We actually did 2 excursions with them. We took an 8am boat ride to the Ballistas and in the afternoon did the buggy ride. For the boat tour, they sent someone to walk us from their office to get on the boat. They stayed with us til we were securely on our way. For the buggy ride, they had a driver take us to the buggy carts and pick us up when it was over. We were really impressed. Read more Written April 4, 2024
  • imueew 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Would definitely recommend! Booked the night before, at first I didn’t get a lot of information. But after I asked I received the time and location the next morning (luckily I put an early alarm). First did the island tour which I thought was very touristy but still enjoyed. After I got my scooter (which wasn’t the best). I loved driving around the national park and having the freedom to explore at my own pace and avoid the crowds of the tours. However I did get stranded beside the road on my way back as the scooter stopped working. They did sent someone with a replacement so I could go back and catch my bus. They even got me a taxi to the bus station for a very good price! Read more Written March 29, 2024

I Travel Peru

All you need to know for your trip to Peru

What to Do in Paracas, Peru: a Complete Guide

As a Peruvian myself, I love exploring my own country when I’m not trotting around the globe. Paracas, a small town in the coast of Peru has become one of my go-to destinations.

Planning your trip to Paracas? Check out some of the best tours and lodging options in Paracas. Make sure to plan ahead so you don’t miss out on anything! Top experiences and tours in Paracas : 1. Ballestas Islands boat tour 2. Paracas National Reserve tour 3. ATV tour to the Paracas National Reserve 4. Paragliding over the Paracas reserve 5. Dune buggy at Huacachina desert and pisco tasting private tour 6. Paracas and Huacachina in 2 days from Lima (if you don’t have enough time! Best Hotels in Paracas: 1. Hotel Paracas, a Luxury Collection Resort (High-end. I’ve stayed here, my favorite hotel in Peru!) 2. Paracas Guest House (Mid-range) 3. Hotel Gran Palma Paracas (Mid-range) 4. Viajero-Kokopelli Hostel Paracas (Budget. I’ve stayed here, great place)

What to do in Paracas, Peru?

Here I share my personal recommendations for the best things to do in Paracas, Peru and the top places to stay for an unforgettable experience.

1. The Ballestas Islands

Ballestas islands, visiting them is one of the best things to do in Paracas

The Ballestas Islands are one of the top attractions in Paracas, Peru, and it’s not hard to see why. This group of islands is a true natural wonder, teeming with diverse marine life and surrounded by breathtaking landscapes.

To reach the Ballestas Islands, visitors can take a boat tour from the port of Paracas. The tour lasts approximately two hours and takes visitors on a journey along the coast, passing by rugged cliffs and rock formations along the way.

Once visitors reach the Ballestas Islands, they will be greeted by an incredible array of marine wildlife. It’s important to note that visitors do not get off the boat at any point during the tour, as the islands are a protected area. Visitors get to observe the wildlife from the comfort of the boat.

Sea lions at the Ballestas Islands, one of the best things to do in Paracas, Peru

Sea lions are some of the most popular animals on the islands, and visitors can observe them basking in the sun or playing in the water. Penguins are also present, and their comical antics are sure to put a smile on any visitor’s face. Dolphins and various species of birds are also commonly spotted on the islands.

Inca terns at Ballestas Islands

If you are into birdwatching like I am, you will be excited that you can see many interesting species at the islands. Among them, you can see the Peruvian Booby, the Red-Legged Cormorant, the Inca Tern and the Humboldt Penguin.

During the tour, knowledgeable guides will provide information about the wildlife and the history of the islands.

You can book a boat tour to Ballestas Islands here .

Tip: If you get easily seasick, I recommend you to take a pill for motions sickness half hour before getting on the speedboat. A popular pill that you can find at any Peruvian pharmacy is Gravol. I usually get seasick but I have had no problems going to the islands the times when I have taken that pill.

2. Appreciate El Candelabro

El Candelabro

Another must-see attraction in Paracas is El Candelabro, a massive geoglyph etched into the side of a cliff facing the sea. This mysterious symbol resembles a candlestick, and it’s estimated to be around 2,000 years old.

El Candelabro, deeply carved into the sand, is an impressive sight, as it measures 181 meters long (595 feet) and is 50 meters wide (164 feet)!

