Female tandem paraglider

Why do you need insurance for paragliding?

Paragliding is classified as Grade 7 sport, which is our highest risk group. Therefore, our Paragliding Insurance is available only to those undertaking this activity under instruction – for example as part of a training course or as a tandem paraglide with an instructor.

People tend to associate paragliding as being a highly dangerous sport which is true to a certain degree because accidents can lead to very serious or fatal injuries. However, the most common paragliding injuries are sprained, fractured or broken legs and ankles.

This allows for multiple trips throughout the year (capped at 30 days or 70 days per trip) and paragliding cover on each trip. Medical expenses, repatriation & helicopter rescue are all included. You can also choose a single trip policy, for a short-term policy with the extreme activity pack included, to cover a one-off trip.

Personal Accident cover isn’t quite what it sounds like. If you have an accident and fall over and break your wrist, that’s covered under normal Medical Expenses. Personal Accident is basically: Loss of sight, loss of limb or permanent disablement.

What the Policy says under Section B. Personal Accident:

In the event of the Insured Person sustaining bodily injury arising wholly and exclusively from violent accidental external and visible means which injury shall solely and independently of any other cause result in his/her death or disablement within twelve calendar months of the injury, the Insurer hereby agrees to pay up to the amount shown in the Table of Benefits applicable to the type of policy purchased and shown on the Validation Certificate.

Provided that:

  • A) the death benefit payable is reduced to £1,000 if the Insured Person is under 16 years of age or 66 years of age or over at the time of death B) the total compensation in respect of any one Insured Person shall not exceed £10,000 for BUDGET Policies, £15,000 forSTANDARD Policies or £25,000 for PREMIER Policies.

Definitions

Loss of Limbs : loss or severance at or above the wrist or ankle or total permanent loss of use of an entire arm or leg.

Loss of Sight : total and irrecoverable loss of sight which shall be

considered as having occurred:

  • a) in both eyes if your name is added to the Register of Blind Persons on the authority of a fully qualified ophthalmic specialist.
  • b) in one eye if the degree of sight remaining after correction is 3/60 or less on the Snellen Scale.

Permanent Total Disablement: A disability which has lasted for at least 12 months from which the Insurer believes the Insured Person will never recover and which prevents them from carrying out any gainful occupation for which they are reasonably qualified by way of training, education or experience.

Special Condition

If an Insured Person was already disabled before the bodily injury or already had a condition which is gradually getting worse, the Insurer may reduce their payment. Any reduced payment will be based on their medical assessment of the difference between:

  • the disability after the bodily injury; and
  • the extent to which the disability is affected by the disability or condition before the Accident.

To add any of our Activity Packs, just follow the Quote form - to stage 3 - there you will find all of the optional extras.

The Additional Mountain Rescue section of cover is a specific level of cover that takes effect when helicopter rescue is deemed necessary by the local Rescue Authorities due to a non-medical emergency such as natural disasters or adverse weather conditions.

This section of cover does not apply to Medically Necessary helicopter evacuations - these costs are covered under the Medical & Repatriation section of cover.

Sport Travelling

Paragliding Travel Insurance

Paragliding travel insurance is an important element that guarantees safety and peace of mind while engaging in this sport. Tandem paragliding is a form of active recreation where athletes fly on a specially designed non-motorized glider and enjoy a bird’s-eye view of the ground. To participate, it is necessary not only to be able to use the required equipment but also to get travel insurance for paragliding.

Paragliding Equipment

A paraglider accelerates down a mountainside and performs a flight in a bright orange paraglider against a backdrop of a lake town and a pine forest

The main piece of equipment is the paraglider. It is a special wing-shaped kite that consists of a lightweight, foldable fabric with a soft wing inflated through air intakes. To control the flight direction, the pilot holds special lines attached to the paraglider and moves them to the right or left for turning.

For protection during the flight, a paraglider wears:

  • A harness with attachments for the glider;
  • A protective helmet;
  • Special goggles and gloves that provide protection against dust and other small particles.

To determine the current location, the pilot needs to have a GPS navigator, compass, or another tool that helps detect their position in the air.

Insurance Features

Soaring in the air, admiring the landscapes of Europe, the United Kingdom, or Australia is a dream for many travelers. However, such holiday carries a significant risk of injury during a vacation. It is necessary to ensure your safety and arrange paragliding insurance abroad.

Let’s consider the features of paragliding in different countries:

a paraglider plans to fly a tricolor paraglider against a backdrop of incredibly beautiful views of snowy mountains, forests and lakes

Travel insurance that covers paragliding is suitable for both single trips and multi-trip journeys. Insurance coverage may include the following services:

  • Medical expenses;
  • Evacuation of the injured;
  • Compensation for damage to third parties.

Annual travel insurance is the optimal solution for those who spend a lot of time traveling. The cost of such insurance depends on the country the tourist will visit and their personal goals. A cheaper option would be single-trip insurance, which covers only one trip.

The best paragliding travel insurance can be purchased online. This allows you to study customer reviews, compare prices, and choose the best insurance policy.

Before purchasing insurance, carefully review its terms and check if it suits your needs.

To purchase paragliding travel insurance, you need to provide a document confirming your identity and provide details of your trip.

Depending on the chosen policy, paragliding travel insurance can cover various risks, including medical expenses related to injuries and illnesses, civil liability, and equipment protection in case of loss or damage.

15 Ultimate Tandem Paragliding Tips for an Epic Adventure

T andem paragliding and other extreme sports such as mountain biking, skydiving and river rafting are often epic adventures that top the bucket lists of adventure seekers around the world. While the thought of such activities makes many travelers cringe, being able to say, "I did that!" is quite an accomplishment.

Sometimes the hardest part is actually signing up for your chosen epic adventure. I'm here to be your cheerleader.

Come on. Take the plunge (pun intended). You can do it!

15 Ultimate Tandem Paragliding Tips

What do you need to prepare as a first time paraglider? Let's dive in and find out!

1. The First Time Paraglider Should be Mentally Prepared

A couple of months before our 25th anniversary trip to Italy and Switzerland , I happened to mention to Chris that I might possibly, would maybe consider   paragliding  with him from Mount Pilatus above Lucerne, Switzerland .

