After it was pushed back from its original October 2019 release date to July 2020 before being pushed back another whole year, the time has finally come that we get to see Dwayne Johnson visit " the backside of water ." In Jungle Cruise , based on the popular Disneyland attraction of the same name, The Rock plays a sea boat captain enlisted to help guide an eccentric scientist, played by Emily Blunt , on a quest to find the Tree of Life during World War I. While it is easy to tell that this is destined to be one of the biggest 2021 movies with such huge stars in the lead, there are many other big names in the Jungle Cruise cast to look forward to seeing.

Dwayne Johnson in Jungle Cruise

Dwayne Johnson (Frank Wolff)

Playing a hero named Frank who runs a slightly sketchy river tour operation until he's hired by Emily Blunt ’s character for an entirely different purpose is The Rock. He first transitioned from wrestling to acting playing his father on That ‘70s Show before making his film debut in 2001’s The Mummy Returns as The Scorpion King.

He first became friendly with Disney with family films like The Game Plan before the Fast and Furious movies certified him as a franchise rejuvenator and box office draw. After the Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle star returns to the jungle again, he will re-team with Jungle Cruise director Jaume Collet-Serra for Black Adam (one of the most anticipated DC movies ), return to California for a Big Trouble in Little China sequel, and revisit Hawaii for Robert Zemeckis’ Kamehameha biopic , The King.

Emily Blunt in Jungle Cruise

Emily Blunt (Dr. Lily Houghton)

It is actually surprising that it took until now for Dwayne Johnson and Golden Globe winner Emily Blunt (who plays Lily Houghton, a woman on a quest to find a mythical tree in the Amazon that can cure any ailment) to join forces. For one, she is also a Disney darling, with Mary Poppins Returns and others, and has led action-packed blockbusters like the A Quiet Place movies (directed by and co-starring her husband John Krasinski ).

The British beauty first got America’s attention with 2006’s The Devil Wears Prad , which led to an impressively versatile career, ranging from sci-fi thrillers like Looper to dark indie dramedies like Sunshine Cleaning to light rom-coms like The Five-Year Engagement with Jason Segel . Blunt does not seem interested in granting many fans’ wish to see her play Invisible Woman in the Marvel movies , but could follow Jungle Cruise by reprising her Edge of Tomorrow role if the long-awaited sequel ever happens , that is.

Jack Whitehall in Jungle Cruise

Jack Whitehall (MacGregor Houghton)

Playing the role of MacGregor Houghton, the brother of Lily who accompanies her on the voyage is Jack Whitehall, who may finally make a splash with American audiences by starring in Jungle Cruise . This is not to say, however, that the British comedian does not already have a following in the States, having starred in 2016’s Mother’s Day , the hit Amazon Prime original miniseries Good Omens in 2019, and The Nutcracker and the Four Realms (his first collaboration with Disney) a year earlier. Later in 2021, Whitehall will appear in the live-action Clifford the Big Red Dog movie and is slated to star in two very unique upcoming romance movies called Silent Retreat and Robots .

Paul Giamatti in Jungle Cruise

Paul Giamatti (Nilo Nemolato)

As Nilo Nemolato, who manages the port where Frank keeps his boat, we have Paul Giamatti , who has been acting since the ‘90s, appearing in bit parts in movies like Jim Carrey’s The Truman Show and the Saving Private Ryan cast before he earned his first Golden Globe nomination for 2004’s Sideways , which made him a household name. He has since become an Oscar nominee for Cinderella Man , a Golden Globe and Emmy winner for HBO’s John Adams miniseries, a Marvel villain (Rhino) in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 , a shady record producer in the NWA biopic Straight Outta Compton , and even Santa Claus in 2007’s Fred Claus with Vince Vaughn.

Jungle Cruise marks Paul Giamatti's second collaboration with Disney after Saving Mr. Banks and his second collaboration with Dwayne Johnson after San Andreas from 2015. He. is also a series regular on Showtime’s Billions and will reportedly reunite with Sideways director Alexander Payne for The Holdovers .

Jesse Plemons in Jungle Cruise

Jesse Plemons (Prince Joachim)

Prince Joachim, the one who steals the arrowhead from Emily Blunt and attacks Dwayne Johnson's boat from a submarine in the Jungle Cruise trailer, is played by Jesse Plemons . He has has proved that he can play a good bad guy as Todd on the Breaking Bad cast , in one of the best Black Mirror episodes (“U.S.S. Callister”), in the dark comedy Game Night , Netflix’s I’m Thinking of Ending Things , and as a morally bankrupt FBI agent in Judas and the Black Messiah most recently.

Jungle Cruise could technically qualify as the latest of his multiple Disney projects, having appeared in Twentieth Century Fox’s Like Mike as a teen and Fargo - FX’s anthology series based on the 1996 Coen Brothers movie. The former Friday Night Lights cast member also worked with Steven Spielberg on Bridge of Spies , was directed by Martin Scorsese for The Irishman and the upcoming Killers of the Flower Moon , narrated Vice , and his role in Antlers (one of the most anticipated upcoming horror movies ) will finally hit the screen in October. 2021.