The origin and purpose of El Candelabro remain a mystery. It’s believed to have been created by the ancient people that inhabited the area. Some experts believe that the geoglyph served as a navigational aid for sailors , while others speculate that it had a more spiritual or religious significance .

Regardless of its original purpose, El Candelabro is a fascinating and impressive sight that shouldn’t be missed. Visitors can appreciate the geoglyph from the boat tour to the Ballestas Islands, as the tour passes by the cliff where it’s located.

3. The Paracas National Reserve

Paracas National Reserve, Peru

A visit to the reserve, alongside with the visit to the Ballestas islands, is the best thing to do in Paracas. The Paracas National Reserve is a protected area that encompasses a vast expanse of desert, sea, and islands.

Within the reserve, visitors can explore the stunning sand dunes, pristine beaches, and rugged cliffs that line the coast. The reserve is home to a diverse array of wildlife. This includes sea lions, penguins, dolphins, and a several bird species.

Beach at the Paracas National Reserve, Peru

One of the highlights of the Paracas National Reserve is the Mirador de Flamencos. This is a lookout point that offers breathtaking views of flamingos. Actually, did you know that Peru’s has the colors it has because the Liberator of Peru (from the Spanish) disembarked in that area and saw throusands flamingos flying around while he dreamt of freedom?

How to visit the Paracas National Reserve?

There are several tour options available for visitors to explore the reserve, including hiking, biking, and off-road vehicle tours. Some tours offer the chance to see ancient archaeological sites, including the remains of the Paracas culture.

Unless you have a car and you stop somewhere to hike, you can’t just go hiking in the national reserve unless you take a tour. You would be walking around the desert under the scorching sun with nothing in sight for a long time.

That being said, there are great tours that will take you hiking to the best spots. This is one of the best ways to experience the reserve. You can book a hiking tour here .

A Tour by Car:

This is probably the best way to visit the reserve. The tour takes you to around the best beaches, like the Red Beah, and viewpoints.

I’m generally not someone who likes tours so much, since I prefer visiting places by myself. Still, taking a tour, which was well-paced and had enough time at the different sites, was the best way to get to know the reserve. You can book a tour to the Paracas reserve here .

This is a fun and exciting way to visit the reserve. You will visit the Red Beach and Yumaque Beach, among other sites. You can book an ATV tour here .

Some people choose to visit the reserve by bike. Some hostels, like Kokopelli, can rent you a bike if this is your choice of visiting.

I personally wouldn’t recommend this option unless you are very experienced in biking and you don’t mind biking in the desert for a long time. I have seen people biking and they looked quite tired. While it’s different for everyone, I was happy I was not on a bicycle!

4. Paragliding over the Paracas National Reserve

Paragliding

Paragliding over the Paracas National Reserve is for sure one of the most exciting things to do in Paracas! As you take off from the launch site, you feel the rush of wind against your face as you appreciate the beauty of the park below you. But you’re also in the hands of an expert pilot who knows these skies like the back of their hand.

As you soar above the reserve, you’re treated to an incredible view of the rugged cliffs, the vast desert expanse, and the crystal-clear waters of the Pacific Ocean. The colors are more vibrant and the textures more alive than they are from the ground. You can see every detail, every curve, and every hidden cove.

Paragliding over the Paracas National Reserve is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that I would recommend to anyone who loves adventure and nature. It’s a chance to connect with the natural world in a way that’s impossible from the ground. You can check out a paragliding tour here .

5. El Raspon Beach

El Raspon Beach in Paracas, Peru

You shouldn’t miss this spot if you have enough time in Paracas. El Raspon Beach is one of the most picturesque spots in the area, and it’s only a 20-minute drive from Paracas town.

The beach is inside the Paracas National Reserve , so you’ll need to pay 11 soles to enter. To reach the beach, you can hire a taxi for about 70 soles round way, and you can negotiate for him to wait you there for 3-5 hours.

It’s important to note that the best time to visit is early in the day, around 8am, as the beach starts to get crowded from 11am onwards. The water is very cold, but if it’s sunny, you’ll appreciate the refreshing dip. The waves are gentle, so it’s not the best spot for surfing, but it’s perfect for sunbathing and relaxing.