Chris ran with the idea and  promptly  began to research and find a reputable tandem paragliding company . He made reservations for the both of us before I had a chance to change my mind!

My mental preparation meant that I did not allow myself time to think or be nervous about being a first time paraglider... at all.

On the morning of our epic adventure, Chris and I met up with Marcel and Werner, our tandem paragliding guides. For me, NOT dwelling on the idea of running toward the edge of a mountain and jumping off was my best mental preparation.

Have you ever seen this great quote from Benjamin Mee from We Bought A Zoo ? Perhaps it should become your mantra as you prepare!

“You know, sometimes all you need is 20 seconds of insane courage, just literally 20 seconds of embarrassing bravery, and I promise you something great will come of it.”

Turns out, there was nothing to worry about and my flight with Marcel was awesome. I even got to steer the glider!

2. Check Your Insurance to Ensure You Are Covered for Extreme Sports

You will want to explore travel insurance supplements to your conventional travel insurance as many travel insurance plans exclude hazardous sports such as paragliding . Tandem paragliding travel insurance is a necessity for anyone who will be participating in a paragliding adventure when they travel . You can purchase a travel insurance plan that covers extreme sports.

3. Choose a Reputable Company

"The FREEMINDS Paraglide crew is a group of professional tandem pilots who all have completed extensive training according to the guidelines of the Swiss Hang Gliding Association and the Federal Office for Civil Aviation. We all fly only with current, certified annually and professionally tested material and are insured by the Swiss Hang Gliding Association. Our Team can rely on the experience of several thousand tandem flights with happy passengers."

As with any adventure, excursion or vacation rental DO YOUR DUE DILIGENCE!

  • Ask for recommendations
  • Conduct research online
  • Read through online reviews.

Your safety always comes first.

4. Plan a Tandem Paragliding Experience

There are many destinations that offer tandem paragliding adventures around the world. Not sure if paragliding is offered where you will be visiting? Do a little research. You can always search for paragliding excursions on Viator to see if there is an epic adventure offered.

5. Trust and Listen to Your Paragliding Tandem Guide

If you are a first time paraglider, you may be wondering, "Is paragliding safe?"

Yes. Do your research and select a reputable company with many positive online reviews. Don't simply rely on the advice of others. Check the certification and training requirements. If you work with a reputable company, you can trust that your tandem guide has had many hours of training.

Listen carefully to your tandem guide.  You should be able to watch them lay out and set up the paraglider. Once they are ready, they will instruct you on:

  • How to take off, ie., when they say "RUN" you run.
  • Landing procedures.
  • How to maneuver the paraglider.

Pay attention and again, ask questions if you’re unsure about anything.

6. Your Guide Will Bring All of the Necessary Paragliding Equipment

Your guide will come prepared with all of the paragliding equipment that you will need:

  • A paragliding canopy or wing
  • A reserve parachute
  • A pair of gloves
  • A variometer device for indicating an aircraft's rate of climb or descent
  • They may also bring an extra jacket or two
  • A GoPro to take pictures and record portions of your flight

7. Wear Sunglasses

As with any outdoor experience, sunglasses are essential.

8. Wear Closed Toed Shoes

This is primarily a safety issue and secondly a warmth issue. Your guide will not want your birkenstocks impeding your run off the mountain or causing you to fumble your future landing. Also, sandals and flip flops would have a much greater chance of falling off mid-flight. Sandals are a safety hazard for you and the people on the ground.

9. Wear Pants and Long Sleeves

Even on the most beautiful day, remember that temperatures are cooler at higher altitudes and you will feel the wind! In your epic adventure, you will soar above the earth... all this thanks to the wind needed for paragliding!

Even on a warm summer day, pants are recommend. Being prepared will help you to enjoy your tandem paragliding the most.

10. Wear a Warm Jacket

Dress appropriately for the weather.  You don’t want to freeze during your flight. Even if the weather seems warm on the ground, you will be much cooler soaring through the sky. Layers are your friend here.

Chris and I didn’t bring puffy jackets for this end of summer trip, but would have appreciated the warmth while paragliding. We were grateful that our guides provided extra jackets as another layer.

11. Make Sure Your Weight Meets the Minimum Standards for Paragliding

As with many epic adventures, weight limits exist for paragliding. In fact, they are critical to a safe takeoff, flight and landing as weight affects your guide's ability to control the paraglider and offer a safe flight.

You will be asked to share your weight.

The tandem paragliding weight limit for the passenger ranges between 242 – 264 pounds (110-120 kilograms). This allows for a combined maximum limit of 485 – 529 pounds (220-240 kilograms) for the pilot, the passenger, and any equipment being carried.

12. Do Not Take Drugs or Drink Before Your Flight

Drugs and alcohol are not a good mix with paragliding.

Drugs and alcohol will impair your judgment, dull your reflexes, and have a significant impact on your coordination. Even as a tandem rider, you have responsibilities during your flight. When you are under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol, your ability to respond appropriately to the instructions of your tandem instructor are diminished. You are substantially increasing the risk to you and your tandem guide.

13. Stay Calm and Enjoy the Experience

Take a deep breath, run fast to soar off the mountain, and  enjoy the ride!  Will you be nervous as a first time paraglider? Maybe. That’s okay.

Remember that paragliding is safe and exhilarating when done correctly. These paragliding tips are aimed to help you embrace the adventure. You'll experience stunning views, feel the wind, see nature, and enjoy the freedom of flying like a bird.

14. Legs Out Straight on the Landing

If you notice the tandem pack in the picture above, the equipment comes with substantial padding to soften your landing. That being said, when you are landing, your guide will most likely ask you to put your feet out straight for the landing.

15. Be Flexible—Your Flight is Dependent on the Weather

Be aware that your flight is dependent on the weather conditions. Your guide will monitor the wind and weather conditions prior to your take off.

What To Do With Your Belongings

Chris and I spent the night a Hotel Pilatus Kulm prior to our paragliding experience. Wonder what we did with our luggage and backpacks? We left it with the clerks at the reception desk on Mt. Pilatus and they sent all of our gear down on the gondolas for us to pick up once we landed. Cool right?

