Perhaps the most popular trek in Sikkim, the Dzongri-Goechala Trek is also called the Khangchendzonga Trek. Expect great mountain views, birding opportunities, and dense forests. The trek begins from Yuksom and takes you through Tshoka, Dzongri, Kokchorung, Thansing, and Lhamune. Major attractions that you’ll come across during the seven to eight day-long trek include Samiti Lake and Goechala. The trek offers incredible views of Mt. Khangchendzonga, Mt. Goacha, and Mt. Pandim. The best time is from April to December, with May and October being peak seasons.

Monastic Trek

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Ritwik Bhunia (@how_i_wander)

This trek is special. It takes you through the several age-old monasteries that dot Sikkim’s landscape. The trek starts from Pelling and takes you through Pemayangtse, Sangaloching, and Rabdentse on the first day. Further up, you have the stunning Khecheopari Lake, Yuksom, and Norbughang Coronation Throne. The last stretch of the trek includes Dubdi Monastery and Tashiding Monastery. The trek ends at either Jorethang or Gyanzing, depending on the route.

Rhododendron Trek

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐚 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐋𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐎𝐟 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐯𝐞𝐧 (@india_landofheaven)

Sikkim is blessed with an impressive variety of Rhododendrons. The Rhododendron Trek is mostly done during the months from April to June as the flowers are in full bloom during this period. The first major stop on this trek is the Barsai Rhododendron Sanctuary. You can set base in either Okhre or Hilley and explore Barsai. Other important points in the trek are Jorbutri, Kalizar, and Chewabhanjan. The trek culminates at Uttaray, from where you can proceed to Gangtok.

Mostly taken by the natives of Sikkim, the Khedi Trek is moderately easy. Largely untouched by tourists, the trek compels you to put up your camps owing to the lack of homestays and trekking huts. Most experts advise doing this trek with the help of a tour operator. The starting point of the trek is Assam Lingzey village, from where you trek to Chaurikharkha. This trek also takes you to pristine lakes such as Ramitey, Dunga, Bhaley Pokhari, and Pothi Pokhari. Another prominent point during the six-day trek is the Sela Pass, which offers rewarding views of Tsomgo and Kupup lakes. The last stretch includes Talkharka before you return to your base at Assam Lingzey.

Singalila Trek

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Sreejana Gurung (@sreejanagurung)

One of the most challenging treks in Sikkim, the Singalila Trek begins from Uttarey. Overnight stops during this long 10-11 days trek are Chewabhanjan, Dhur, Meghu, Dafeybhir, Tikipchu, Dzongri, Thangsing, and Tshoka. The best part about this trek is the hike from Lhamuni to Samiti Lake and further up to the Goechala Pass. It’s best that you embark on this trek through a travel agency since it’s an expert-grade trek.

Phoktey Dara Trek

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Akash Roy (@akash__roy)

Possibly the most picturesque trek in Sikkim, this easy trek treats you with unparalleled views of Mt. Khangchendzonga and even the magnificent Mt. Everest. Both the mountains can be seen from Phoktey Dara and Singalila Ridge. The trek only takes three days. On the first day, you trek to Thulodhab from Uttaray. The next day requires you to trek from Thulodabh to Kalizar. You can also visit Phoktey Dara on this day. The third and last day of the trek takes you to Singalila Ridge. The last bit of the trek is from Chewabhanjan to Uttaray.

Tendong Trek

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by SIKKIM | TRUST THE LOCALS (@sikkimadventures)

Being a day trek, the Tendong Trek is quite popular among trekking lovers. It’s an easy trek and one needs to register with the Forest Department to take this trek. You’ll also be required to present your id proof at the Police Checkpost in Ravangla. The trek begins from Chemchey and takes you to Tendong Hill via Damthang. There’s another route you may take. This one takes you from Ravangla to Bhaledunga via Mainam before ending at Yangyang. The Tendong hilltop is a heritage site and holds immense significance for the Lepcha community. In August, the Tendong Lho-rumfaat festival is celebrated on the hilltop.

It’s a 4-hour climb from the Ravangla forests up to the Maenam Hills. From the hilltop, one can witness the Khangchendzonga range sometimes.