One of the highlights of visiting this beach is exploring the cliffs that frame the beach. The jagged rock formations are not only visually stunning, but also provide a natural shelter from the sun and wind.

All in all, El Raspon is a must-visit spot for anyone who loves secluded beaches, dramatic landscapes, and a sense of adventure. A visit to El Raspon is one of the best things to do in Paracas.

If you want to visit another beach, you can also go to La Mina , which is just 5 minutes away. La Mina is also a beautiful beach, but it gets much more crowded.

6. The Paracas History Museum

Paracas skulls

Note: As of June 2023 the museum is temporarily closed. Check before going.

The Paracas History Museum in the town of Paracas is a very small but fascinating place to explore if you’re interested in the area’s rich cultural and historical heritage. One of the museum’s most intriguing exhibits is its collection of elongated skulls .

These skulls date back to around 300 BC and are notable for their elongated, pointed craniums. They have sparked much speculation and debate about the Paracas people and their way of life. Some theories suggest that the skulls are evidence of an ancient practice of head-binding . Others propose that they may be indicative of extraterrestrial contact or genetic abnormalities.

Regardless of their origins, the skulls are certainly an impressive and mysterious sight to behold. The museum has several on display, and the person in charge can give you detailed information about their discovery and significance.

In addition to the skulls, the museum features exhibits of pottery, metalwork, textiles, and other artifacts that provide a window into the daily life and customs of the Paracas people. The knowledgeable staff are happy to answer any questions you may have and to provide context for the exhibits.

Recommended Day Trip from Paracas

Explore ica and huacachina.

Huacachina oasis, a trip there is one of the best things to do from Paracas

If you have a day to spare in Paracas, a trip to nearby Ica and Huacachina is a great thing to do and a way to experience more of the region’s unique culture and landscape. The best wait to visit is to take a tour of the highlights of both Ica and Huacachina .

The tour typically begins with a visit to a local vineyard, where you can learn about the production of pisco , Peru’s national liquor. You’ll get to see the distillation process and sample some of the different varieties.

After the vineyard, the tour will take you to the city of Ica , the capital of the region . You can take a stroll through the main plaza and see some of the historic buildings, or do some shopping for souvenirs.

Dune buggy ride in Huacachina

Finally, the tour will bring you to the Huacachina oasis , a natural desert lagoon surrounded by towering sand dunes. Here, you will take an exciting buggy ride up and down the dunes (it actually feels like a rollercoaster). You’ll be able to take in the incredible views of the desert landscape and snap some unforgettable photos.

This day trip is a great way to see more of the area and get a taste of the unique attractions that make it such a special place.

The best hotels in Paracas, Peru

Here are some of the best hotels of Paracas, Peru. I have stayed at both the Hotel Paracas, a Luxury Collection Resort, and at Viajero-Kokopelli, so they are first hand recommendations .

High-end: Hotel Paracas, a Luxury Collection Resort

I loved my stay here. Stunning beachfront hotel located in the heart of Paracas. With spacious rooms, world-class amenities, including two heated pools and a luxury spa. Amazing breakfast buffet. You can book the tour to the islands directly from the hotel. The boat, with much less people than the usual boat, departs from the hotel itself. It’s the perfect place to relax and unwind. It’s probably one of the best hotels in Peru.

Mid-range: Paracas Guest House

Spacious rooms, a small pool, and a patio and terrace where guests can enjoy breakfast. The guesthouse is located just a 7-minute walk from the city center, making it a convenient and comfortable choice for travelers.

Mid-range: Hotel Gran Palma Paracas

It offers comfortable rooms with air conditioning, a swimming pool, restaurant, and a bar. It is located just a short walk from the beach and close to the main attractions in Paracas.

Budget: Viajero-Kokopelli Hostel Paracas

This is a popular choice for budget travelers, offering both private and dormitory-style accommodations. It has a fun and social atmosphere, with an outdoor pool and a bar. The hostel also organizes tours and activities for guests to enjoy.