Once we landed in the field next to the gondola at the base of the mountain in Kriens, Marcel walked with us to show us where to retrieve our luggage. What an  epic adventure !

Obviously your experience will be different, but there should be accommodations made for your belongings while on your paragliding adventure. If you aren't sure, don't be afraid to ask.

Who Should Not Paraglide

Typically, people with certain medical conditions should not participate in an extreme sport such as paragliding. This includes people who have or are:

  • Heart problems
  • High blood pressure
  • Expecting mothers

Unsure if tandem paragliding is the right adventure for you? Be sure to consult your medical professional. Their advice supersedes any information I share!

If paragliding is an adventure that you have considered, take the leap, create memories, and experience the magic of flight. We would definitely paraglide again.

Travel insurance for paragliding and parasailing

Planning to paraglide on your travels find travel insurance that covers you in flying colours..

In this guide

Who provides cover for paragliding and parasailing?

What is the difference between paragliding and parasailing, top places to paraglide in the world, top places to parasail in the world, when won’t you be covered, am i covered for hang gliding, paragliding and parasailing safety checklist.

Destinations

Paragliding or parasailing over a foreign land can be a visual experience like no other. However, before you fly up and away make sure your travel insurance covers for medical expenses if anything goes wrong.

How do I make sure I'm covered?

If your policy says it covers a range of sports including paragliding, it’s important to check if there are any conditions that affect when cover will apply. Conditions may include:

  • You must be a passenger. You will need to be paragliding in tandem with a licensed instructor and be a passenger rather than in control of the aircraft.
  • A licensed operator is required. The paragliding equipment and service must be provided by a licensed commercial operator.
  • You may need to buy an extra sports option. You may need to take certain steps when taking out your policy, such as applying for cover over the phone or purchasing a special adventure sports pack.
  • Understand what your policy covers. There is a difference between paragliding and parasailing and some travel insurance brands may only cover parasailing.

Note: This information was last updated August 2022

If you’re thinking of paragliding or parasailing while on holiday, be aware that travel insurers apply different definitions of what constitutes paragliding and what constitutes parasailing. Check with your insurer to confirm whether you will be covered before you participate in either sport.

There are certain situations when you won’t be able to receive any cover from your travel insurer for paragliding or parasailing. Some of these are specific to the sport itself, including:

  • No cover if you don’t satisfy all policy conditions, such as flying in tandem with a licensed instructor when you paraglide
  • No cover unless you specifically arrange for the sport to be covered when arranging your policy
  • No cover for personal liability while paragliding
  • No cover if you operate the equipment

In other cases, you may not be covered for paragliding-related claims under some of the general exclusions of your policy, such as:

  • If the insurer excludes paragliding from cover altogether
  • If your claim arises because you are under the influence of alcohol or drugs

Make sure you read the fine print of your policy to work out when you will and will not be covered.

Hang gliding is a similar activity to paragliding but the main difference is the design of the aircraft that makes it harder to control than paragliders. For this reason, many travel insurance policies will exclude hang gliding.

  • Paragliding requires a high cliff for launching and the right conditions . Paragliders should never take off into winds over 25km/h unless they are highly trained and experienced. Paragliding should also never be undertaken in wet conditions.
  • Life jackets if the vehicle is a boat . Life jackets are essential if the sport is being done over water.
  • Route should have no obstructions. There should be no obstructions in the vehicle’s path.
  • Wear a helmet. All paragliding and parasailing participants should wear a helmet to prevent injury.
  • Research the provider. Before hiring a tandem glider pilot, do your research and make sure you will be taking to the air with someone you can trust. Find a licensed instructor with a licensed commercial paragliding provider. Ask the instructor how long they’ve been flying for, how many tandems they’ve done and what advice they can give to beginners. Watching them take off first is another good way to gauge their skills.

The Emergency Assistance Company will then arrange the Rescue and Medical Assistance on your behalf.

At JS Travel Insurance, we can cover paragliding (amateur) competitions (Europe only) under a specialist policy.

We offer the policies on a non-professional basis. Professional is if you are being paid or receiving any element of sponsorship, fees or prize money exceeding £500.

Solo Paragliding: Flights if experienced or qualified.

Tandem Paragliding: Flights as a Passenger or recreationally as a Passenger or Pilot.

Paragliding Courses / Training: If under the supervision of a Qualified Guide / Instructor.

  • Check the weather before you fly. Wind and Thermal conditions.
  • Learn slowly, and don't be over-ambitious when you start Paragliding.
  • Check your equipment thoroughly before you fly to ensure it is not faulty.
  • Use a Tracking Device such as a Garmin IReach .
  • Advise friends, fellow flyers and local clubs exactly where you will fly.
  • Make sure you get your training at BHPA Registered School .

Common Injuries

In general, the sport's safety is directly influenced by the skill and sense of the Pilot. A safe Pilot will not fly at sites that are too challenging for their abilities and will not pass on days when the weather is turbulent.

Paragliding accidents occur more frequently when a Pilot is in a foreign country because they are less familiar with the area and climate.

The great exposure of the Pilot's legs and feet to the ground during landing can result in strains, fractures, and broken bones if landings are misjudged or impacted by adverse weather conditions.

Fatalities in Paragliding are rare, but when they do happen, it is often because the Pilot was attempting to push themselves past their limits for a more exciting flight or another goal or due to inexperience when a Pilot is doing something that is strictly warned against.

Paragliding Insurance

Travel insurance for just about every sport you can think of… including parapenting and paragliding.

Travel Insurance for Parapenting

It’s why Dogtag is the travel insurer for people who take their travel and their safety seriously.

Dogtag Adrenaline Fueled Travel Insurance

We’ve covered parapenting from the very start under our Extreme sports cover level so be sure to select Extreme on your way through the quote application process. Other than that there’s nothing else to do, you’re covered for Parapenting or Paragliding as well as all of the other sports listed in the sport list – except winter sports, which require the Winter Sports upgrade.

Cover Restrictions As with a few other sports, there are restrictions on the cover. With Parapenting and Paragliding, there’s no cover for Personal Accident and Personal Liability.