4. Gurudongmar Lake

khedi trek sikkim

Gurudongmar Lake is situated at the height of 5243 meters in North Sikkim. This lake is known to be the second-highest lake in India. However, it is freezing at such a height. Moreover, your ears may get blocked.

The Gurudongmar Lake is believed to be named after the very first Sikh Guru, Baba Guru Nanak Ji.

People also believe that he broke the ice top with the tip of his stick and forecasted that the top will never freeze again and thus it would never cease to be a water body. Due to this faith which is firmly held and followed by the Sikhs, a Gurudwara was made near this lake in the late 20th Century.

Sikkim is bound to unfold a mixed bag of scenic beauty, lakes, mesmerizing forests, and beautiful hilltops. Trekkers are amazed to see the sights here.

5. Chitrey Trek

Chitrey is a small mountain village with a low density of population. Below Chitrey, there lies another town called Maneybhanjang. This town is located at the India/ Nepal Border. A local homestay with properly sanitated and furnished rooms is available here.

It covers the Khangchendzonga biosphere reserve ; it displays the best flora and allows us to view different kinds of birds.

The base of the Khangchendzonga Trek is itself deemed to be the most beautiful camp. It takes an individual to some of the overwhelming tracks of the Himalayas.

If a person is new to trekking, then they should not take up this trek as it requires a lot of courage and hard work to climb this trek. It can be challenging for newbies.

One might have to climb some very steep sides of the Himalayas, which is extremely tough. However, the trek has a lot to offer, including Mt. Khangchendzonga.

The best time to climb this trek is in the months of March-May. But, if you like to witness and play with snow, then September- November it is.

RIVER RAFTING

One of the most desired adventure sport is river rafting. River rafting on the Teesta may be the most heart-pounding experience imaginable, offering everything from calm glides through breathtaking mountain scenery to roaring rapids that only the most expert rafter can negotiate. A wonderful approach to experience nature and adventure is to meander along the untamed mountain river. Deep forests, little communities, and areas of terraced agriculture may be found along the riverbanks. There are several white sand beaches that provide suitable camping areas. Rafting is a fun activity because calm floats are alternated with rapids of classifications 2 to 4.

You can see the natural beauty of the area while floating along the river. For help planning river rafting adventures, both novice and seasoned explorers can turn to the Department of Tourism and travel agencies. Prices are often fair and will include meals, gear, life jackets, helmets, a knowledgeable guide, and lodging. In the height of rafting season, organized rafting parties are frequently seen at the majority of these nice riverside campgrounds.

MOUNTAINEERING

The world-famous Himalayas in Sikkim provide a wealth of opportunities for adventure activities including climbing. Mountaineering is one of the many adventure activities that is rapidly growing in popularity in Sikkim. Popular Sikkim peaks where mountaineering is permitted include Jopuno, Tinchenkhang, Frey’s Peak, Lamo Angden, and Byrmkhangse. With the assistance of specific licenses from the relevant government, one may attempt climbing in these summits. The best time to go mountaineering in Sikkim is from May through October.

Another well-liked and interesting adventure activity in Sikkim is yak riding. The ethereally gorgeous Tsomgo Lake is located at an elevation of 12,310 feet, 35 kilometers from Gangtok. Yaks are ready to take you on a trip around the lake or up the mountain. BIRD WATCHING

Sikkim is known as a birdwatcher’s paradise and is rich in avifauna. Its avian population includes about 550 different species. The climate fluctuates between the lowlands’ tropical heat and the snowy areas’ alpine cold. The vegetation is classified into four different altitudinal zones: tropical, subtropical, temperate, and alpine. In certain locations, the distance between the balmy valleys and never-ending snow is barely 10 km. The humidity, rainfall, climate, and vegetation have clearly differentiated altitudinal zones as a result of the terrain’s telescoping. Due to the wide variety and abundance of the local bird life, this region is arguably one of the richest areas of its size in the entire world.

West Sikkim has excellent chances for birdwatching. One of the greatest birding locations in Sikkim, Barsey, situated at 3300 meters on a large ridge covered with protected forests of Silver Fir, hemlocks, magnolias, and rhododendrons is a paradise.