Where to eat in Paracas, Peru

  • Vegano Peruano: Offers traditional Peruvian food, such as cebiche, tacu tacu, and causa, in their vegan versions.
  • Valhalla Restobar: A highly-rated, family-run restaurant that serves traditional Peruvian cuisine.
  • Pizzeria Venezia: A good pizza restaurant run by an Italian chef.

How to get to Paracas from Lima

The most common way of getting to Paracas is to take a bus from Lima. There are several bus companies that offer regular service to Paracas, with tickets costing around 50-75 soles (approximately $14-20 USD).

The journey takes about 3-4 hours depending on traffic, and buses usually depart from the Cruz del Sur or Soyuz (Peru Bus) bus stations in Lima.

Cruz del Sur is a better option. Make sure to get a direct ticket to avoid stopping at every little town along the way to pick up passengers.

Be sure to book your tickets in advance , especially during peak travel seasons, as buses can fill up quickly.

If you prefer to drive, you can rent a car in Lima and take the Pan-American Highway south towards Pisco. From there, it’s just a short drive to Paracas. The journey takes around 3-4 hours. The advantage of going by car is that you could visit the Paracas National Reserve by yourself. You can rent a car here.

Tours from Lima to Paracas:

Full-day tours:.

One popular option for people that don’t have enough time for their visit, is to take a full-day tour from Lima. This tour will take you to Paracas, where you will visit the Ballestas Islands. Afterwards, you willr ide a dune buggy and go sandboarding in the desert oasis of Huacachina. Keep in mind that the drive from Lima to Paracas can take anywhere from 3-4 hours depending on traffic, so the tours start around 5am.

I recommend booking the tour with this company . I have traveled with them, it’s a very well-known company and their buses are very comfortable.

Two-day tours:

If you have one more day, I really recommend that you go for the two-day tour instead for the one day tour. This way you can visit the area in a less rushed way and not spend 8 hours in the bus in one day.

My recommendation would be to book with this very reputable company . I did once the tour with them and it was great. It was by far more comfortable than traveling in a regular bus.

On day 1 you will go to Paracas and have the day to explore the area.

On day 2, you will go to Ballestas Islands, the Paracas National Reserve, and go further to the Huacachina oasis. There, you sill dune Buggy up and Sandboard down the biggest sand dunes at the only desert oasis in South America. They will drop you off at your hotel late at night in Lima.

The Weather in Paracas

Paracas enjoys a mild and dry desert climate throughout the year. It is an ideal destination for travelers looking to escape the cold weather.

The temperature in Paracas ranges from 60-80°F (15-27°C), with the warmest months being December to March.

The coldest months are from June to September, where temperatures can drop to around 60°F (15°C) at night.

The region is known for its sunny and clear skies, with little to no rainfall throughout the year. It is advisable to bring sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat to protect yourself from the strong UV rays.

As you can see, the town of Paracas, Peru, is a great destination that offers many things to do, including a range of outdoor activities around stunning natural scenery. From exploring the Ballestas Islands to enjoying the peaceful beach inside the reserve and admiring the (supposedly) alien skulls, there’s something for everyone.

And if you’re looking to venture out, the best destination is Huacachina. Either by taking a day trip to Ica and Huacachina as a tour, or to continue to Huacachina as your next destination, which is is 1 hour and 15 minutes away. Don’t forget to check out my guide on Huacachina to make the most of your visit to this beautiful region of Peru.

Moscow Metro

Introduction of moscow subway system (metro).

Richly Decorated Central Hall of Novokuznetskaya Station

Nowadays the Moscow Metro has 12 lines, light subway and monorail. All stations are unique and beautiful in their own way. Unfortunately, in order to visit them all, you need to spend many days. I invite guests to visit the ones that have the greatest cultural and historical interest from my point of view. Among them are the Revolution Square, Arbatskaya, Kievskaya (Arbatsko-Pokrovskaya Line № 3); Kievskaya, Belarusskaya, Novoslobodskaya, Komsomolskaya (the Ring line number 5). Let us dwell a bit on each.

Arbatsko-Pokrovskaya Line

Subway station "revolution square".

Sign “Ploshchad Revolyutsii” in Archway with Bronze Figures

Most recently - in the year 2008-2010 – the Eastern lobby was renovated. Because of the terrorist attacks in the Moscow subway that took place several hours before the planned opening of the East lobby after renovation, the solemn part of the event was canceled.