Why is this and what does it mean? With some sports (other examples are offshore sailing and mountaineering) the fact that you are deliberately exposing yourself to the danger of permanent disability means that underwriters withdraw the compensation for permanent disability. However, this does not mean that your Emergency Medical treatment cover is affected – you’ll still be covered for your medical costs, you just won’t be compensated for the disability. Likewise, because some sports have a high dependency upon the inter-dependability of participants, one person’s mistake can have a knock-on effect that can injure other people or their property – this is why Personal Liability cover is removed.

You can find some other useful information regarding sports that we cover in our Sports Information Library .

Paragliding vs Hang Gliding

According to the USHPA , there are 3 key differences between paragliding and hang gliding. They revolve around transport, set-up, and flight. Hang gliders typically weigh more than paragliders and require a roof rack to transport on a vehicle whereas paragliders can be carried in a backpack and fit inside a vehicle. As far as set-up goes, hang gliders take longer to set up and prepare to launch (about 15-20 minutes) compared to paragliders (5-10 minutes). Lastly, hang gliders are capable of faster speeds, improved glide ratios, and the ability to fly in stronger conditions as compared to paragliders. However, due to their lower speed, paragliders can typically land in much smaller fields.

Tandem Paragliding: All You Need To Know

A tandem paraglide is the perfect way to experience the joy of free flight and see the world from a brand-new perspective .

Are you considering booking your first tandem paragliding flight but feel a little nervous about what to expect? Never fear! We have answered all your burning questions about paragliding tandem.

What Is Paragliding?

Paragliding is an adventure sport and a form of free flight .

Paragliding pilots cover vast distances and climb to great heights simply by using naturally occurring forms of lifting air, known as ridge lift or thermals . You can soar freely in the sky and sightsee as you’ve never done before, giving you a whole new meaning to the phrase “a bird’s eye view.”

The aircraft, known as a paraglider , consists of two layers of special hard-wearing fabric that uses ram-air technology to maintain the airfoil shape required for flight. The pilot is connected to the paraglider by several lines between the wing and the pilot’s harness.

For more details about how a paraglider flies and the equipment involved, see our articles on what paragliding is and the top FAQ about paragliding .

What Is Tandem Paragliding?

In tandem paragliding, the paraglider pilot flies with a passenger .

To do this, a larger paraglider wing is used (one specially designed to support the weight of two people and all their equipment). The wing is attached to two interconnected harnesses – one for the experienced pilot and another for the passenger (placed in front of the pilot).

Tandem paragliding companies are often located in stunningly scenic , mountainous areas . Tandem paragliding is a wonderful way to enjoy the view from a new perspective while experiencing the thrill of flying like a bird.

tandem paragliding travel insurance

Besides a short brief from your paragliding pilot (before your flight), you don’t need special skills or lessons to be a tandem passenger . Your pilot will tell you exactly what will happen before your flight, how you need to run a few steps during take-off and keep running until you’re no longer touching the ground.

The paraglider pilot will have complete control of the paraglider at all times (you may get lucky and be able to take control for a short time while flying!). You’ll be able to chat with your pilot throughout the flight, and they will be happy to answer any questions you may have.

OK, now you know what tandem paragliding is, but what does it feel like, and is tandem paragliding safe? Read on to find out more.

Your Tandem Paraglide: All About the Experience

What does paragliding feel like.

Paragliding is often a gentler, calmer experience than most people may expect .

When you picture paragliding, you may have visions of jumping head-first off a cliff and having that stomach-flipping feeling you get on a rollercoaster as you plummet toward the earth. However, the reality is that paragliding feels like you’re floating effortlessly through the sky , unlike falling .

To be more specific about how you feel while paragliding , let’s break down each stage of the process:

tandem paragliding travel insurance

  • Take off. Before take-off, you’ll be standing on a hill or mountain, facing forward, with your pilot and paraglider behind you. As the pilot inflates the paraglider, you’ll feel a backward tug on your harness, and you may need to take a step or two backward. Then, the pilot will control the paraglider and give you the signal to run forward. As the paraglider starts flying, you’ll feel an upward tug on your harness. It is essential to keep your legs down until you are completely clear of the ground.

tandem paraglider flight

  • Flight. Once you’re clear of the ground, the pilot will guide you in sitting back in your harness to get more comfortable. Then, the bliss of flight! There is nothing like it. You’ll feel the air rush over your face, and it may be a bit disconcerting– after all, you’re hanging out in a comfortable chair while suspended in the air. Next, the pilot will likely ask you if you’d like to experience some higher-adrenaline maneuvers or possibly if you’d like to take the controls yourself (this depends on the pilot and weather conditions).
  • Landing. As you get closer to the ground, your pilot will let you know to get ready for landing. Depending on the pilot and weather conditions, they will likely tell you to keep your legs tucked up away from the ground as you come into land or to keep your legs down and prepare to run again. Don’t worry about the landing; you won’t hit the ground with a thud. Landing a paraglider feels like taking a large step down.

How Safe Is Tandem Paragliding?

Paragliding is an extreme sport involving aviation. Therefore there are always risks involved.

However, you can mitigate these risks by booking your tandem paraglide through a reputable company that only employs highly-experienced paragliding pilots who carry all the required ratings to fly tandem paragliders commercially.

tandem-paraglide-safety

Paragliding equipment needs to be inspected regularly for airworthiness , so don’t be afraid to ask questions about the age or condition of the equipment if you feel uneasy about anything. Your safety and well-being are paramount, and the pilot should be able to answer any questions you have without hesitation.

For even more peace of mind , or if you’re interested in learning to paraglide solo , you could book a flight with a paragliding pilot who is not only tandem rated but is also a paragliding instructor . Instructors have years of experience, thousands of hours of airtime, and they will be able to answer all of your questions about learning to paraglide solo.

Flying with a paragliding instructor is probably the safest way to experience tandem paragliding .

Is it Scary to Paraglide?

It is natural to feel nervous before attempting any new activity– paragliding included– but most people find that paragliding is not as scary as expected .

If you’re feeling nervous, let your pilot know, and they will do all they can to ensure a smooth, calm paragliding flight, making only gentle turns. On the other hand, if you are a thrill-seeker and the weather conditions are pleasant, your pilot will be more than happy to oblige by performing more dynamic moves to give you that exciting adrenaline rush.