Edgar Ramirez in Jungle Cruise

Édgar Ramírez (Aguirre)

Also playing one of the villains in Jungle Cruise , named Aguirre, is Venezuelan actor Édgar Ramírez, who has played everybody from Gianni Versace to the role of Bohdi in the remake of Point Break after breaking out in Hollywood in a small The Bourne Ultimatum part. This led to getting second billing in the possession thriller Deliver Us From Evil , the lead in sports biopic Hands of Stone , and a few Netflix movies, including 2017’s Bright and the family comedy Yes Day in 2021. Following Jungle Cruise (his second film with Emily Blunt after The Girl on the Train ) Ramírez will reunite with his Zero Dark Thirty co-star Jessica Chastain in Netflix’s The 355 and has joined the Borderlands cast for Eli Roth’s film adaptation of the popular video game series.

Jungle Cruise's Veronica Falcón in Queen of the South

Veronica Falcón (Trader Sam)

Portraying a gender-swapped version of Trader Sam - a classic character from the original Jungle Cruise attraction - is Veronica Falcón, who made her English-language debut in the 2007 thriller Not Forgotten years before starring alongside The Suicide Squad ’s Alice Braga on USA’s Queen of the South and on HBO’s Perry Mason series reboot later in 2020. The following year has been huge for the Mexican actress so far, from a small part on the Falcon and Winter Soldier cast , a large part on the Why Women Kill cast, and an appearance in the latest of the Purge movies , The Forever Purge . Falcón will next star on Ozark Season 4 , in The Starling alongside Melissa McCarthy and Timothy Olyphant, and Apple TV+’s Mr. Corman with creator and star Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

Jungle Cruise's Andy Nyman in Ghost Stories

Andy Nyman (Sir James Hobbs-Coddington)

Another British actor who could likely call Jungle Cruise the most high-profile credit on his resume to date (at least to American audiences) is Andy Nyman, who previously worked with director Jaume Collet-Serra on the Liam Neeson action thriller The Commuter in 2019. Much earlier, he starred in the original Death at a Funeral from 2007 , played The Tumor in Kick-Ass 2 , and appeared on Netflix’s Peaky Blinders as Winston Churchill. The co-writer, co-director, and star of Ghost Stories - one of the most acclaimed anthology horror movies in recent memory - also played a Jail Guard in Star Wars: The Last Jedi , had a recurring role in Amazon’s series reboot of Hanna , and starred in the Academy Award-winning biopic Judy in 2019.

It looks like the Jungle Cruise cast may help drive Disney’s latest theme park attraction-based movie toward a treasure trove of riches.

Disney's Jungle Cruise Cast & Character Guide

Jungle Cruise promises to be an adventurous and exhilarating movie. Here's who's who in Disney's latest theme-park-inspired film.

With the promise of adventure, excitement, legends and curses , Disney’s Juggle Cruise is sure to be an exhilarating movie. It takes its inspiration from the boat attraction of the same name, which can be found at four Disney theme parks worldwide, and its premise is the search for the legendary Tree of Life. The only problem is that that tree, which could greatly improve medicine, is supposedly deep within the Amazon Jungle.

Intent on making the discovery of a lifetime, a British scientist and her brother travel to South America and enlist the services of a local captain, who runs a less-than-pristine riverboat attraction. Along the way, they will have to face the dangerous wildlife and the deadly environment of the Amazon. And to make matters worse, there has to be a villain of some kind, so an Imperial German expedition is also racing to find the same legendary tree. With all that to keep track of, here's who’s who ahead of  Jungle Cruise’s  release.

Dwayne Johnson as “Skipper” Frank Wolff

“The Rock” plays Frank Wolff, who owns a jungle cruise business that he describes as the “cheapest” expedition of its kind. Frank tends to be shrewd and cynical but can be noble when the need arises. During Jungle Cruise , Frank is hired to offer passage to two explorers on their quest for the Tree of Life on his boat La Quila but only agrees after being offered a large sum of money. His character is based on the skippers from the original Jungle Cruise attraction, and his attire takes inspiration from Charlie Allnut from The African Queen .

Emily Blunt as Dr. Lily Houghton

The star of A Quiet Place II , Emily Blunt plays Dr. Lily Houghton, who is a bit like Indian Jones -- eccentric and always looking for an adventure. According to Blunt , Lily is “brave and fearless and wild, and she’s brilliant-minded and humble.” In Jungle Cruise , the character is a British scientist and explorer determined to find the Tree of Life to study it for its medicinal benefits. She, along with her brother, travel to South America, where they hire Skipper Frank Wolff to give them passage up the Amazon River on their quest.

Jack Whitehall as McGregor Houghton

Jack Whitehall is well known for playing Gothi the Troll Priest in Frozen , but in Jungle Cruise , he portrays Lily Houghton’s younger brother, McGregor, who is unambiguously gay. Fiercely devoted to Lily, he accompanies her to the Amazon, even if he isn't the adventurer that she is. In fact, he is skeptical about going after the tree in the first place.

Paul Giamatti as Nilo Nemolato

Paul Giamatti, who recently appeared in Netflix’s Gunpowder Milkshake , plays Nilo Nemolato, the irritable harbormaster where Frank docks his riverboat. For those concerned about missing Giamatti's performance, don't worry, Nilo can be spotted by a pet cockatoo that accompanies him everywhere.

Édgar Ramírez as Aguirre, Quim Gutiérrez as Melchor and Dani Rovira as Sancho

Ramírez, Gutiérrez and Rovira play a trio of cursed, Spanish conquistadors who are also looking for the Tree of Life. Aguirre’s character, specifically, is based on a real-life conquistador named Lope de Aguirre, who was once dubbed “El Loco” after driving himself mad during a failed search for the lost city of El Dorado.