Subway station Arbatskaya

Subway Arbatskaya is located on the same subway line as the station "Revolution Square." It was founded in 1953. It received the name in honor of the Arbat Street. It has one ground lobby (Western). Initially, the lobby was in a separate building, but the new building of the General Staff of the Ministry of Defense started, the lobby appeared to be in its atrium. The old exits were bricked up; a new entrance was built into the building of General Staff of the street Vozdvizhenka. There is a huge frame with a missing portrait in the ground lobby - until mid-1950 there was a portrait of Stalin. According to some reports, it survived, but closed with plaster.

The lobby was restored and partially reconstructed in 2007-2008.

The depth of the station is 41 meters.

Pylons are finished with red marble at the bottom, decorated with bouquets of flowers made from ceramics. The floor is laid out with gray granite. The walls lined with glazed ceramic tiles, white top and black bottom. The station hall is illuminated by massive bronze chandeliers in the form of rings.

Subway station Kievskaya

There are several subway stations "Kievskaya" in Moscow, located on different branches. This name is quite popular. It comes from the capital of Ukraine - one of Russia's nearest neighbors - the city of Kiev. The name is fully consistent with the idea of the subway station. The interior the station devoted to Soviet Ukraine and the reunification of Ukraine and Russia. The station is decorated with a large number of paintings .Twenty four murals depicting workers of Soviet Ukraine are placed on the arch above the pylons. The wall from the side of platform also contains frescos, mainly with images of fantastic plants. Pylons are decorated with light marble and additionally decorated with colorful ceramic cornice. The butt of the station has a large mosaic, depicting festivities to celebrate the 300 anniversary of the reunification of Ukraine and Russia.

Opened in 1953, this subway station for a long time was the final (1953-2003).

The station has one lobby, combined with the station ring line and located in the building of the Kievskaya railway station. The diameter of the central hall station is 9.5 m, the diameter of side one is 8.5 m. The depth of the station is 38 meters.

= Ring Line Subway =

It opened in 1954. The station received its name after the Kiev station, and locked the Ring line. During the construction of the station many projects were proposed, but the victory in the competition won the Kiev architects who made the construction of the station. It is the only station of the Ring Line which is not located in the Central Administrative District of Moscow.

The station has a pylon structure. Eighteen pylons are decorated with mosaic panels of glazes, decorated on the theme of Ukrainian history and friendship between the Ukrainian and Russian peoples, which started in the mid-17 century.

On the front wall of the central hall of the station a large panel with molding in the form of flags and a mosaic portrait of Lenin in the center are located. There are lines of the Soviet national anthem around the portrait, and under the portrait - the words of Lenin. One of the ways out of the station was designed by French architects modeled on the Paris Subway in 2006.

At one of the mosaics – “The Struggle for Soviet power in Ukraine "- modern passengers observe a mobile phone and PDA in the hand of one of the guerrillas, and on his knees - a laptop. In fact, he uses a field telephone, which was really a heavy thing (guerrillas holds it in two hands), and thing that people see a laptop is the lid of a box with a telephone. However, these phones have begun to produce only in the second half of the 20-ies of XX century. We must assume that the mosaic depicts a foreign field telephone transmitter.

Subway station Belorusskaya

The founded of the station was in 1952. It received the name after the Belarusian railway station nearby. The station has two ground-based lobbies. The Western one goes to Tverskaya  Zastava. It is decorated with beautiful carvings. The Eastern one leads to Butyrskiy shaft and Forest Street. The Eastern lobby is known for its majolica panels.

The station Belorusskaya is located at a depth of 42.5 m below ground. The diameter of the central hall is 9.5 meters.

Pylons are faced with light marble. The walls lined with white ceramic tiles, the floor is covered with ceramic tiles, gray, white and red colors. Lamps placed on pylons, in the form of vases made of glass and marble. The theme of decoration is economy and culture of Belarus. Decorative pattern on the floor repeats the theme of traditional Belarusian embroidery. Decorations of the ceiling consist of stucco decorations and 12 mosaic panels depicting the life of the Belarusian people.

Subway station Novoslobodskaya

Built in 1952, Subway station Novoslobodskaya got its name from the eponymous street:  the station is located at the very beginning of it.

