj) : introduce a new word or phrase that is not yet known – Tiếng Việt: tự phong, không chính thống

visit relatives

3. When was the last time you visited them? What did you do?

I’d say it’s a couple of months ago because the last time I visited them we were really in good harmony . I never feel drifted apart from them though I might not have seen them for several months. We took the time to dine out and shared about recent ups and downs , they gave me a lot of support and encouragement.

  • In good harmony (idiom) : agreeable or compatible with someone or something – Tiếng Việt: hòa hợp vui vẻ với ai
  • Drift apart from (phrasal verb) :   become less friendly , isolated from – Tiếng Việt: bị tách biệt, xa cách
  • Dine out (phrasal verb) : to go to a restaurant to eat your evening meal – Tiếng Việt: ăn tối bên ngoài
  • Ups and downs (idiom) : a mixture of good and bad things happens – Tiếng Việt: những giai đoạn thăng trầm

4. Do you prefer visiting your relatives, or your friends?

When it comes to choosing between relatives and friends, I believe relatives should be my priority. It’s obvious that visiting relatives will be an incredibly precious opportunity for all members, even your family, to gather and catch up with loved ones . My experience when visiting friends was quite hectic with loud music, drink and unaffordable parties, which made me feel extremely unrestrained .

  • When it comes to (phrase) : used to identify the specific topic that is being talked about – Tiếng Việt: khi nói đến vấn đề
  • Catch up with (phrasal verb) : talk to someone who has not seen for long time in order to find out what they have been doing – Tiếng Việt: bắt kịp, thăm hỏi
  • Hectic (adj) : very busy and fast – Tiếng Việt: vô cùng bận rộn, hối hả
  • Unrestrained (adj) :  not limited or controlled – Tiếng Việt: mất kiểm soát

5. Do you take anything when you visit your relatives?

As my relatives are getting older, they don’t really appreciate material gifts like money or clothes, instead they prefer to have someone cook a homemade meal for them. That’s the reason why I often drop by the supermarket and pick up some raw materials from their houses and get ready to serve in the kitchen .

  • Homemade meal (noun phrase) : meal made at home – Tiếng Việt: bữa ăn tại nhà
  • Drop by (phrasal verb) : visit – Tiếng Việt: ghé qua

The Kennedy family (with one notable absence) joins President Biden at the White House

visit relatives

WASHINGTON ― To mark St. Patrick's Day , America's most famous Irishman − President Joe Biden − hosted the family of America's first Irish-Catholic president.

But there was one notable absence that could hardly be ignored.

A White House visit Sunday by dozens of family members of President John F. Kennedy did not include Robert F. Kennedy Jr. , who is running as an independent against Biden in the 2024 presidential election.

"From one big Irish-Catholic family to another, it’s great to have the Kennedys here," Biden said in remarks during the St. Patrick's Day celebration that also included Prime Minister Leo Varadkar of Ireland.

After the event, Kerry Kennedy, the younger sister of Robert F. Kennedy Jr., posted a photo of the Kennedy clan at the White House with Biden kneeling in front.

Prep for the polls: See who is running for president and compare where they stand on key issues in our Voter Guide

"President Biden, you make the world better," she wrote. "Happy St. Patrick’s Day."

More: Kennedy family repudiates Robert Kennedy Jr. after Super Bowl 2024 ad mirrors JFK campaign

The visual served as a reminder that while Robert F. Kennedy continues his long-shot bid for the presidency, much of his family is firmly opposed to his candidacy.

Kerry Kennedy and three other siblings − former Rep. Joseph Kennedy II, Rory Kennedy and Kathleen Kennedy Townsend − came out in immediate opposition to Kennedy's third-party bid after he announced his independent run in October.

"Bobby might share the same name as our father, but he does not share the same values, vision or judgment, Robert F. Kennedy's siblings wrote. "Today's announcement is deeply saddening for us. We denounce his candidacy and believe it to be perilous for our country."