Jesse Plemons as Prince Joachim

Jesse Plemons, who is best known for his roles in films like Game Night and  The Irishman , portrays Prince Joachim in Jungle Cruise . As with any good film, there has to be a villain, and Joachim offers that for this Disney flick. At the same time Dr. Lily Houghton is searching for the Tree of Life, Joachim, who is a deranged German aristocrat, is funding a competing, military expedition to claim the discovery as his own accomplishment.

Veronica Falcón as Trader Sam

Veronica Falcón plays Lupe in the 2020 HBO reboot of Perry Mason , but in Jungle Cruise, she plays a female version of Trader Sam from the Jungle Cruise ride. Trader Sam is the chief is the chieftain of the Indigenous tribe that protects the Tree of Life everyone is searching for. However, the character doesn't come without its own set of issues, as it was removed from the Disney attraction earlier this year after being deemed offensive.

Other Named, Minor Characters

There are other minor characters in Jungle Cruise , but ahead of the film’s release, details on their roles are slim. Raphael Alejandro plays Zaqueu, Simone Lockhart is Anna, Philipp Maximilian tackles Axel, Sulem Calderon portrays Quila and Andy Nyman takes on Sir James Hobbs-Coddington.

Jungle Cruise releases Friday in theaters and on Disney+ Premier Access.

News Disney+

The cast of disney’s jungle cruise talks humor, heart, and adventure.

And now, the moment you’ve all been waiting for… the amazing… the colossal… the stupendous… the eighth wonder of the world… The back side of water, on the big screen! That’s right, the long-awaited film adaptation of Disney’s Jungle Cruise is finally here, taking the Disney Parks attraction we know and love and bringing it to life. Actors Dwayne Johnson, Emily Blunt, Jack Whitehall, and Edgar Ramírez sat down in July to talk about their new movie, Disney’s Jungle Cruise , when it first came to theaters and Disney+ with Premier Access.

Dwayne Johnson, who plays skipper Frank Wolff, is also a producer on the film. He explains of his decision to climb aboard the project, “I immediately just saw the potential of the opportunity to [adapt] a beloved and iconic Disney ride since 1955 when the park opened. This was Walt Disney's baby.” And the spirit of the attraction is alive in this film. Jack Whitehall, who plays MacGregor Houghton, brother to Emily Blunt’s Lily Houghton, says, “I would say the element to the Jungle Cruise ride that I like the most is that it doesn't take itself too seriously, and I think that that is definitely something that we took over into the movie.” Blunt shares, “I know when [Dwayne] and I first met Jaume [Collet-Serra, the director], we both asked him the same question. We said, ‘Well, what do you feel this movie's about?’ And he goes, "You know, it's about love." It was so perfect, 'cause you could've talked about all the action, the spectacle, and the myths, and the legends, and all that. But that's when I knew in Jaume we had an innate romantic, and a world builder, and that's what you need for this type of movie.”

Meet the Characters of Disney’s Jungle Cruise

By the D23 Team

Disney’s Jungle Cruise , inspired by the classic Disney theme park attraction, is a rollicking thrill ride down the mighty and mysterious Amazon, set to make waves when it arrives in theaters and on Disney+ Premier Access on Friday, July 30. Featuring a star-studded cast led by Dwayne Johnson as the wisecracking skipper Frank Wolff and Emily Blunt as determined botanist Dr. Lily Houghton, Jungle Cruise is a pulse-quickening adventure in which Lily enlists Frank’s guide service and his ramshackle boat, La Quila , to convey her through the deepest and most dangerous parts of the Amazon River to try to uncover the mystery of an ancient tree—one with the power to change the fate of humanity. Here is a guide to the dazzling array of colorful characters you will meet beginning this Friday when Jungle Cruise debuts.

jungle cruise

Frank Wolff/Dwayne Johnson Charismatic skipper Frank Wolff is head of the Jungle Navigation Company. Opportunistic and endlessly charming, Frank leads unwitting tourists on sightseeing cruises along the Amazon that are low on substance but high on humor. As a producer, the potential for a Jungle Cruise –influenced feature film project was tantalizing enough, but to take on the mantle of Frank, the down-on-his-luck skipper of the jungle cruise riverboat, was chock-full of possibilities for Johnson. Describing his character, Johnson says, “Frank is a skipper on the Amazon, and he takes a lot of pride in what he does. There are elements as the movie progresses where you start to realize things about Frank that one would never have guessed. The man is an old soul who has a very unique perspective on life itself. Frank meets Lily, who is ambitious and brave and funny and charming and beautiful, and all these things eventually remind him how great life can be.”

jungle cruise

Dr. Lily Houghton/Emily Blunt Dr. Lily Houghton is a determined British scientist and explorer who is as brilliant as she is fearless. Driven not only by her ideals but by an unrelenting desire to prove herself, free-spirited Lily is a force to be reckoned with. “I was just so struck by Lily’s determination and tenacity, and the fact that she was so ahead of her time, considering that the film is set in 1917,” says Blunt. “There was so much inequality between men and women and what was expected of her at the time. But she doesn’t subscribe to what was appropriate for her sex. And I found her really funny. She’s very reckless and heedless and adventurous. I admired her spirit.”