Novoslobodskaya is pylon station of deep foundation (its depth is 40 m) with three arches.

Exit to the street is through the ground lobby with column portico, located on Novoslobodskaya Street lined with gray marble. Pylons of the underground station are faced with marble from the Urals. Thirty two spectacularly illuminated stained-glasses, placed inside the pylon and bordered by steel and gilt brass are splendid decoration of the station. A remarkable mosaic "World Peace" is located at the end of the central hall. The picture depicts a happy mother with a baby in her arms; it was the face of Stalin at the picture: the child gave a hand to him. But in times of Khrushchev the face of the former leader of USSR was removed from the panel. The walls are lined with bright marble; floor is covered with white and black granite slabs, placed in a checkerboard pattern.

Subway station Komsomolskaya

The station was built in 1952 and named in honor of the Komsomolskaya Square, which is situated nearby.

This subway station is the station of the deep bedding. Its depth is 37 meters. The station has column and three- arched design. Cast iron decoration is used in the construction, monolithic slab used as a tray for a collapsible finishing. The length of the boarding hall is 190 meters; width of it is 10 meters. There are 68 octagonal columns at station.

The main theme of the interior of the station is the fighting of the Russian people for their independence. The ceiling is decorated with eight station mosaic mural made from glazes and precious stones. Six of them represent the Alexander Nevsky, Dmitry Donskoy, Kuzma Minin and Dmitry Pozharsky, Alexander Suvorov and Mikhail Kutuzov, the Soviet soldiers and officers at the walls of the Reichstag.

Two other panels, depicting Stalin ("Victory Parade" and "Presentation of the Guards Banner"), were replaced after the dethronement of Stalin's personality cult in 1963. New panels depict Lenin's speech in front of the Red Guards and the Motherland on the background of the Kremlin's Spasskaya Tower.

The yellow ceiling is decorated with mosaic and moldings. The hall is illuminated by massive chandeliers hanging between the panels; platforms are illuminated with smaller chandeliers. The columns are decorated with marble capitals and trimmed with light marble, as well as the wall station. The floor is laid with pink granite. There is a bust of Lenin at the end of the hall. At the opposite end of the escalator is a large Florentine mosaic of the Order of Victory with red banners on the background. The ground lobby of the station is decorated with bas-reliefs.

In conclusion...

Each of the stations of the Moscow subway is attractive and interesting in its own way. Each has its own long and fascinating history and is beautifully decorated. The Moscow subway is a whole world, which can be talking about for hours. I suggest you short - no more than one hour and a half - and a fascinating journey through the world of the Moscow subway. The pleasure is guaranteed!

Go beneath the streets on this tour of the spectacular, mind-bending Moscow Metro! Be awed by architecture and spot the Propaganda , then hear soviet stories from a local in the know. Finish it all up above ground, looking up to Stalins skyscrapers, and get the inside scoop on whats gone on behind those walls.

Know More about this tour

We begin our Moscow tour beneath the city, exploring the underground palace of the Moscow Metro. From the Square of Revolution station, famous for its huge statues of soviet people (an armed soldier, a farmer with a rooster, a warrior, and more), we’ll move onto some of the most significant stations, where impressive mosaics, columns, and chandeliers will boggle your eyes! Moreover, these stations reveal a big part of soviet reality — the walls depict plenty of Propaganda , with party leaders looking down from images on the walls. Your local guide will share personal stories of his/her family from USSR times, giving you insight into Russia’s complicated past and present. Then we’re coming back up to street level, where we’ll take a break and refuel with some Russian fast food: traditional pancakes, called bliny. And then, stomachs satiated, we are ready to move forward! We’ll take the eco-friendly electric trolleybus, with a route along the Moscow Garden Ring. Used mainly by Russian babushkas(grannies) during the day, the trolleybus hits peak hours in the mornings and evenings, when many locals use it going to and from their days. Our first stop will be the Aviator’s House, one of Stalin’s Seven Sisters, followed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs — and you’ll hear the legends of what has gone on inside the walls. Throughout your Moscow tour, you’ll learn curious facts from soviet history while seeing how Russia exists now, 25 years after the USSR.