Joe Kennedy, grandson of Robert F. Kennedy and among those at the White House Sunday, was tapped by Biden as United States special envoy for Northern Ireland in 2022. Maria Shriver, another member of the Kennedy family, spoke Monday at the White House before Biden signed an executive order aimed at accelerating the study of women's health.

More: Donald Trump's campaign says Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. won't be his running mate pick

Biden considers Robert F. Kennedy, brother of John F. Kennedy − a former attorney general and a U.S. senator from New York until his assassination in 1968 − one of his political heroes. Biden even installed a bust of R.F.K. next to the fireplace in the Oval Office.

Although Robert F. Kennedy Jr. faces long odds in his presidential bid, the anti-vaccine activist is polling strongly enough to be a major spoiler in battleground states contested by Biden and Republican presumptive nominee Donald Trump. A USA Today-Suffolk University poll found Kennedy polling at 9% among registered voters nationally. The poll had Trump leading Biden 40%-38%.

Former President Barack Obama Meets with Belgian Royal Family

King Philippe and Princess Elisabeth welcomed Obama to Laeken Castle.

a group of people posing for a photo

According to the Brussels Times , Obama traveled to Belgium for a talk—titled " An Evening With President Barack Obama "—in Puurs-Saint-Amand, Antwerp. The talk is part of the technology festival, Supernova, organized by Flanders Technology and Innovation (FTI). The event, which took place last night, was "a moderated conversation about the challenges we're facing and his vision for the future."

As of this writing, President Obama did not post about his visit—his only social media post from yesterday features a snap of him and former First Lady Michelle Obama in Ireland, with the caption reading, "From the O’bama family to yours, we hope you have a happy St. Patrick’s Day!" (The song references a humorous folk song , written in 2008, that goes, 'O'Leary, O'Reilly, O'Hare and O'Hara There's no one as Irish as Barack O'Bama!')

Meanwhile, the Belgian royal family shared the snap of Elisabeth, Philippe, and Obama on their social media channels.

Princess Elisabeth , the heir to the Belgian throne, is currently a student at Oxford University, but was back home for break. The royal is in the last year of her bachelor's degree in History and Politics at Lincoln College at the University of Oxford. For the reception with Obama at the Laeken Castle, Princess Elisabeth opted for a chic, royal blue suit (the blazer is designed by Jigsaw).

Last year, the Duchess of Brabant (as Elisabeth is also known)—who turned 22 in October —took on a more prominent, public role within the Belgian royal family. She attended Prince Christian's 18th birthday gala in October; she joined her father at the royal wedding of Prince Hussein and Rajwa Al Saif in June; and attended the pre-coronation reception celebrating King Charles and Queen Camilla at Buckingham Palace in May.

This family-run bakery is closing after 30 years serving Phoenix. Here's how to say goodbye

visit relatives

Corrections & Clarifications: A previous version of this article had an incorrect location for the original bakery.

Karl's Quality Bakery in Sunnyslope is closing after 30 years at the end of March.

The owner, Christine Boerner, announced in an Instagram post dated March 25 : "Auf Wiedersehen and thank you for 30 years. It Has been an extraordinary journey filled with the aroma of love and the sweetness of shared moments. While our ovens may cool, the warmth of our bakery will forever linger in the hearts and taste buds of those we’ve had the honor to serve. With Love and Butter Always, the Karl's family."

The bakery was originally opened at the corner of Seventh and Dunlap avenues in 1994 by Karl Boerner, who emigrated from Germany .

After 20 years, Karl's daughter, Christine, who had worked at the shop as a child and hated baking, took over the bakery, moving it to the current location at the corner of Central and Dunlap avenues. She studied architecture before falling in love with chocolate and switching careers to train as a chocolatier and pastry chef in Switzerland.