jungle cruise

Captain Aguirre/Edgar Ramírez Captain Aguirre is the fearsome leader of a cutthroat crew of soldiers. These cursed men are powerful fighters who carry a personal vendetta that makes them even more of a threat to Frank and Lily on their quest. “I also love the mystery of my character, Aguirre, and the duality of the character,” Ramirez says. “To play a character like Aguirre, who walks that very thin line between good and evil, is very interesting.”

jungle cruise

MacGregor Houghton/Jack Whitehall Lily’s brother, MacGregor, joins her and Frank on their expedition down the Amazon. Dapper MacGregor enjoys the finer things in life—stylish fashion, fine dining and elegant living—even in the middle of the rain forest. British comedian/actor Jack Whitehall is perfectly cast as a well-meaning sibling, whose often inept attempts to take care of his sister give the film some of its most hilarious moments. Although he and Blunt had never met, they soon discovered some unexpected overlaps in their backgrounds growing up in the same part of London. The pair easily fell into a familial rapport. “Our backstories are very similar,” notes Whitehall, “so Emily and I playing sister and brother just seems so right. I think we’ve been able to transfer all of those weird connections we have on to the screen in the best possible way.”

jungle cruise

Nilo/Paul Giamatti Owner of a wildly successful sightseeing cruise company, Nilo is a powerful figure—and a tough competitor—in the Amazonian port town where Frank ekes out a living with his ramshackle boat. Veteran actor Paul Giamatti portrays Nilo, who has a long history with Frank Wolff, Johnson’s character. “Nilo keeps Frank under his thumb,” says Giamatti. “He extorts money out of him, and he wants all the boats in the town. He even wants Frank’s beat-up boat. Nilo just wants to control everything. So he’s bullying Frank to get what he wants.” Frank’s boat, La Quila , is the exact opposite of Nilo’s slick, state-of-the-art tourist boats that are moored in the same harbor. “ La Quila is a wonderful sort of character in and of itself,” comments Giamatti. “It’s just a fantastic, beat-up old trooper of a boat, which Frank is like too, in many ways. Frank’s been around a long time, and the boat’s been around a long time.”

jungle cruise

Prince Joachim/Jesse Plemons Prince Joachim is a wealthy and capable young commander with an arsenal of military-grade weapons at his disposal. In his quest for power and glory, he ruthlessly seeks the secret at the heart of Lily and Frank’s journey. “We tried to create a villain character that feels unique,” Plemons says. “It was just about finding his quirks. He’s someone who is forward-thinking and looking far ahead into the future. So, I tried to keep that in mind when I was working on the character.”

'Jungle Cruise' — release date, plot, cast, trailer, and all you need to know.

Jungle Cruise stars Emily Blunt and Dwayne Johnson in a thrilling adventure into the unknown.

Jungle Cruise: Skipper Frank Wolff (Dwayne Johnson) and Dr Lily Houghton (Emily Blunt) are in the heart of the jungle

Jungle Cruise is Disney's new action-adventure family film, inspired by one of the original rides at Disneyland in California. Set in the early 20th century, the film follows an intrepid scientist as she embarks upon a mission to find a legendary tree deep within the jungle, whose petals are believed to have the power to cure any illness and break any curse. In order to get there, she enlists a slippery and cynical steamboat captain, and her extremely reluctant younger brother.

Here's everything you need to know about the film...

Aboard Frank's ship, Frank (Dwayne Johnson), Lily (Emily Blunt) and McGregor (Jack Whitehall) see danger up ahead...

Jungle Cruise release date

Jungle Cruise will be released in cinemas on Friday July 30. As with other recent Disney releases like Cruella and Black Widow , it will also be available simultaneously to Disney+ subscribers via the Premier Access service for an additional one-off fee ( $30 in the US, £19.99 in the UK).

What is the plot of Jungle Cruise?

Dr Lily Houghton has spent many years studying reports of the fabled Tree Of Life, supposedly hidden deep within the jungle, whose petals are rumoured to have the power to cure any illness and break any curse. She wants to find the Tree and study its petals in the hope of advancing medical science — but it's the early 20th century, and very few people are willing to take a woman seriously on a matter like this.

Undeterred, Lily sets off to find it accompanied by her younger brother McGregor, who would much rather be safe on dry land enjoying a nice meal and a drink, but has nonetheless agreed to accompany his sister. Lily recruits steamboat captain Frank Wolff and his ramshackle vessel to help them get there, but the journey into the jungle is relatively uncharted and filled with danger.

However, Lily is not the only person looking for the Tree Of Life, as unhinged German aristocrat Prince Joachim is also determined to find it for his own purposes — and along the way she learns that Aguirre, a conquistador who set out to find the Tree Of Life many years before, met a terrible fate...

Frank (Dwayne Johnson) and Lily (Emily Blunt) stand on the deck of Frank's boat, both leading against the cabin as the river stretches out behind them

What are your critics saying about Jungle Cruise

What to Watch critic Leigh Monson had the below to say about Disney's newest adventure.

" Jungle Cruise is the kind of film that used to be the embodiment of blockbuster cinema, a silly, over-the-top adventure with characters who are having just as much fun exploring their surroundings and each other as you are watching them. The effortless chemistry of the two leads elevates a high-concept romp to something truly special, and we can only hope that any eventual imitators learn the right lessons."