The Nitty-Gritty of Booking Your Tandem Paraglide

So, you’ve got the basics of what is involved in tandem paragliding, and now you want to get down to business and book that flight. Keep reading to learn more!

The cost of a tandem paraglide varies depending on where you’re flying , if there are any additional transport costs involved in getting you to and from take-off/landing, and if the pilot gives you an SD card of any GoPro footage (sometimes the cost of the SD card is separate).

To give you an idea about what to expect , the following prices (converted to USD and valid in July 2022) are quoted by some companies based in popular tandem paragliding destinations around the world:

  • $175 for an instructional tandem flight in Torrey Pines, California
  • $150 for 25–30 minutes in Oludeniz, Turkey
  • $120 for a thermal flight in Annecy, France
  • $80 to paraglide in Cape Town, South Africa
  • $107 for a 50–60 minute cross-country flight in Sarangkot, Nepal
  • $147 for an aerobatic flight in Queenstown, New Zealand
  • $261 for a sunset flight over the lake in Interlaken, Switzerland

What Is the Weight Limit for Tandem Paragliding?

The maximum weight limit for tandem paragliding is around 220 lb (100 kg ).

Weight is, unfortunately, an essential consideration in paragliding because the paragliding canopy needs to be able to safely support the weight of the pilot, passenger, and all additional equipment.

Fitness, Age, and Disability: Who Cannot Do Tandem Paragliding?

You do not need to be very fit to tandem paraglide. You just need to be able to run a few steps, be fit enough to carry a rucksack and be able to withstand minor trips/falls without sustaining injury.

Children as young as four or six years old can go tandem paragliding as long as their parent or guardian signs a consent form. This age limit may vary depending on your region.

You cannot book a tandem paraglide if you are pregnant. Depending on the tandem paragliding company, you may also be unable to book a tandem flight if you have certain medical conditions , such as a heart condition , epilepsy , or a bone disorder .

Paragliding pilots are eager to help people with all abilities achieve their dream of flight , so more and more pilots are trained to cater to people with disabilities or physical impairments . Especially at places such as Project Airtime in the United States or the Flyability initiative in the United Kingdom.

What to Expect on the Day of Your Tandem Paraglide

Alright, so you’ve taken the plunge and booked that tandem paraglide!

You’re ready to fly with the eagles and hope to document this once-in-a-lifetime experience, but can you take your phone, and what should you wear? We’ve answered your questions about what to expect on the much-anticipated day.

What Do I Need To Prepare for Paragliding?

Your paragliding pilot will provide all the necessary equipment you need for your tandem flight, but the following tips will help ensure you have the best possible experience:

  • Ensure you arrive at the meeting point on time– preferably a little early. Because paragliding is so weather dependent, the tandem pilots are likely to be very booked up on a good flying day, so you don’t want to be late and lose your spot. A few admin tasks need to be done before your flight: your tandem pilot will require you to complete some forms, get your helmet fitted correctly, brief you on safety and what to expect, etc. It’s best not to feel rushed during these preflight steps.
  • Be sure to be well-fed and hydrated before your flight. Depending on the weather and location, you may spend a fair amount of time waiting for ideal conditions or transport to or from the take-off/landing, so be prepared– you don’t want to be too woozy/dehydrated to enjoy your tandem paraglide. In other words, pitching up for your flight after a big night out with no breakfast may not be the best idea!
  • Apply sunscreen. Ditto, as for the above– you may be standing around in the sun for a good few hours and not even realize you’re burning because of your excitement.
  • Leave your valuables at home. Ideally, have a friend come along and hold your bag/keys/phone/wallet during your flight. The tandem pilots may not be able to store your valuables for you. If you don’t have any non-flying friends with you, be sure to wear clothing with zipped pockets so that nothing valuable falls out during your flight.

what to wear tandem paragliding

What Do I Wear for Paragliding?

For the safest and most comfortable tandem paragliding experience, you should wear:

  • Hiking/walking shoes: Preferably with some ankle support and cushioning in the sole. Open-toed sandals should be avoided because they could accidentally come off during flight or get caught up in rocky terrain during take-off.
  • Long-sleeved top and long pants: These items will protect your arms and legs from the sun and also from any grazes or scrapes during take-off or landing (such injuries are very unlikely, but minor accidents do happen, for instance, if you trip on a rock while running during take-off).
  • Layers: Arrive at your tandem paragliding session prepared for all weather conditions. It may be very warm while waiting for your turn to fly, but do not underestimate how chilly you may feel once at altitude.
  • Secure pocket: As mentioned above, it’s a good idea to wear something that has a zipped, secure pocket for essentials (such as your car keys) that you need to take with you on your flight.

Can I Bring My Phone to Go Paragliding?

This is one of those times you should rather leave your phone behind and live in the moment .

No matter how careful you are, you may accidentally drop your phone while flying, and the tandem pilots won’t accept liability for any loss or damage to your belongings. However, don’t worry, because your pilot will be flying with a GoPro, so those precious memories will be recorded for you.

tandem paragliding camera

How Do You Use a GoPro While Paragliding?

Tandem pilots generally fly with a GoPro attached to an extendable selfie stick , with the camera recording even before you take off.

The camera will be mounted securely on the pilot’s harness . Once you’re in flight, the pilot will extend the selfie stick, move the camera around for different angles, and hand it to you so that you can capture that perfect selfie moment.

If you wish to bring your GoPro on your flight, you will need to discuss this with your pilot beforehand. Many tandem paragliding companies do not allow their clients to bring their cameras.

If you are allowed to bring a camera, your pilot will insist that you use a safety harness/mount for it– helmet mounts are usually forbidden due to the risk of hooking the paraglider’s lines.

As we’ve discussed, tandem paragliding is an ideal way to get a taste of free flight . It is a truly wonderful sport with something for everyone: great views, the serenity of floating through the sky, and just a dash of adrenaline (or more than a dash, if you’re after something more aerobatic ).

All extreme sports involve some risks. But you can put your mind at ease by booking your tandem paraglide through a reputable company that hires experienced, fully qualified paragliding pilots .