Loyal customers responded with mixed emotions

Chef Silvana Esparza, who recently announced her restaurant's impending closure , commented: "Thank you. We should celebrate together. Congratulations." Christine replied: "you got it! That sounds like a good time!"

@nicholekmayberry wrote: "We lived on the street behind your Dunlap location when I was growing up. My sister @brittneyslayberry and I always used to ride our kick scooters before school to buy a cookie or on special occasions. This year is my 30th birthday and I can’t help but feel this is such a beautiful way to close out the end of this chapter of life. Thank you so much for all you have done for the community. @karls_bakery will always hold a special place in my childhood memories. ❤"

Boerner responded: "one of my favorite memories is food memories, we have raised many neighborhood kids on our cookies ! ❤️"

What's next for the bakery

According to the Instagram, another family-owned bakery is taking over the space.

Kate middleton seen in new video enjoying windsor farm shop with william, kate middleton new video shows her happy, healthy with william, exclusive 7.2k 3/18/2024 1:00 pm pt.

The Kate Middleton sighting that got reported on this week is real after all -- 'cause a new video of her during this outing has surfaced ... and TMZ's got a first look.

TMZ has obtained a clip that was taken of Kate Saturday while she and Prince William were visiting a business about a mile from their home in Windsor -- known as the Windsor Farm Shop -- where The Sun reported eyewitnesses saw them out and about this past weekend.

Onlookers felt she looked "happy, relaxed and healthy" as she strolled in the store -- a supermarket of sorts -- and the couple didn't seem to have a care in the world.

Their three kids weren't with them ... but The Sun also claimed they spent the first part of their Saturday watching the children play sports. At first, there was no real evidence to back up the report ... but now, the first actual visual of her here has surfaced, and it's 100% her.

As you see in this footage, obtained by TMZ, Kate looks relaxed in casual athletic wear ... rocking an all-black look with some pink trimming. Her gait is strong -- a good sign given her purported abdominal surgery. PW is right by her side as they walk out of the Farm Shop with bags in hand.

Nobody around looks to be bothering them ... and Kate, sure enough, does indeed look pretty cheerful here -- smiling wide and even carrying on a conversation with her husband.

One of the eyewitnesses who saw them, Nelson Silva , says ... "I noticed a couple choosing loaves of bread and the woman turned her face and I felt like I had seen the face before. It was familiar. I knew it from somewhere."

He adds, "I went to my car and as they came out of the shop I just filmed them. I think they walked out through a gate out of the grounds. They just vanished and I didn't see a car. I just wanted to share with my family footage and show just how normal they were."

Silva finishes ... "Kate looked happy and relaxed. They look happy just to be able to go to a shop and mingle. Kate looked relieved like it was a success going to a shop. It felt natural."

The couple was walking at a relatively brisk pace ... and Kate, on its face, seems to be okay. Frankly, it's as if nothing was ever wrong with her ... although, of course, we know she was in the hospital for a while for a serious procedure that took her out of commission.

The exact nature of her ailment was never made clear by Kensington Palace officials.

BTW, for all the skeptics who might not believe this was taken as it's been relayed to us -- we've delved into the metadata ... and there's no doubt, this was filmed on Saturday right near the Prince and Princess of Wales' home in Windsor. So yes, it's a legitimate video.

Like we said, this is the first time we've seen Kate out in public -- outside of a car, that is -- since December -- and now that we're seeing her in the wild, on her own two feet, ya gotta wonder if this will satisfy conspiracy theorists who have taken over TikTok.

Remember, the Palace says she underwent abdominal surgery in January -- and was scheduled to be sidelined until at least Easter. Despite this timeline ... that hasn't stopped people from floating jokes/conspiracy theories, which got gravely serious on Mother's Day.

Of course, we're referring to the Photoshop fail seen 'round-the-world ... which showed that Kate (or someone at Kensington Palace) tried to pull a fast one on the public. There were 16 alterations made to the photo ... and it's been debunked as a fake many times over.