Who is in the cast of Jungle Cruise?

Emily Blunt ( A Quiet Place , Mary Poppins Returns ) stars as Dr Lily Houghton, alongside Dwayne Johnson ( The Fast And The Furious , Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle ) as Frank 'Skipper' Wolff and Jack Whitehall ( Bad Education , Fresh Meat ) as McGregor Houghton.

The film also stars Jesse Plemons ( Judas And The Black Messiah ) as Prince Joachim, Edgar Ramírez ( The Undoing ) as Aguirre, and Paul Giamatti ( Billions ) as Nilo Nemolato, the unscrupulous harbourmaster who manages the port where Frank is based.

Veronica falcon interview: jungle cruise.

Jungle Cruise actress Veronica Falcon chats about the funny script, working with the cast, & putting her own spin on the character of Trader Sam.

Jungle Cruise , currently out in theaters and on Disney+, is a loving reimagining of the iconic park ride. While the themed journey has a backstory already, thanks to the ride's half-century history, the film expands on its characters and sense of adventure alike.

One of the well-known characters from the ride is Trader Sam, who has been reinvented as a woman ahead of her time and looking out for her tribe. Actress Veronica Falcon spoke to Screen Rant about her memories of the ride, her experience on the film, and what she imagines as a perfect sequel .

Screen Rant: This is the very first time Trader Sam is going to be seen cinematically. Can you talk to me about how the project came to you?

Veronica Falcon: It came the usual way, through an audition. Mary Vernieu, the casting director of the movie, invited me to audition through my agent. I did one audition, and then it took more or less two months until I got an interview with the director. And then two or three days later, they told me I got the job, which was amazing.

Are you familiar with Trader Sam's backstory at all?

Veronica Falcon: Yeah, but it's very different of course [once] you read about it. And even in the Jungle Cruise ride, it was probably one of the first rides I took the first time I visited these now when I was a young girl. I never in a thousand years imagined I was going to play Trader. But this is a new take on Trader. So, of course, we tried to use the backstory, but I also tried to reimagine the character with all the information that I had on the script. And these characters are so iconic, and they're so well thought [out] that you basically just try to honor them. The costume designing of Paco Delgado is extraordinary; same with the makeup of Joel Harlow and all his team. Really, you just need to step into the work of so many people and just try to honor it.

What appealed to you the most about that character when you read the script and saw the updated version of the character?

Veronica Falcon: I think it's the sense of wonder. It's a character that has such a joy of life, and everything is fascinating and wonderful. She has a great sense of humor, she's very protective of her people, she's very smart, and she can make all these deals happen.  She has this wonderful friendship with Frank [Dwayne Johnson] - and the fact that she's a woman, and she's the boss, and she's the chief of her tribe. She has this spiritual quality because she's also very wise. So, the combination of all those things, I think, is quite fascinating.

You also get to share the screen with some of the biggest actors in the world: Dwayne Johnson, Emily Blunt , and Jack Whitehall. Can you talk to me about working with them and your experience being on such a massive project with them?

Veronica Falcon: It was incredibly easy and happy because what you see is what you get. They're not faking it. They're great actors, but what you see is real. They have a great relationship; they are fun and kind people, they really are. They made me feel very, very welcome.  At first, I have never worked on a project of this magnitude. I was a bit intimidated since I want to do well with the character and I don't know how they're going to be. And they were the loveliest, kindest, most generous people I've worked with in a long time. And they were funny; we laughed a lot.  It was funny because I started filming more or less two months after they started. So, they already had this rapport. I came in, and they were very welcoming. And at the same time, for me, it was so much fun. When you see Trader eating a little fruit and watching the whole thing? If you see us backstage, it was kind of the same thing. They were doing all these jokes, and I was just surveying and laughing with them. So, it was a great experience.  You also learn a lot. You learn a lot because they're incredible. Not only are they incredibly prepared with what they're doing - they know what they're doing and they're great at it - [but] they're also very present with everybody on set. They're kind, and they're relaxed. There's no screaming and there's no attitude - and it's lovely to work with people that are some of the best in the world, and you still see this kindness and this generosity.

Frank the Skipper has a ton of great puns and jokes in this. Do any jump out is your favorite?

Veronica Falcon: You know what? I think the one of the eye... I don't remember what he says, but he makes like three jokes about the eye thing. And it just cracks the hell out of me, because it's just funny. It's very simple, but it is funny.  And I really love the reaction of Jack. Emily's like, "Ugh, your jokes," and Jack is cracking up. Just to see him, that's funny and then funny again.

Can you talk about the collaboration process when working with director Jaume Collet-Serra? What did his directing style bring to Jungle Cruise ?