Paragliding is also one of the most accessible forms of flying. You don’t need to be particularly fit or have any special skills or equipment to go paragliding. A tandem paraglide won’t break the bank either; you can expect to pay somewhere around $100–$200 for an experience of a lifetime.

We hope this article has answered any lingering doubts about tandem paragliding and that you’re feeling inspired to book that tandem paraglide!

Tandem Paragliding FAQ’s

Have you always been a bit curious about paragliding? Or are you keen to try something new and exciting while on holiday? Tandem paragliding is a great way to get a taste of paragliding, have some fun, without undertaking extensive training or spending lots of money of gear.

Here are some answers to the most common questions we are asked about tandem paragliding. Enjoy!

What is Tandem Paragliding?

Tandem paragliding involves two people, usually a novice and an instructor, flying in the air with a parachute-like wing. The paraglider is similar to a regular paraglider however the harness is designed for two people, with the passenger positioned at the front. The instructor sits at the rear and navigates the paraglider. The passenger is only required to aid in the launch by running in unison with the pilot.

As no licence or prior training is required, tandem paragliding is a great way for the average person to try paragliding. You’ll often see paragliding offered at mountain or beachside holiday destinations where people are looking to try something new and exciting.

Is Tandem Paragliding Scary?

When it’s your first time trying something, it’s not uncommon to feel a bit scared. However, in comparison to other extreme pursuits such as skydiving or bungee jumping, tandem paragliding isn’t very scary. Once you’ve left the ground it won’t take you long to feel safe and comfortable. Many people actually find it very relaxing and enjoy taking in the view.

One common misconception is that paragliding involves jumping off a cliff. This is what makes other bungee jumping or diving from heights scary. The reality is that only experienced pilots jump off cliffs. In tandem paragliding you’ll be launching on a hill where you and the pilot will perform a short run until you achieve lift.

Most tandem paragliding flights are short in duration (15 minutes to 1 hour), enough to give you a taste and a hunger for more. If you have a severe phobia of heights, you may be scared of tandem paragliding. If not, come on and give it a try! If you find that once you’re in the air that you feel scared and wish to discontinue the flight, tell your pilot and they will land as soon as it’s safe to.

Are There Any Good Places for Tandem Paragliding Near Me?

There are many good places for tandem paragliding all over the world. Popular locations include:

  • Bright, Australia – tandem paragliding in the mountainous regions of Bright in Victoria
  • Grouse Mountain, Vancouver – tandem paragliding from the popular ski resorts
  • Bali, Indonesia – beautiful beach and sea views
  • Arizona, USA – dry mountain ranges at the edge of the desert
  • Tirol, Austria – luscious fjord-like mountains with opportunities to tandem paraglide during the summer and snowy winters

In the larger tourist areas it’s not hard to find a tourism operator who provides tandem paragliding. In less touristy areas, you may be able to arrange tandem paragliding by contacting the local paragliding club.

How Much Does Tandem Paragliding Cost?

tandem paragliding in alps

Tandem paragliding has an average cost of $200 USD, depending on the country. This cost helps the operators to purchase and maintain paragliding and safety equipment, pay insurance and staff, manage marketing of their business. Some operators will include pickup and dropoff from your hotel to the launch and landing zones.

Is Tandem Paragliding Safe?

Yes tandem paragliding is very safe. It’s not much more dangerous than crossing the road! Instructors must have a significant level of experience across various meteorological conditions. Many tandem pilots gain their qualifications from the Association of Paragliding Pilots and Instructors (APPI).

To achieve the Pro Tandem Qualification, pilots must possess:

  • APPI 5 Advanced Pilots Qualification (or proof of similar skills such as 200 flights across different sites and conditions)
  • Qualification as an APPI non-commercial tandem pilot for at least one year
  • First aid training

The Pro Tandem qualification involves rigorous theory, practical and inflight testing, to ensure the highest standard of tandem paragliding pilot emerges.

What is the Weight Limit for Tandem Paragliding?

The maximum weight for most tandem paragliders is about 220-240 kilograms (485 – 529 pounds). This takes into consideration the weight of both the pilot and passenger. For simplicity, most paragliding providers set a maximum passenger weight of about 110-120 kilograms (242 – 264 kilograms), however if the pilot is very light they may be able to accommodate someone in a slightly higher weight range.

One variable which can affect the tandem paragliding weight limit is wind. If there is little wind, a pilot may not feel comfortable flying close to the weight limit, particularly during launch. On days with higher winds and stronger thermals they are likely to be more comfortable about flying close to the weight limit.

What’s the Minimum Age for Tandem Paragliding?

The minimum age for tandem paragliding differs greatly between country and the operator. The youngest we’ve seen is four years old, however some have a minimum age of 14. One commonality is that the child has their parents written permission.

Some operators set a minimum weight instead of age. This is usually around the 35 – 40 kilograms (77 – 88 pounds).

How to Launch When Tandem Paragliding?

Most tandem paragliding flights will commence with the pilot strapped to the back of you. The pilot and yourself will both jog together with the pilot ensuring the wing makes its way into the air without getting tangled and fills full of air.

There’s not too much room for you to make an error. The best piece of advice is to listen to your pilot during the pre-flight briefs and run in time with the pilot when taking off. Fortunately checking the wing, one of the hardest parts of taking off, is performed solely by the pilot.

How to Prepare for Tandem Paragliding?

It’s recommended that you don’t eat or drink for two hours before your flight. This will help to avoid sickness and avoid having the need for using the toilet from ruining your flight.

One important tip for your preparation is to wear the right clothes when tandem paragliding. Mistakes can easily be made when people in summer beach locations wear shorts and a t-shirt and fail to consider the cooler temperatures and winds at higher altitudes. Always be prepared for wind and remember sunglasses to protect you from both sun and wind. Wind-proof jackets and hiking boots are good clothes to wear.

Travel Insurance for Tandem Paragliding?

There’s many travel insurance providers out there and there is significant difference in what they do and don’t cover. As a general rule of thumb, the cheaper policies and big name financial institutions generally don’t cover tandem paragliding and many other adventure/extreme sports.