Bird Watching in Sikkim

Apart from Bird watching

There are several fantastic hiking trails and birding locations in Pemayangste and the neighboring hamlet of Pelling. These woodlands are home to some significant species, including the Maroon-Backed Accentor and Red-faced Liocichla.

In addition to migrating ducks, the Khecheopheri Lake occasionally supports uncommon species like the Black-necked Crane, the Black-tailed Crane, and many more.

The 10-day Dzongri trip is the greatest option for individuals who are excited about trekking in the high Himalayas if they want to view higher altitude birds. Blood Pheasant, Himalayan Monal, Brown Parotbill, Fire-tailed Myzornis, Cutia, Sapphire flycatcher, White-browed Bush Robin, Grandala, Rufous-breasted Accentors, White-winged and collared Grosbeaks, Spot-winged Rosefinch, and Grandala are some of the birds sighted on this trip.

the Maenam Wildlife Sanctuary in South Sikkim. The sanctuary begins at a height of 2000 meters with a subtropical forest, which is progressively replaced by wet temperate forest between 2500 and 3000 meters, and sub-alpine conifer forests above 3000 meters. It takes 12 km to get from Rabongla to Maenam Top, and a further 1 km of hiking will bring you to Bhaledhunga, a cockscomb-shaped stone. The Satyr Tragopan, Kalij pheasant, Rusty-bellied Shortwing, Minivet, Yuhina, flycatchers, etc. are significant bird species in this trek.

Parks and Sanctuaries

Kanchendzonga national park.

The Khangchendzonga National Park is Sikkim’s largest wildlife reserve, covering an area of 1784 square kilometers. The park’s western border, straddled by the Khangchendzonga, the third-highest mountain in the world, from which the reserve derives its name. The enormous Zemu Glacier is also part of the reserve. The National Park is one of the country’s top high-altitude national parks and is home to one of the planet’s most stunning eco-systems.

Due to its location in such an inhospitable area in the North and South districts, the area has mostly remained undeveloped. The red panda, snow leopard, Himalayan black bear, Tibetan antelope, wild ass, barking deer, musk deer, flying squirrel, and rhododendron dwell in peace and seclusion in the reserve along with other animals.

Fambong Lho Wildlife Sanctuary

The Fambong Lho Wildlife Sanctuary is located 20 kilometers from Gangtok and spans a 52 sq. km area. In addition to a variety of birds and butterflies, the sanctuary is home to a number of leopards, red pandas, civet cats, and Himalayan black bears. In addition, the sanctuary is the home to several rhododendrons and wild orchids. At Golitar and Tumin, there is a log home with two rooms. For both domestic and international tourists, the Forest Department requires permission.

Singba Rhododendron Sanctuary

The Singba Rhododendron Sanctuary, 43 square kilometers in size and through which the Yumthang River runs, resides close to Lachung in the North region. Rhododendron bushes and trees grow in great profusion throughout the Sanctuary. Only in this sanctuary does the state tree, the Rhododendron Niveum, grow. This area is also rich in ground flora, including primulas, potentillas, gentians, poppies, and aconites. When the rhododendrons are in full bloom and the sanctuary is a riot of hues, April through July is the greatest time to come. The last frontier community before arriving at the sanctuary is Lachung. Both in Yumthang and here, there is a Forest Rest House.

Kyongnosla Alpine Sanctuary

The Kyongnosala Alpine Sanctuary, situated 31 kilometers east of Gangtok on the route to Nathu La, is rich in both flora and wildlife and spans an area of 31 square kilometers. A magnificent diversity of rhododendrons, primroses, poppies, and other wild flowers found in the sanctuary creates aromatic ecosystem. Here, the endangered ground slipper orchid Cypripedium Tibeticum and the state tree of Sikkim, Rhododendron Nevium, have both been introduced. The reserve is home to several species of pheasants as well as the critically endangered musk deer, red panda, Himalayan black bear, and serow [long haired goat].

Maenam Wildlife Sanctuary

Overlooking the South Sikkim village of Ravangla, the 35 sq. km. large Maenam Wildlife Sanctuary. The sanctuary known as “Maenam-la,” which means “Treasure-house of Medicines,” houses a variety of medicinal plants. The red panda, leopard, black eagle, and civet cat are among the animals and birds found in the temperate forest, in addition to other creatures. The reserve’s boundaries also include the 3,263-meter-tall Maenam Peak.