Veronica Falcon: Well, he is incredible. He is a very, very dedicated director. He was on top of things 24/7. I don't know how that man got through it, because he really worked hard. He was on top of everything. He was very passionate about it.  I think everybody had a lot of heart. Disney really believed in this movie; Dwayne and Emily, the same. But Jaume? I think if they were the heart of the movie, Jaume was the soul. He was incredible. He's a very serious director. Sometimes it would be funny, because he's really serious and is really doing his work - and then we were all laughing because we were just having fun. And Jaume was like, "Okay, we have to do this take." And I felt a little bit like we're at school, you know? We're having fun, and the director's like, "Come on, guys. Just do the work."  He's a great example. Because when you see a director so dedicated, and putting all his heart and all his time and all his effort - and he was about to become a father when we were doing Jungle Cruise. Sometimes we were like, "Jaume, go do something and rest." No, he was absolutely dedicated to the movie, so that's incredibly inspiring. Because when you see your stars being totally into it, and your director and everybody else, that's the least you can do. It's inspiring for all of us, and it's like a synergy that starts being created.  I met him on the phone for an interview and, funny enough, I was on a holiday in Barcelona in Spain. That's where he's from. He was like, "Where are you?" I say, "I'm in your town." He was like, "Oh! Well, have a paella," because they have great food in Spain, as you know. I just thought it was funny that the time I met the director, I was on a holiday in his hometown. Yeah, he was fantastic.  And Jaume was incredibly patient. He would patiently explain to you what he needed. He was very clear at communicating with us actors, so it was fun.

You had such great comedic moments as Trader Sam, such as ditching McGregor (Jack Whitehall) on the submarine. Can you talk about infusing comedy into the character?

Veronica Falcon: Well, it's all in the script, and it's the direction of Jaume. And I'm playing with Jack, and Jack is phenomenal. The man can do stand-up - can do basically anything. So, I'm basically incredibly protected by all of that: by a wonderful script, by a great director, and by my castmates. So, it's really not on me. Yeah, the character is funny and is so well-written, and the timing [is perfect]. When you work with someone like Jack that has such great comedic chops, you really just have to be very present and let him get you there and jump into it. It's like dancing with a great dancer: you may know how to dance, but then they will help you around. Then you do something, and it works. And then it starts building from there. But it's all in the script, really.

Do you remember your first time riding Jungle Cruise? And if you do, do you remember some of the things that stood out to you most about the ride?

Veronica Falcon: The first time I rode Jungle Cruise, I was very little. It was my first time in Disneyland. We had been wanting to go to Disneyland for a long time, but I lived in Mexico and came from middle class family, so it took a while. And then when we went there, it was in winter so it was very cold. We took the ride, and I remember my brother was three years younger - I was 11, and he must have been seven or eight. He really wanted to touch all the animals in the water, but it was very cold. My mother kept pulling him, and he kept going - and it became a tug of war between both of them. That's one of my images, seeing my mom not wanting him to get wet and him wanting to jump with the animals.  I remember his face. He was like, "They're real!" I didn't want to tell him that it's a ride. He probably thought we were there, because he was younger. And then you get into that convention, and it almost starts feeling like it's real. It was a great time, and we laugh about that now.

What did you want to bring to the role of Trader Sam that wasn't necessarily on the page?

Veronica Falcon: Really, everything was on [the] page. One of the things I love about the character is, as I said, the sense of wonder and the joy. It's not something I bring, it is there. But I like the fact that she's a woman, and that she can play all these roles to her people - because she is buying and selling stuff, she's protecting them, she's guiding them spiritually, and she's also having fun. I could totally see her spending time with the kids in the villages playing, and discovering things. Being that empowered, I think, is something that's important to watch. She was a female that that was ahead of her time. That is in the script, and the thing that I tried to bring to the character is that joy of being able to do so many things at a time where women couldn't do it.  You see it very clearly with the character of Emily. We were talking about how these two characters are ahead of their times. She's a doctor and a scientist, and she's a fantastic woman that is willing to explore and go to the end of the world. And wear pants, which in those days was unheard of. And then this other character is in the Amazon, and she's protecting people, and she's creating all these ideas to get more money to maybe make her village a little better. She gets into these dealings with Frank, and I love that. I love the sense of independence and empowerment of the character.

If there was a Jungle Cruise sequel , would you want to explore more of Trader Sam's story? How would you like to see that story evolve?

Veronica Falcon: However Disney wants. I'm sure they know very well what they would do with that. I would be blessed just to play it again. If that ever happens, and they decide to invite me to play Trader, I would absolutely love to.  I'd love to see how the relationship with Frank happened, how they became such good friends would be a fun part to see. Or what happens after. What happens when they are in England? Maybe they come back, and maybe Trader already has another kind of business going. I don't know, that's up to them. They have incredible minds that create wonderful movies, so I'm sure they will come up with something fantastic. And I just would love to be part of it if they invite me.

You're also on one of my favorite shows, Ozark . I'm sure you're shooting season 4. Anything you can tell me about that show and the upcoming season?

Veronica Falcon: I can tell you that it's going to be fantastic. If you like the first three seasons, I think they're really doing [more]. They always did an extraordinary job, but because it's probably the last season , it's beyond.  I got the opportunity to read all the scripts - I'm not in all the season, but I'm in part of it - and I couldn't stop. And then I thought, "I'm so lucky." I get to read all this before anybody sees it. As a fan - because I was a fan of the show, and I'm a big fan of Laura [Linney] and Jason [Bateman]. They're fantastic actors. The fact that I'm able to play with them and to be part of this show is amazing.

I hope it's not the last season. I hope it goes on for much longer.

Veronica Falcon: We all would, but I think that's what they said. It's gonna be a long one, though. A very, very long one. And I think people are gonna love it. Yeah, you're gonna like it. It's great.