We recommend selecting a shortlist of insurance companies who cover a number of adventure/extreme sports in the country you wish to tandem paraglide in and call them. Ask specifically about ‘tandem paragliding’, don’t just say “paragliding”. Also make sure that they will provide this cover in the correct country.

Will the Instructor Do Some Tricks?

Pilots are keen to give you a good time and give you a great first impression of paragliding. They’re often die-hard paragliding fans who gain great satisfaction from sharing the experience of paragliding with new people.

As long as the weather conditions are suitable, most pilots are happy to do some of the more basic acrobatic paragliding tricks and tight turns. On the other hand, if you would prefer a slow and smooth flight so you can admire the scenery, they’re also happy to do this. Let your pilot know what you’d like to do and how you’re feeling when you’re in the air and they’ll look after you.

So what do you think? Keen to give tandem paragliding a go? If your answer is yes, take a look at our paragliding location guides to learn more about the different places you can try this great pastime.

Paragliding in Provence

Discover the top Provence parapenting

If you’ve never tried paragliding before (or maybe you’re not entirely sure what it is) then Provence is a great place to learn how to fly.

Known as “parapenting” in France, today there are a number of clubs and organisations in the area whose sole purpose is to get you flying. So, if it is something that you have always fancied trying then Provence is a great place to give it a go.

What's new in Courchevel winter 2019/20 paragliding

The science

Often described as the "purest and simplest form of aviation", stemming from man’s long term ambition to be able to fly, others simply call it "a pure joy". Paragliders were originally developed from parachuting canopies, although it soon became apparent that the two required very different design criteria. Whilst a parachute has to withstand the incredible stresses of opening in free-fall and enable the pilot to descend at a fairly rapid rate; a paraglider is fully inflated before take-off, launched from the ground and requires a good gliding performance and a slow rate of descent. Paragliders began to take on more of the design features of the hang glider with a high-lift aerofoil shape and long slender wings. It is currently one of the fastest growing air sports in the world with much of its attraction being in the portability of the equipment; a canopy that weighs relatively little, fits in a large rucksack and can be taken all over the world.

Now for the science bit. When a paraglider is fully inflated it forms a solid “wing” which creates lift in the same way as that of a conventional aircraft. It must create enough lift to carry its own weight and that of the pilot and any passengers, and it achieves this with “gliding flight”. This means that the wing is constantly flying forwards and downwards through the air and in doing so provides a flow over the aerofoil section.

The pilot controls the wing with a series of suspension lines that are thin, but very strong, in order to minimise drag and weight. These lines converge into “ risers ” (usually 25mm webbing straps) that are attached to the harness and spread the weight load evenly over the wing. They also provide the pilot with a convenient single point to hold when launching, and channel the control lines down to the pilots’ hands so that he/she can steer. The controls are the equivalent of the brakes and steering wheel of a car and so by turning left and right and into and out of the wind or thermals, the pilot is able to speed up, slow down and gain or lose height. Modern paragliders are made out of super lightweight nylon meaning they can soar effortlessly through the air for hours on end in the right conditions.

Who can paraglide & what to wear

Pretty much anyone can paraglide, from little nippers to your granny as long as they can run approximately 10 metres for the take off. Flying itself does not require much physical effort (especially if you’re the passenger), hence why people of all ages and occupations can experience the delights of soaring above the mountain tops with only the birds for company. The main take off areas can be accessed by one of the chairlifts, and from the top it is usually just a short walk to the take off area.

Flights can be undertaken solo (but only with prior training from a qualified instructor) or in tandem with a qualified paragliding pilot, therefore opening up the experience to pretty much anyone. Pilots (and their passengers) wear a comfortable “seated” harness that is securely attached to the paraglider (and also to each other, with the pilot behind in the case of tandem flights). The paraglider itself is laid out flat on the ground of the take-off area and the pilot then fully inflates the wing by moving forward when a gentle gust of wind blows. Once inflated, both pilot and passenger run forward a few steps on a downward incline and, with a little manoeuvre from the pilot, you’re airborne.

From a height you will glide down to your destination on a tandem paraglider controlled by the instructor. They manoeuvre the parachute while the passenger enjoys the ride and fantastic views. Taking off is the only slightly scary moment; once you have been equipped with a helmet, and strapped to the instructor behind you, both of you simply run downhill getting faster and faster until the parachute lifts you into the air.

No particular level of fitness is required, just the ability to sit back and enjoy the view. You then peacefully glide above the beautiful landscape below for 10 to 20 minutes, aiming to catch thermals to keep you up for longer. Landing is very gentle and no more of an impact than jumping off a step. Top tip: go on a sunny, warm day when the thermals will keep your airborne for longer.

Clothing is an important factor when flying so you want to wear something that offers a degree of protection from sun/wind/cold etc, even if the weather is hot. Long trousers, a wind proof top, sunglasses and sun cream are essentials, as are good sturdy footwear such as walking boots (with ankle support), which will reduce the chance of slipping on take off or landing.

Tandem paragliding

Whether paragliding is a sport that you are thinking of taking up and want to know if you're going to like it; or if you simply want to experience the truly wonderful feeling of flying amongst Provence's breathtaking scenery - a tandem flight is the perfect introduction.

When booking a tandem flight, it is best to do so a day or two in advance and try and allow yourself some leeway in case of bad weather. It is not possible to fly in poor weather conditions so if your flight is cancelled for this reason, every effort would be made to reschedule it for the next mutually convenient time. It would be a terrible shame to miss out on the experience because you left it until your last day. The actual timing of your flight will be influenced to a certain extent by your age and size, but only in so much as it is better for children or petite adults to fly earlier in the day when the wind is not as strong. Certain take-off sites are also better at particular times of the day when known weather patterns will be present.

Once you've reached the take off area, the whole process will be clearly and calmly explained and a number of safety checks are carried out before the off. There is no rush at all and sometimes the services of a professional photographer are available at the top to record your big moment. The take off is progressive with no feeling of dropping; it is much more a gentle lift up and away from the ground. Once in the air, very few people feel afraid of the exposure (even vertigo sufferers) as the harness is seated and comfortable and it can feel rather like sitting on a plane (albeit with the windows open!) rather than being on the edge of a cliff.