Kate ended up copping to it herself ... albeit, in nothing but a social media statement. Lots of people felt she was falling on the sword and that the Palace was behind the edits.

After that botched job ... everyone thought something very serious was going on -- but now, we're seeing Kate out and about and seemingly fine.

Are you believing your lying eyes?

‘Big day for evil’: Former YouTuber Ruby Franke detailed how she abused her children in handwritten journal entries

Ruby Franke

Ruby Franke, a former YouTube family vlogger from Utah who was sentenced last month on child abuse charges , detailed months of abuse in handwritten journal entries released by prosecutors Friday.

In the heavily redacted entries, Franke repeatedly insisted that her son was possessed by a demon. In one entry from July 11, 2023, she wrote that it was a “big day for evil” and described an incident where her son was pushed into water and she held her hand over his nose and mouth.

She wrote that she did that to help the boy.

In another entry, Franke called her daughter “manipulative” and described how she forced the girl to stand in the rain for two hours.

In February, Franke received four separate prison sentences of one to 15 years each. Her business partner, Jodi Hildebrandt , received the same sentence.

Both women were arrested in August 2023  and pleaded guilty to four counts of second-degree aggravated child abuse after police found one of Franke’s sons emaciated with open wounds and bound with duct tape.

The boy had escaped Hildebrandt’s home to a neighbor’s house. One of Franke’s daughters was found in Hildebrandt’s home in a similar malnourished condition.

The journal entries, released by the Washington County Attorney’s Office, mainly focused on two of Franke’s six children. Officials redacted their names and identified the daughter, 9, as “E” and the son, 12, as “R.”

“R was told to stand in the sun w/his sun hat,” Franke wrote in the July 11, 2023, entry. “He is defiant. ... R, or I should say his demon, stays in the shade. I push R into the sun. R comes back. I come back with a cactus poker. When I poke his back to get in the sun R doesn’t even flinch. I poke him on the neck. He is in a trance & doesn’t appear to feel anything. Jodi taps him on the cheeks to wake him up.”

Franke also wrote that same day that her son was pushed into a pool and she held her hand “tightly over his nose & mouth.”

In a July 12, 2023, entry, Franke wrote that she cut her daughter’s hair off and “doused” her with water in the “dog wash.”

“E said she wanted to run away. Jodi told E she has no idea what is waiting for her,” Franke wrote.

Prosecutors also released police body camera video, photos and interrogation tapes.

In a home security video from Aug. 30, 2023, Franke’s son asked a neighbor if he could “do two favors.”

“Well, what are they?” the neighbor asked.

“Take me to the nearest police station,” the boy responded. “Well, actually just one is fine.”

The neighbor told the boy to have a seat on his front porch.

A second video showed the man on the phone as a woman assessed the boy’s injuries.

“He has duct tape ... there’s sores around them,” the man said. The woman said the boy needed immediate attention.

Prosecutors said that Franke and Hildebrandt were motivated by “religious extremism.”

“The women appeared to fully believe that the abuse they inflicted was necessary to teach the children how to properly repent for imagined ‘sins’ and to cast the evil spirits out of their bodies,” the Washington County Attorney’s Office said in a case summary .

The family became known for its popular and often controversial YouTube channel “8 Passengers,” where Franke documented her life with her husband, Kevin Franke, and their six children.

The channel had more than 2 million subscribers before it ended. Kevin Franke later filed for divorce after her arrest .

During her sentencing, Franke apologized to her children.

“I ... believed dark was light and right was wrong,” she said. “I would do anything in this world for you. I took from you all that was soft and safe and good.”

Hildebrandt said she hoped the children would be able to “heal physically and emotionally.”

“One of the reasons I did not go to trial is because I did not want them to emotionally relive the experience, which would have been detrimental to them,” she said. “My hope and prayer is that they will heal and move forward to have beautiful lives.”