Background [ ]

Proxima is a wild jaguar that Frank Wolff adopted as a pet. To impress Lily Houghton and secure a deal in providing transport down river as well as show off in front of the town, he staged a fight with Proxima in the middle of the cantina in Porto Velho. Living aboard the La Quila on the lower deck, McGregor discovers her when going down to the lower deck during the expedition and the staged fight ends up playing into Lily's suspicions of Frank during the journey. When Frank reveals the truth of his past as a conquistador cursed with immortality, he describes Proxima as only the latest of his various pet wildcats over the centuries, with the name simply meaning "The next one" in Spanish, though he continually tells the current Proxima that she's his favorite. Proxima ends up accompanying Frank and the Houghtons on their return to civilization and London .

Role in the film [ ]

Proxima first appears during a negotiation between Frank and Lily where she prowls across the bar where she smells a piece of steak on the floor and as McGregor attempts to shoo her away just as Nilo tells the customers to stay calm with the jaguar inside just as Proxima angrily snarls at Lily and her brother. As Frank attempts to get the jaguar out of the bar, she pounces on Frank where he wrestles her, causing Frank to end up at the spot where the fight between the tarantula and the scorpion was taking place. After Proxima pounces on Frank, the scorpion prepares to strike Frank with its tail and the tarantula attempts to attack Frank with its mandibles. Seeing a piece of steak on the floor, Frank manages to evade the scorpion and tarantula and tosses the steak to distract her to which the surviving people inside the bar congratulate Frank for getting the jaguar out of the bar.

Later when Frank is fixing the engines on the La Quila, Frank apologizes to Proxima after being harsh with him at first and then later arrives at the harbor to meet Lily and her brother who are on their way to board the La Quila. After Frank provides dinner for Lily and her brother, McGregor decides to go to bed at the cabin area, where he doesn't notice Proxima is present. Suddenly, Proxima approaches McGregor and wakes him up, chasing him on the deck of the ship where Frank was able to calm down the jaguar, much to Lily explaining to Frank that he brought a jaguar on the ship.

The next day, the La Quila arrives at the Garaganta del Diablo where Proxima is present on deck. Frank tells Proxima to get the Arrowhead for him to which she approaches McGregor, much to his disgust. Suddenly, the La Quila arrives at the rapids where Frank navigates himself through the turbulent waters of the rapids where Lily, McGregor, and Proxima are told to be ready for the turbulent waters. Proxima survives the rapids after Frank managed to navigate through the rapids and the waterfall.

As the La Quila arrives at Ucayali Cove, Lily uses her camera to film Proxima who is chewing on McGregor's shoe just as she enters Frank's cabin to find a gallery of photos and sketches of modern inventions just as Proxima returns to her lair. Proxima shows up on deck and faces McGregor who promises her not to bite him if he pets her. Suddenly, McGregor and his sister are struck by darts fired by the Puka Michuna tribe alongside Frank where they are taken to the headhunter territory just as Proxima remains on the La Quila. Later when Frank is telling his flashback to Lily about his association with Aguirre before Aguirre began to show a hate towards Frank, Proxima is seen listening to Frank's story just before Frank narrates that he once kept a collection of wild cats to help accompany him each named Proxima just as Frank tells the jaguar Proxima to not be offended as the La Quila continues its journey to the La Luna Rota region.

Furthermore when Frank and Lily arrive at the La Luna Rota area where the Tears of the Moon are located and when McGregor and Frank are fighting against some of Joachim's soldiers, McGregor calls Proxima to help him just as she tackles on one of the soldiers who is preparing to shoot him to which the jaguar counters the attack in which Frank knocks off the soldier being tackled by Proxima just as MacGregor thanks her for saving him. Later when Frank and McGregor are planning to rescue Lily, Proxima grabs Frank to prevent him from falling off the La Quila and as he thanks her for saving him. Frank tells Proxima to protect McGregor while preparing to sacrifice the La Quila by crashing it into a pillar.

Later, Joachim becomes very enraged and threatens to kill Proxima, Lily, and McGregor in which MacGregor feels furious with Joachim who betrayed him just as McGregor knocks Joachim into a wall where he is crushed by falling debris. Proxima later notices Frank crashing his ship into the pillars to block the river alongside Lily and McGregor followed by the three of them looking at Frank being grabbed by the vines and later being petrified alongside the other conquistadors. Proxima sadly reacts to Frank who was petrified after being grabbed by the vines along with the other conquistadors as she fears that she will miss her owner to which Lily manages to restore Frank back to life using the petal she retrieved to bring her back to life just as Lily and her brother leave. Suddenly, Proxima reacts to the petal from the Tears of the Moon successfully reviving Frank just as Proxima happily reacts that her owner is alive as she happily rejoices with Frank, Lily, and McGregor.

The next day, Proxima returns back to Porto Velho via raft alongside Frank, Lily, and McGregor. She later passes by Nilo Nemolato who approaches Frank after Frank tells him that he has all the boats to which Proxima walks across the docks alongside Frank, Lily, and McGregor. Later when Frank, Lily, and McGregor arrive back at England, Proxima is seen during the end of the film where she is seen on the back of Lily's car where Lily teaches Frank how to drive a car just like her.