Varsey Rhododendron Sanctuary

The Varsey Rhododendron Sanctuary situated in West Sikkim, close to Hilley is a treat in flowering season. This little 104-square-kilometer sanctuary, which is located between the Khangchendzonga Biosphere Reserve and Singalila National Park in the south and north, supports a diverse range of biodiversity. At an altitude of 2200–4100 meters, the sanctuary’s greatest draws are its rhododendrons, which bloom from April through May. Before Varsey, Hilley is the final motorable location. You may reach the Sanctuary by walking four kilometers through lovely pine trees. The Guras Kunj trekker’s cabin is where you may stay.

Rhododendron Trek in Sikkim

Posted on sat, 15 feb 2014 13:00:05 by arun joshi, travel trove… the rhododendron trek in sikkim.

Rhododendron flowers Trek

Sikkim has been one of the popular picks for leisure holidays like weekend getaways, honeymoon tours and cultural tours. Moreover, this part of the Indian Himalayan region also hosts several high altitude lakes and mountain passes and is also popular for housing an indigenous culture. With the improvement of eco-tourism in Sikkim, the trailing tracks lead to several trekking destinations in Sikkim that creates a close bond between nature and travellers. The gneissose and half-schistose rocky trails passes through a rich bed of evergreen and deciduous forest that encounters you with over 7000 species of plants, including the state tree, rhododendron, which has 36 different species. The popular Rhododendron Trek in Sikkim thus acquaints you with the vast eco-sphere… where you can further sight some rare species of birds and animals like musk deer, red panda, different types of cats, wolf and more.

Walk through the bed of leathery leaves

The Rhododendron Trek in Sikkim takes you through the traditional culture of the Sikkimese, en route the Kagyud Monastery and Sherpa village. While embracing the sweet melodies of nature… of the humming of bees and chirping of birds, the trail heads up to Danra Barkhey via Phoktey Danra from Kalijhar. From Danra Barkhey one can enjoy the binocular view of the Mt. Everest, Mt. Makalu, Mt. Nuptse, Mt. Lutsey, Dhaulagire range and Mt. Kanchenjunga. Passing through the dense Rhododendron forest, the trail veers to Deoningali Dhap and then the tracks gently descends to Varsey, which is popular for exhibiting a vast bed of rhododendrons beneath the grace of Mt. Kanchenjunga. It is rich in Bio-diversity with different species of flora and fauna. The place is a home to Wild Boar, Blood Pheasant, and Deer etc. Nonetheless, the breathtaking ambiance also allows you to set up an overnight camp and experience the exotic mood under the starlit sky. The trail down, from Varsey, leads the tracks back to Uttarey. Well… this trek is also known as the Varsey Trek, which is a popular trek in Sikkim.

Further the adventure holidays in Sikkim unfolds the beer valley of Sikkim, Yuksom, which is the gateway to the Dzongri-Goecha La Trek . On this trek, one will bawl with surprises at each turn. It exhibits a vast natural vista of the farfetched snow capped ranges that secludes the colourful valley bedded with vast forest of rhododendron and other species of flowering plants. The rich undulated terrain is also a home to varied species of Himalayan birds. From the Dzongri summit one can capture a binocular sight of the Kabru, Ratong and Kanchenjunga peaks. Beyond the Dzongri summit, after crossing the Prek Chu River, the trail heads up to a lofty height of 3800 mts to Thangshing that nestles under the divine shadow of Mount Pandim. Passing through Onglathang and capturing the exotic ambiance of the lush green meadows the trek reaches the mesmerizing Samiti Lake from where starts the gradual climb crossing a dry lake at Zemathang to Goech La Pass, which is set at a mighty height of 4940 mts. Thereafter the journey trails back to Thangshing and heads toward the remote village of Lampokhari. Acquainting the cultural harmony confined within the lost terrain in Sikkim the trail then traces toward Kasturi en route Chamrey.

The landlocked state of Sikkim also offers numerous trekking destinations that allow beginners to participate in the adventure tours to Sikkim. Some of the low altitude treks in Sikkim are the Tengdong Trek, Jhandidara Trek, Mainam Trek and Khedi Trek.