As the passenger, you can choose how you want to fly, usually moving around the mountain to get different views and perspectives instead of circling over the one spot. Don't forget your camera. Ensure that it has a strap on it so that it can be securely attached to the harness leaving you free to snap away and not worry about dropping it should you fancy taking the controls yourself for a while. The landing is also a gradual affair due to the excellent manoeuvrability of the wing; you may need to run a few steps but it is usually gentle and certainly less dramatic than a parachute landing. Friends and family can wait for you at the landing area (or see you off at the top if you prefer) and you have time to relax and talk to your pilot once back on terra firma.

The whole activity normally takes about an hour with the flight itself lasting about 20 minutes. Sometimes, it is possible for a group of you to fly at the same time so you can normally take photos of each other in the air as the pilots will endeavour to fly you close to one another. Tandem flights are possible any day of the year, weather permitting, and that includes the winter. Flying in winter is actually no colder than skiing and in fact conditions are often more stable in the winter months making it an ideal time to take to the air. The launch is generally done on foot although it can be possible to take off on skis by special request and therefore miss the end of day rush to get off the mountain. All flight schools have strict safety standards to meet and equipment must be checked and maintained regularly. It takes many, many hours of flying to qualify as a tandem pilot so you can rest assured that you will be in highly qualified hands.

Summer Paragliding, Alpe d'Huez

Solo paragliding

If flying tandem was not enough for you and you have decided that “going solo” is the only way fly, then you should book yourself onto a beginners course. Regardless of what some reckless souls may say, the only safe way to learn to fly is to be trained by a qualified instructor.

The official regulatory body in the UK is the British Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association (BHPA) . They have a list of all the registered flight schools in the UK that offer tuition for all levels of pilot. However, what could be nicer than learning to fly in Provence? If fatigue or frustration begins to get the better of you then you only have to glance skywards to be reminded what it's all about.

The French training is split into three separate weeks: the Initiation course, then the Perf 1 and Perf 2 courses. These can be taken individually or back to back, but they don't have to completed all in the same year. A number of schools in the area offer five day Learn to Fly courses from June to October. During the five days you will become familiar with your equipment, learn to master the control of your wing on the ground and make your first solo take-offs from the gentle nursery slopes. The remainder of the course is spent building your skills and confidence with a number of smaller flights and then culminating in long flights from the mid-mountain take-off zones whilst in full radio contact with your flight instructor. These courses are interactive affairs where you are encouraged to ask questions and the instructors will test you on topics covered – after all, your safety depends on it. In order to make the most of these courses, you should be in reasonable physical shape beforehand as you will be walking and running up and down the nursery slopes several times while you get the hang of it.

If you have already completed a basic level course (here or elsewhere), then further tuition is available (and necessary) in order to hone and improve your skills in the sky. Improver courses or specialist training in flying thermals, cross-country and even tips on competitive flying are available. You will be asked for proof of previous flying experience (FFVL niveau vert / BHPA Elementary or Club Pilot or equivalent) before being accepted onto these more advances courses.

If you are already an experienced pilot then you will have an absolute field day flying in Provence. However, before setting out to fly in completely unfamiliar territory it is always worth seeking advice from your fellow flying club members or from local pilots when you arrive. The more you know about the site and the region, the safer and more enjoyable your flying will be. Don't rush to be the first to launch; sit and watch what the local pilots are doing as their actions will give you a good indication of prevailing conditions and thermal activity, in addition to your own assessment of the area. Always carry your flying licence or membership card with you and ensure that your medical insurance covers you sufficiently for flying abroad, including third party liability cover.

Take-off areas

Nearly all flying sites in France are open to the public although they may be controlled by one of the local flying schools or clubs, in conjunction with the governing body. You may find these schools and their tandem pilots have priority at the launch areas. Some sites, for various reasons may well be closed during parts of the year (especially in the nature reserves when animals have young) so it is important to respect these closure periods.

All the official paragliding sites have notice boards placed at both the launch and landing areas, giving information of school or club address and phone numbers, rescue services phone number or radio frequencies. These notice boards describe launch directions and landing approaches, flying restrictions, wind and thermal turbulence problems if any, areas that may be dangerous to fly near, and so on. Again this information tends to be in French but English translations are becoming more and more common. Keep your pocket dictionary handy just in case!

Delta Evasion, paragliding

Landing areas

It is imperative that you only land on official sites as not doing so can cause conflict with local landowners. Landing areas get lost as a result of the impolite and disrespectful attitudes of a few pilots. If you do encounter problems and are forced to make an emergency landing somewhere, always be polite and apologetic and offer to pay for any damage caused to the landowners’ property or crops if necessary (your third party liability covers you for such eventualities).

$1495 – 2 Day Clinic – Or FREE with purchase of full tandem set up

To become a Tandem Instructor you need an Advanced rating, Turbulence sign-off, AND minimum 200 hours of logged air time OR 100 hours with 500 flights of at least 500 ft. vertical descent OR 100 hours with 500 flights of 2 minutes duration or longer. The Tandem Instructor Rating is regarded as the highest rating a pilot can achieve according to Eagle Paragliding. This rating requires Tandem Instructors to represent our sport to the public at large. This rating requires pilot experience, skill, and judgment. We are granted the ability to fly tandems as an instructional flight by the FAA. This exemption is renewed if all tandem pilots operating in the United States continue to follow the guidelines of the exemption.

Eagle offers two day clinics for tandem pilots to achieve their T1 rating, which allows the Tandem Instructor Candidate to fly with other USHPA rated pilots with a Novice P2 Rating or higher. T2 pilots have permission to fly wish USHPA members with a P1 or higher rating. The T3 rating is the highest tandem rating, and allows pilots to fly with anyone who is a member or temporary 30 day member of USHPA.

Tandem flying is an excellent instructional opportunity for students and certified pilots. Tandem Clinic participants work on technique and theory as they work towards their tandem certification. We work on passenger briefings, launching and landing techniques, and plenty of “what if” scenarios. Contact Eagle Paragliding or check our Paragliding Events Calendar to see when our next Tandem Clinic is scheduled.