  • Ben Jenkin, who played Proxima, wore a leopard suit in scenes where Proxima appears on screen while doing motion capture of her for reference while the scenes were being filmed. In the finalized versions of the scenes where Proxima appears, the actor in the leopard suit was replaced by a CGI jaguar model with realistic features. Additionally, Proxima was animated by special effects company WETA Workshop, the company that contributed to other Disney films such as The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe , its 2008 sequel , Thor: Ragnarok ,the 2020 remake of Mulan , and others. Jungle Cruise

Jungle Cruise

  • Based on Disneyland's theme park ride where a small riverboat takes a group of travelers through a jungle filled with dangerous animals and reptiles but with a supernatural element.
  • 1916. Dreaming about saving countless lives and having another adventure, the feisty English feminist and doctor of botany, Dr Lily Houghton, embarks on a peril-laden mission to change the world. Along with her fashionable brother, MacGregor, Dr Houghton enlists the help of the arrogant, wisecracking riverboat skipper, Captain Frank Wolff, to guide them through the serpentine Amazon River in La Quila, his swift wooden boat. Now, as the intrepid trio ventures deeper and deeper into the heart of an impenetrable green maze, searching for something that cannot be found, a centuries-old curse and the ruthless aristocrat, Prince Joachim, threaten to put an end to their ambitious plans. And, sooner or later, the jungle always wins. Is it true that the Spanish conquistador, Don Aguirre, was lost in the same God-forsaken part of the world? — Nick Riganas
  • In the 16th century, Spanish conquistadors travel to South America in search of the Tears of the Moon, a mythical tree whose petals can cure any illness, heal any injury, and lift any curse. After most of the men die in the jungle, the survivors are nursed back to health by a local tribe using the tree petals. When they refuse to reveal the location of the tree, the Spanish destroy the village, and as punishment are cursed to never die and never be able to leave sight of the river. In 1916, Dr. Lily Houghton and her brother MacGregor detail Lily's research on the Tears of the Moon to an association of English explorers, explaining that the petals could revitalize medicine and aid in the war effort. The Houghton's request access to an arrowhead recovered by Dr. Albert Falls that Lily believes is key to locating the tree. When the association denies their request, believing the tree to be a myth and a female scientist unqualified to join their ranks, Lily steals the arrowhead instead. She narrowly avoids Prince Joachim, a German aristocrat who also wants the arrowhead and the tree. In South America, Frank Wolff takes tourists on jungle river cruises, which he embellishes with fake dangers and corny jokes. When his boat engine is repossessed by businessman Nilo, he attempts to steal it back. Caught in the act by Lily, Frank pretends to be Nilo and arrogantly tells her that the Tears of the Moon is a myth and that she will not be able to handle the dangers of the jungle, but changes his tone when he notices that Lily is in possession of the arrowhead. Frank's deception is revealed with the real Nilo shows up, but Lily hires Frank anyway after he underbids Nilo and bravely fights off a wild jaguar attack. Frank, Lily, and MacGregor depart on Frank's boat but are almost intercepted by Nilo attempting to get his engine back, mercenaries hired by Joachim to retrieve the arrowhead from Lily, and Joachim himself attacking in a German submarine. After they make their mistake, it is revealed that the attacking jaguar was actually Frank's pet Proxima, and Lily wonders if Frank can be trusted. Joachim locates the cursed conquistadors, whose bodies have turned to stone due to them traveling too far from the river, and have been infested over time by tree roots, snakes, and insects. Joachim frees them by diverting the river, and offers to help them break the curse if they help him to retrieve the arrowhead. As Frank, Lily and MacGregor continue down the river they become closer. MacGregor reveals to Frank that he was nearly disowned by his family due to his homosexuality, but Lily stood by him. Breaking into Frank's cabin, Lily finds photos and drawings of new inventions such as the automobile, but also discovers drawings of the arrowhead and research on the Tears of the Moon. Lily accuses Frank of wanting the tree for himself, but he explains he gave up searching for it a long time ago and believed it couldn't be found. They are attacked by a tribe of "cannibals" who demand the arrowhead, but this is revealed to be another deception by Frank working with a friendly tribe. Frank apologizes and says he was unable to call off the plan, but Lily rebuffs him. Trader Sam, the tribe's female leader, translates the writing on the arrowhead, revealing the location of the tree, and that it only blooms under a blood moon. The conquistadors attack and manage to take the arrowhead; Frank recovers it and gives it to Lily but is stabbed through the chest with a sword and falls to his death. Lily runs away from the river so that the Spaniards cannot follow her. The next morning, Lily discovers that Frank has miraculously survived. He reveals that his real name is Francisco, and he is actually one of the cursed conquistadors, unable to die or leave the river. The expedition to find the tree was originally a noble one to save the leader's sick daughter, but when the natives were attacked by the Spaniards, Frank switched sides to help the villagers. After years of fighting, Frank trapped the others in a cave away from the river. He then spent time searching for the tree to lift his own curse, but had been unable to find it without the arrowhead. An injured MacGregor stays behind with Trader Sam while Lily and Frank make the final journey to the tree. MacGregor is captured by Joachim and forced to reveal the location of the tree. Frank, Lily, the Germans, and the Spaniards all converge on the tree, which begins to bloom under the blood moon. The moon passes quickly as they fight, and Lily is only able to recover one petal. MacGregor kills Joachim, and Frank crashes his boat to block the river, turning himself and the other Spaniards into stone. Lily uses the petal to revive Frank and break the curse, only afterwords discovering that due to a shift in the moonlight there is one petal left for Lily's research. Back in London, the society has offered full membership to Lily, which she rejects. She shows Frank London and gives him his first driving lesson in her automobile as well as delivering a corny joke herself.
