People like Laniel Smith, co-owner and operator of Marion Street Eatery in Winnipeg, found community and mentorship through Red River College while accelerating her career in tourism. “I’m really grateful that I took the program,” says Smith. “I was young and looking for an opportunity to learn and to grow in the industry, and the program was a perfect stepping stone for me to do that.” Sylvie Foidart, tourism coordinator at Economic Development Council for Manitoba Bilingual Municipalities (CDEM) and graduate of Université de Saint-Boniface’s tourism management program, found her first job in the tourism industry through education. “The program accelerated my career by at least five years,” says Foidart. “It really helped to create connections with industry members, and it gave me the foundational blocks and confidence I needed for the variety of work I do today. It was a great leap forward for my career.”

Hospitality and Tourism Management Diploma

School of Hospitality and Culinary Arts

About the manitoba tourism education college (mtec).

The Manitoba Tourism Education College is a not-for-profit private vocational school and an associated corporation of the Manitoba Tourism Education Council. The Manitoba Tourism Education Council was established in 1989 as a not-for-profit organization that receives provincial funding to assist the tourism industry in Manitoba remain sustainable, through training their managers, supervisors and employees. The Manitoba Tourism Education College was established to meet current and long-term employer needs by preparing future employees for positions in the tourism, hospitality and retail industries in Manitoba. This private vocational school will deliver six to eight week training programs plus a 30 hour practicum. Potential employees will be matched to employers, with the goal of future employment.

About Training Provider

The Manitoba Tourism Education College (M.T.E.C) was established in 2014 as a not-for-profit associated corporation of the Manitoba Tourism Education Council. The college is a registered private vocational institution and regulated by the Province of Manitoba.
The college is also a federally approved Designated Learning Institution, which permits it to train international students.
The Manitoba Tourism College provides six, seven and eight week training programs that were developed to quickly get future employees working in the industry.
The college also delivers ten month training programs that prepare graduates to work in the hospitality industry as well as many other industries in Manitoba.

The Mission of the Manitoba Tourism Education College is to continually provide the Manitoba Tourism industry, and beyond, with a well-trained workforce by providing short and long-term comprehensive training programs.

Food and Beverage Server Training Program

Program start date(s) - may 13, 2024.

Become a food and beverage server with this 6-week training program located in Winnipeg, Manitoba. You’ll learn to anticipate customer needs and act as the main connection point between customers and the kitchen staff. Servers often work at restaurants, cafes, coffee shops and other eating establishments.

The program includes 6 weeks of classroom training plus a 30 hour work practicum. (212 hours)

Your Training Investment:

MTEC uses emerit National Occupational Standards. After completing the Food and Beverage Server Program, students will be able to demonstrate the following skills and duties and develop the knowledge and attitude to be considered competent in this occupation:

Our curriculum is current and relevant to the demands of the job. We use emerit National Occupational Standards to develop our curriculum. These standards are set by industry professionals and describe the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to be considered competent in an occupation.

Interactive classes

Our small, interactive classes offer students an opportunity to learn directly from our friendly and helpful trainers. Our trainers possess extensive experience and expertise in training individuals currently working in the industry in Manitoba. Students also get the chance to put their new skills to the test in a work practicum placement.

Modern facility

Prior learning recognition

Students who have previously graduated from one MTEC program will be given credit for prior learning and are eligible for a reduced rate to enroll in any subsequent programs.

Student support

We provide support for any students who require additional assistance during and after the training programs. All students registered in a training program also have access to free career counselling.
